Gigabyte AORUS FO48U - 48" 4K 120hz 1ms FreeSync Premium OLED Gaming Monitor $1099 + Delivery ($0 SYD C&C) @ Mwave

1610

Pretty good price on a great monitor.

It uses the same panel as the LG OLEDs, you just miss out on some features and doesn't have the usual smartTV capabilities (Netflix, etc). I use one as a TV with a PS5 plugged in and it works great. Around $800 cheaper than the LG C1 48", so a good price if you're willing to forgo some features.

A highly-rated monitor, seems to be available at this price fairly regularly but sells out quickly.

Sound is through aux only, no optical and it's noticeably worse

      • what device have you got plugged into it? I would just use the optical cable into the PC instead.

        • An optical cable? Wow. I haven't used one of those since the PS3 days.

Everything's either HDMI or USB now.

      • The headphone jack is optical

        • Wow thanks for that, didn't even know it was a thing, will get a cable and test it out

          • @Cbuck: I just got an adapter from jaycar so I could connect to my 7.2 HT

Grabbed one of these a couple of months back. Been using it for for PS5 and PC gaming a bed and a bits length away. Really enjoying for the $1038.35 spent. At a slightly higher price point, I still consider this a bargain after my experience.

  • Anyone using a mount for these screens?

    • Keen to know as well

This vs DELL gaming monitor s2721dgf in terms of gaming? How does it fare against Dell?

    • +3

ummm, one is a massive 48" OLED display that will destroy the S2721DGF in terms of picture quality. I have owned both the S2721DGF and currently own a LG C1 48". Once you go OLED for your monitor every other monitor is dead to you, obiviously it depends what sort of gaming you are doing, if you are doing any remotely FPS gaming, I'd say a 27" like the 165Hz QHD S2721DGF is much more suitable, for anything else this will be a joy to use.

Also kind of a strange comparison, comparing a $1100 48" OLED 4K 120hz display to a usually $400 ish Dell S2721DGF QHD IPS 165hz display. If you buy it on sale/ the dell outlet store you can score 3 of the S2721DGF's for the price of this single monitor.

  • Had to return this one, as it's unusable if you are working with text (

    • Do you mean the text smoothing or just the auto screen dimming?

      • you need to play around with the cleartype settings a fair bit to get the text to look good.

      • +1

It's hard to explain to be honest, in some situations text looks blurry, in others - it's oversharpened. Depends on font/background colors I guess. Playing with clear-type or monitor settings doesn't help, unfortunately.

        • +1

I see. I turned cleartype off and downloaded mactype based on a suggestion from reddit, seems to work for me. Sharpness isn’t amazing but quite acceptable.

If you're worried about how big the monitor is, whether the stands are too wide etc check out my youtube video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iq2ULB21JZM

      thank you.
I got the measuring tape out last night, to check, but seeing it next to another monitor (especially the same as what I have) is way better.

    • Didn't know you on here as well? I did watch your videos when researching this 🤝

  • Thanks OP!

i have owned this monitor for nearly 5 months and while its truly an awesome monitor my enjoyment of it has been ruined by a power down screen bug which randomly pops up a dozen times a day, its a known bug that gigabyte refuse to acknowledge and has not been fixed despite several bios updates
the forums are full of reports of this annoying bug and people are starting to send their monitors back to gigabyte only to be told there is no issue
do your homework before purchasing this monitor, yes the monitor is crazy good, but it comes with a game breaking bug

    • I had that at the start but not getting it anymore. Have it on all day. Maybe it's kind of a run in feature.

    • +1

Is that the please turn power off message? I thought that was a bug due to the panel use time not counting properly and the 05 firmware fixed that. Did it start happening recently or was it always like this for you?

      • Happened for quite a while from the start but now haven't seen it for weeks. I mean all/any messages, can't remember specifics.

      • ive had the monitor for 5 months and ive had this problem for all but the first 2 weeks

      • yes that message

        • Ah ok that sucks, I've only had this for a few weeks so fingers crossed. My panel time doesn't seem to be counting correctly btw, not sure if that means I'll get it.

  • Looks like it has been ozbargained. OOS on the website

PCCG, PLE, JW all have them available for pre-order @ same price. PCCG getting stock in first by the looks of it.

    • +2

Stock arriving soon @ PLE I backordered 2nd one 6 weeks ago with delivery first weeks of June

      • +1

Confirmed - I called PLE today to check, stock was expected start of June but has been delayed. They should be coming in the next week or 2.
Asked if I could put an order in anyway. Order submitted via website for sale price _b. Excited - my first OLED and high refresh rate screen (apart from my Poco F3).

      • I got an e-mail from PLE saying stock delayed until the end of July now :(
Are you the same or have they secured yours earlier?

  • For those who are still interested and missed out, these are available for pre-order at PCCASEGEAR for the same price

  • People who have them - how big is the gap between bottom of monitor to desk? Can i slide my samsung soundbar underneath it?

Also a few people have complained about text clarity in windows? I won't be gaming full time - will be apps 70 percent/gaming 30

    Thanks

    • +1

Gap would only be 4-5cm, probably not big enough.
Text clarity is fine, search reddit for instructions on how to turn cleartype off and install mactype.

      • Don't do this with other monitors unless you are blind - Cleartype looks significantly better than Mac-style font rendering 🤷‍♂️

Does this particular screen have some sort of Cleartype incomptibility that you can't fix with the "Adjust Cleartype text" application in Windows ?

        • To clear up some misconceptions:

          • Mactype is an app that performs text smoothing, however nowhere does it claim to do Mac OS style font rendering, so I don’t get why people should not do,this with other monitors.
          • yes, clear type is incompatible/not designed to work with LG Oleds, this is explained on the reddit post. No amount of adjustment will fix this.
          • Mactype is also way more customisable than clear type wizard, so again, even for other monitors it seems to be worth using.
          • @cheng2008: Thanks for this explanation.

MacType does do OSX style font rendering, it and it's predecessors have been around a long time to replace Cleartype to make Windows Font Rendering look like Mac Font Rendering.

But on most monitors, the results are inferior - Cleartype is better once you've run through the tuning wizard - you get crisper and smoother text.

Sounds like a great workaround for this particular screen though. If Cleartype doesn't work well, then absolutely use something else.

    • the gap iis around 2 - 2.5 inches, but the main thing is this monitor comes with its own built in soundbar underneath,
sound is okish almost dedicated tv quality which is impressive for a monitor
also underneath is a joystick nipple, which protrudes 10-15 mm, there are no buttons, so you have to take that into account if placing a soundbar there

yer the txt thing you do see it happening but i just live with it,

  • want!

  • This seemed like a pretty great deal.

  • Stock at JW has been pushed back to next month (25/07).

Cancelled that and saw that PLE has stock with eta 23/06. Went ahead and placed an order, but it then updated to no eta.

Hopefully I got one of the last units available this month otherwise I’ll be waiting quite a while haha

    • Still waiting as of 13/07…
