Gigabyte AORUS FO48U - 48" 4K 120hz 1ms FreeSync Premium OLED Gaming Monitor $1099 + Delivery ($0 SYD C&C) @ Mwave

1610

Pretty good price on a great monitor.

It uses the same panel as the LG OLEDs, you just miss out on some features and doesn't have the usual smartTV capabilities (Netflix, etc). I use one as a TV with a PS5 plugged in and it works great. Around $800 cheaper than the LG C1 48", so a good price if you're willing to forgo some features.

A highly-rated monitor, seems to be available at this price fairly regularly but sells out quickly.

Purchased this recently as a PC monitor — It's absolutely outstanding. VRR also seems to work below 48hz with frame doubling natively on Nvidia. Ultra-wide gaming in particular 3840x1600 is amazing, I haven't played any games in its native 16:9 ratio it's too close/large for most desks.

    • +2

      Love mine too.

Half the price of C1/C2, still with sweet sweet LG OLED panel.

      Remote feels cheap (who cares)
USBC with hub is heaven for work laptop
Turning on can be confusing without input already streaming as the panel stays pitch black (hah)

Bought from JW for $1039 in May.

      • Man you guys are really tempting me, Being looking everywhere for legit HDR monitor, just want something really good for the visual enjoyment, but there really aren't many options and none of them really fit my criteria in terms of size and pricing. I really doubit I could use this monitor on my main desk, but possibly use it for general media consumption and occasional sim racing games.

Great monitor. I got one for $1048 from this deal in April-

48" is massive for most people's desk set ups. I've tried a 43" LG and it took me a long time to get used to it. My desk size is 1800mm (l) x 750mm (d)

    • +1

My 49" is fine on my 1400mm desk

      • +10

What's the depth of the desk? I think that'll be the ultimate issue for most.

Edit: Your 49" is the Super Ultrawide ratio which will be different to the 48" 16:9. The 16:9 ratio will have a much much taller height which will be super hard to use as a monitor

        • +2

600mm. Unusable with the original Samsung stand, protruded too far into desk space. But with an aftermarket hydraulic arm it sits well.

      • +1

        A 49" is essentially 2* 27" monitors side by side. A much smaller visual area than a 48" 16:9.

    • +1

My thoughts exactly, you could use this as a TV lol

      • All my downgrade 4k monitors become my bedroom 4k TV, last one being a 4K LG 27 inch IPS screen, slapped it with a 4K tuner like my 4K Fetch Mighty TV box and wal-la, ok my last LG 4K monitor didn't have built-in speakers but the was easily fixed with a portable Sony Base speaker and sounds actually perfect

Now trying to sell my above monitor so I can downgrade my current PC monitor to be my bedroom TV which is a 4K Phillips 32ich monitor,. want to go bigger on both fronts as my PC and bedroom TV, so hard to sell a second hand monitor these days, even giving it away lolz

Edit: I certainly don't have the room for a 48inh PC monitor on my smallish current desk but I'll bloody make it fit no matter what, I've managed a massive Samsung soundbar under my smallish desk so yeah lolz šŸ‘šŸ˜

120x70 cm desk here with this monitor and doing just fine! Have it mounted on a arm towards the back of desk.

I never have my applications full screen and use fancy zones to divide up my desktop. I game at a custom resolution of 3840x1600.

No problem with size! Only issue for me would be the auto dimming that seems to activate unless there is significant change of pixels on the screen. So you could type an email and after 1-2mins the screen starts to dim unless i move the window around a bit.

      • What about when watching movie or playing game? Will it start to dim?

        • nah not in game so many hourd on elden on this.. made me get a 6900xt for full 4k glory best purchase by for the monitor..

      • Which monitor arm are you using?

        • brateck LDT43-C011 with Brateck Lumi LCD-201R adapter plate. * may require some extra screws to work with the female vesa hole depth.

  • +4

32" is the max comfortable size for me for monitors, you will have to move neck up/down to see it all properly or sit further back.

    • +2

You can just run a custom UW resolution on this. Still cheaper than buying an OLED UW. Probably won't be good for color uniformity on the long run though

  • this is crazy spec for a monitor, would love to game on this thing

  • +8

Keep in mind the burn in issues with OLED. This is the reason why most computer monitors are not OLED. If you use it also as a desktop PC, your Windows taskbar and HUD displays for games you regularly play will be burnt into the monitor, reducing its re-sell value and also decreases its useful life if you can't put up with it.

    • +1

But there's plenty of smaller OLEDs making their way this year after selling so well in the bigger sizes and the fact that Gigabyte still give a 3 year manufacturers warranty seems like they're pretty confident burn in isn't an issue in 2022. My Mate 20 Pro has an OLED screen and no issues after 1.5 years of use..

      • +6

Phones screens are much less likely to suffer burn in than a PC. Phones are turned off much more often and showing a static image is uncommon. In particular the Windows taskbar is a real source of burn in for PCs

        • Funny my Note 9 I've just noticed is showing signs of burn-in but it's actually from the back ground pic so don't know why as that is the least screen that's on all the time, what 2018 phone so took 4 years to happen, second phone with burn-in my Note 8 happened within 1 year but I got it fixed under warranty, maybe just bad luck on both counts, I do admit the Note 9 I've slept on a few times and woke up with the phone cooking, the battery has buldged and has nicely popped the back off of the phone so now I can replace the battery easily, though the battery is still going fine maybe this caused the burn-in, I'm not sure, very careful not to do the same with my Note 10 and 20 lolz

      • Gigabyte's warrranty doesn't claim burn in as part of it. It's too early to tell, but they could pull what LG did initially and state that burn in is from 'misuse' or general wear and tear

    • +1

"This is the reason why most computer monitors are not OLED"

Have you not seen how many OLED monitors are being released in 2022? If you use some common sense burn in should not be a issue. If you want to display 100% static content at 100% brightness then you may have some issues but even then you will probably get thousands of hours with all the burn in mitigation tech built in before you hit problems.

      • Hopefully Gigabyteā€™s burn-in mitigation is as good as LGā€™s and Samsungā€™s

        • It's probably the exact same one built into the firmware

          • @MagnamoniousRex: given how different the gigabyte pixel refresher operates and the more aggressive ABL I wouldn't operate under that impression tbh.

      • There's not much mitigation software can do for the Windows task bar if you use it for more than just gaming.

    • +1

Burn in is absolutely not the reason why most monitors are not OLED. Most monitors are not OLED because they're too big and too expensive. Make them smaller and cheaper and they'll definitely be more popular.

    • +2

burn in is manageable as long as you don't do anything silly like run full brightness with a bright background. I've had my LG OLED55B6T since 2016, no issues with burn in here. I do get the occasional image retention but nothing too bad. That being said, i mostly stream shows and game, I don't watch a lot of regular TV where there would be logos that can burn in.

  • Would 48 inch be too small for 2.8m viewing distance? Was surprised to see rtings recommend 2.05m viewing distance for 48 inches. (Talking as a TV here). Currently use 50 inch and its the perfect size for me. I have zero imagination so hard to tell how much I'd notice the difference

    • +1

      Almost 3m.. I would go 55" as a minimum

    • +1

I'm viewing a 55" at 600-900mm been over five years of doing it, at home and at work.
      Can never have big enough.

      • +3

Same. I have a 60" but can always go bigger. For tv watching. For PC there's definitely a point where it can be too big and too close.

  • +2

Great experience on XSX and PS5, would recommend šŸ‘

  • +5

Now that the LG C2 come in 42" I might wait to get the 42" monitor. Even that might be too big for most desks to be honest.

    • Good to know!

    • +1

Been waiting for the 42ā€ for almost 1.5 years now.

LG is out but waiting for the Sony as the LG shows some issues on dimming on the edges.

    • doubt it'll be cheaper than this tho

      • Definitely not. But 42ā€ is more usable. 48ā€ is not going to work for me at all without getting neck pain and nausea.

        • -4

you do realise you can move it back 30cm and it'll look the same

          • +1

@abctoz: Well, I donā€™t have extra 30cm on my desk.

            • -6

@xenoic: ahh yes the short desk limitation a classic

              • +1

@abctoz: You may as well get a 77ā€ and stand 2 metres back. Classic desk limitation?

                • -8

@xenoic: humans are able to go to the moon but a 48" monitor is too much because desks are short

                  • @abctoz:

humans are able to go to the moon

                    Wasn't that a hoax?

                  • +1

@abctoz: I like how youā€™ve connected the topic to going into space. You must be smoking something good.

      • +2

Seems like it's listed for 2.4K AUD on JB HI FI.

  • +4

They should make a 30" version and also shrink the price to $700. I have been waiting forever for an affordable Oled PC monitor.

  • +2

I've got this. Took a while to get used to the size but it's outstanding.

  • +2

Bargain. Love mine, reading mode screen setting great to use as a general monitor. 42 inch lg c2 way over 2k.

  • +2

I'd love to get one of these…. and a card big enough to drive it lol

    • +1

Itā€™ll be the same as driving as any 4K monitor. The size of the monitor will not make a difference

      • +1

I have a 6700xt but at 4k res, it's not beefy enough for decent playable frame rates. 1440p will do me fine for a few years more lol

        • Yeah I agree itā€™s going to get decent frame rates at 4K. Iā€™m running the 38ā€ Alienware which works out to be 4K res by pixel count. It was struggling bad on the 2070 but handles ok with a 3080.

Perhaps sacrificing on the quality will help on pushing the frame rates a bit higher.

  • +3

It is probably worth spending a bit more to get LG C1 , just for Dolby Vision

    • $800 more though

      • With discounts and gift card, it can be had for $1400

        Eg 10% jbhi fi + 10% off gift card = $1456

    • +1

If you want to watch tv maybe. PCs never had great support for DV

  • Whats the main difference between this and c1?
Apart from Dolby Vision and tv capability?

    • +4

The c1 has full bandwidth HDMI 2.1 ports whereas the ports on the gigabyte are capped at 24gbps, which can cause issues depending on what devices you're using and may cause issues in future. The c1 also has tv functions and apps built in for Netflix etc.

However, the gigabyte does have a dp port, and more gamer focused features.

      • On top of the above and apart from smart features/image processing
        * LG is slightly brighter especially in hdr
        * LG has less aggressive ABL and can be turned off whereas the gigabyte can't (although service menu has just been exposed apparently)
        * LG has had several generations of 48" displays to iterate on. This is gigabytes first 48" oled and there genuinely seems to be countless comments of quirks and instabilities from the software side.

        Gigabyte also has:
        * built in kvm
        * wake on activity features like a proper monitor (with the lg its a tv so you'll be using the remote to turn it on/off although I have heard there's work arounds for this).

        • I'm curious where you saw about the FO48U service menu being discovered? I couldn't find it with a quick google.

      • Where did you get the 24gbps info from?

According to the manual at https://www.gigabyte.com/Monitor/AORUS-FO48U/support#supportā€¦ (in the "supported timing list" section), it supports 3840x2160 at 120Hz over both DP and HDMI.

In the "input/output" section it says:
2x HDMI 2.1 (6G + DSC only, no support for 6G and above)
1x DP1.4 (shares DSC with HDMI port)

        What does 6G mean here?

I'm not much of a gamer but I was planning to run my whole desktop at 3840x2160 120Hz. So you don't think this will support that?

        • +1

It is 24gbps but if you have a video card that supports dsc compression youā€™ll be fine, the only problem is with ps5s I believe.

        • +1

The giveaway is DSC. if it supported the full 48gbps bandwidth no compression would be required for 4k120 4:4:4.

I haven't tinkered much yet, on devices that support DSC you should be able to run 4k120 4:4:4, what graphics card are you running? on a ps5 you may be able to run 4k120 at 4:2:0. The advantage of this over a TV is that gigabyte have a bunch of software features in their attempts at reducing burn in. Burn in isn't too common if you calibrate your settings correctly and don't run everything on max. I've been using an LG OLED55B6T (made in 2016) and had no issues with burn in, but there is the occasional image retention. i'm just waiting for the LG 42 inch oled to drop in price before i buy one to replace my 34inch xiaomi.

That's one thing that I hate about the hdmi 2.1 standard, they only have to support the hdmi 2.0 features, the hdmi 2.1 features are optional.

          • @DangerNoodle: I've only got a gtx1060 3Gb, will that work for 4k120 with this monitor? It has DP 1.4 so that should, right?

Like I said it's only for office apps, not games. I know I won't get 4k120 ingame out of it, lol. Planning to upgrade the GPU at the end of the year when the new ones come out.

I like the idea of the 42" but this price seems too good to pass up. Don't know what I'll do to extend the size of my desk though. Currently I have a 43" and a 32", I'd like to keep the 43" in addition to this 48" - that's a lot of desk space!!

I've got a 55C7 as my TV, like you I haven't had any problems with burn-in. I did get a free screen replacement for the LUT rectangle issue though.

I am ultra-paranoid about static images on it though, I never let it sit on any screen for too long and never pause on a bright screen. Also I only have Oled light on about 40, I find it plenty bright enough.

            • @mortymorty: Unfortunately not, I believe with DP 1.4 DSC is optional and only 2000 series has dsc. I have a 1080 and best I could do is 4K 85hz 10 bit HDR. The best 120hz is 4K 8 bit 4:2:2 SDR.

              • @cheng2008: Thanks.

So you have this monitor? Are you sure it can do 4k85? Because it only lists 4k60 and 4k120 in the supported resolutions in the manual.

                • @mortymorty: Yeah I got it a few weeks back. Officially yes it's only 120 and 60 but you can just go to Nvidia control panel to make a custom resolution. Also you might need to update the card firmware first, it's called Graphics Firmware Update for DisplayPort 1.3 and 1.4 Displays.

            • @mortymorty: Hard to tell. I can't find anywhere if the gtx1060 supports DSC over DP. It's more of whether or not the tv will support the signal being sent. Worst case you could switch to 4:2:0 chroma or just run 4k60. I'm holding out because I'm not in any hurry, will just wait for January and buy clearance run out models.

For the PC I would just run a dark or black background, set taskbar to autohide, run browsers in full screen and on dark mode, set dynamic screensavers, etc.

              • @DangerNoodle: This monitor will support all the settings in question but the 1000 series can't output it since it doesn't support DSC. Also IMO this is the best price or very close to it, but if you want to wait till Jan Chinese monitors are already popping up with the new 42" panels and they're pretty competitive in price, perhaps they'll start selling here by then.

  • -3

why is so big for a monitor, that is a TV

    • +3

You should go look up what a monitor means it's got nothing to do with size.

    • It's called screen real estate. The more, the better.

    • They're using an OLED panel that was originally meant for TVs, that's why. It'll probably take a while (another 1-2 years) before we see 4K/120Hz OLED panels show up in smaller form factors such as 32" or 27".

  • If only it had gsync certification ><

  • Bumped, bookmarked I want one lolz

  • I use dark/night mode on most things and backgrounds due to size. Plenty of real estate for windows, but like most things you get used to it.

Don't much like smaller ones now.

  • +1

its hilarious watching samsung trying to drip feed 4k 144hz monitors to the public, meanwhile OLEDS are like $300 more lol

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/704366

for those looking for a high end gaming monitor nothing beats this deal currently imo

the 1ms pixel response times alone is enough to make any serious gamer salivate, you finally have something that is faster than TN panels that the pro gamers are still using lol…

  • +1

I have been watching out for this monitor for weeks now and I know that they're huge stocks coming this week from other retailers (Umart, Computer Alliance, PLE, PCCG) so I would say wait for a few days if you prefer local pick up. The price might even go down further.

    • How do you know more stock is coming? If so I might wait to get a lower price

      • +2

"I have been watching out for this monitor for weeks now". I have asked multiple retailers (Computer Alliance, PC Byte replied), and they said stocks are coming this week. Just since Thursday last week, most retailers drop their prices to $1099 even though they didn't have stocks https://www.staticice.com.au/cgi-bin/search.cgi?q=fo48u. Some retailers have ETA on their websites. Only Mwave and Scoptec had stocks now, their prices were $1299 few days ago (properly old stocks).

    • +1

Doubt they'll drop prices much further, the LG C2 is not as cheap as expected and these are selling like hotcakes at this price.

    • I might also wait for a few more days if it will further drop to $1039 as the lowest price in the past.

  • +1

I love this monitor, went from 32" 2k curved with 6700xt and got this and a 6900XT and its fantastic.. love it 4k gaming is awesome.. excel in 4k is awesome to so much data!

  • +3

I picked up one of these on a previous deal. Came from a 34inch Alienware.

I have a relatively large, deep desk, and while it's definitely very large, it's not too large.

Has been absolutely phenomenal for playing Elden Ring. I scoot back from the desk a bit and use a controller and it's a gorgeous experience.

For browsing I just size down my windows, have a few open. No issues.

The ABL is annoying. Not so annoying that it's made me consider a different monitor. But if a fix comes out to turn it off, I'll be happy.

It's not perfect, but I paid more than this for my Alienware a few years ago, and the big OLED boi craps all over it.

    • -1

Do you prefer the flat panel over curved? Thinking of buying this but only thing stopping me is it's not curved for such a large screen.

      • yeah I have both and going back to the 32" curved it looks really curved after using the 48" but for most gaming the 48" is so much better!

        • +1

When I had the curve, I loved the curve. Then I got used to the curve. Then I stopped noticing the curve.

I noticed the OLED wasn't curved at first. Now I don't.

  • Anyone used one of these with a soundbar setup? Specifically a Samsung soundbar setup.
