Do You Buy Games at Full Price?

Or is it against the religion of OzBargain? This considering the average mid-AAA game in the $40+ category.

why isnt buying cd keys on the cheap a poll option? :C

    • +3

      What's a CD?

    • +5

Maybe because I value developers to continue to bring up good and exciting games- so don't mind paying 60-100$ for a game when most ppl spend that much a week for coffee.. -__-

      • +1

Maybe because I value developers to continue to bring up good and exciting games

Like cyberpunk? Bf2042? Hell even Switch Sports is lacking in content

      • +2

LMAO oh man please list all the triple-a titles you've brought for full price in the last 3 years

      • You do know those developers don't really see a difference if you bought the game for $100 or if you bought it for $20. Most of that money goes to the marketing budget and then to the Big Developer Studios.

It's only independent developers or boutique Indie Teams which will see a difference, and they usually price their works competitively (eg $20 initially, and later $5 on-sale). And more and more often, I see them making their games free (no Piracy) and they're being compensated with Ad Revenue (inside the App, Site, Game etc) and/or with In-Game Items.

The best way to help developers is to email/tweet them directly, buy their product, and throw some beer money their way. A friend of mine made a stupid game, it was free and had Ad-Revenue. He got plenty of positive messages, and when his Beer Money tallied up, he had to hire an Accountant so it could be Taxed properly. Said it was much easier than his usual IT work, and that side-hobby paid more than his whole yearly salary by that point. It is an exploding market. (hence why Apple is the leading gaming company in the world, they just sit-back and collect their 10%-30% cut, whilst Nintendo who is more creative is paltry in their revenue)

        • +1

          This post <3 ❤️ but :(

        • +1

Sad state of things when microtransactions and ad revenue beats innovative and creative titles
Still, they do caters to different groups of gamers. The causal mobile market has just been exploding recently compared to the traditional game marktet

        • True but then that's like most businesses- does that mean we should stop buying "australian" or stop buying ipad/iphones because the actually developers get little.

          • +2

            @funnysht: Yes.
If a business that is Australia-based is simply not ideal, don't buy it. As I alluded to above, there are plenty of ways to compensate people or help them directly. Don't throw your money into the pockets of fat-cats and think that is making a difference.

      • Wait, do people really? Coz if that's the case then a) why the f would anyone not buy a machine and b) i hope at least ppl are using reusable or washable cups and c) do they even remember the time when they didn't?

      • Who is spending $60 a week on coffee? That's against the OzBargainb code!

  • +6

I recently bought this game at $3.99 full price, as you can see I am living the high roller life.

But no, after years (decades?) of humble bundle and getting every free Epic Games ever, I have a 4 digit game backlog that I am saving up for my children and/or dog to play.

I believe at some point in my misspent youth I bought Factorio at full price and Rimworld at 10% off (which to me is effectively full price). Both of these were to support the developer.

    • +2

Factorio doesn't go on sale, so you can only buy it full price. Then again, at > 1000 hours in it, $40 was super cheap $/hour

    • You can play Vampire Survivors for free on https://poncle.itch.io/vampire-survivors

      • +2

That's a demo version with far less content, and I prefer to indulge in the finest full-priced $3.99 luxury.

    • Ha ha with the price you mentioned I knew what game it was

As I purchased it two weeks ago and have been playing it more than any AAA game in the past 3 years

  • +4

Q Do You Buy Games at Full Price?
A I only collect weekly free epicgame, never buy

    • +2

I recently saw that I have 236 games on the epic store of which I have ever only installed a total of 6 and spent a combined total of <10hours playing. Probably spent almost as much time redeeming and reading comments about upcoming free games than actually playing them….

          This is the whey

      • I'm just over 100, only FrostPunk and Cities Skylines I've put over 24hrs each. I've tried perhaps 10 others from the list so far.

    Depends on the original price
    Never > $50…
COD and shit like that @100- 150… no way

how about ingame purchases? I dont buy any…
    https://www.news.com.au/technology/gaming/diablo-immortal-fa…

  • I've bought some like factorio, stardew valley & terraria etc because they were cheap even at their full price. Never a AAA game tho because I just don't have 60-90$ to spare on something that might end up being broken or just plain bad.

  • +3

what a refreshing change to the usually topics u create

rarely pay full price unless I know it will be sold out and I want it now

  • +4

Yes, most games that I'm highly anticipating will be a day one purchase.

But also it depends what you consider "full price", because there are usually day one deals on new releases. Take 'The Quarry' on PS5 for example, which is releasing this Friday. EB Games are predictably the most expensive at $110, which is the same price as buying the digital version on the Playstation Store. But Amazon have it for $81, so not "full price".

Then it's a question of how quickly those new release games will drop in price, which frankly depends on the game. 'Elden Ring' has been out for 3+ months now, and it hasn't really dropped in price. For PS5, Amazon had it for $79 on day one, and it's $81 on Amazon right now.

  • +1

Only get the freebies posted on OzB.

  • +3

Considering the "AAA" dogshite being released these days why would you, usually wait six months for it to be patched into oblivion then buy it on a decent sale

    • Keep TLOU1+2 out ya f***en mouf!

  • I have purchased COD every new release, Day 1… Well except last 2 years…

  • Depends.

If it's from a franchise/series I absolutely adore (e.g. Yakuza, Persona, Marvel), I'll pay full price. Of course, I always read reviews and watch gameplay before buying - but they won't normally sway my opinion too much if it's about something I love.

If I'm skeptical about them but they're highly rated and well-reviewed after release, I'll put it on my wishlist and just wait until it drops to a reasonable price. For example, Kena: Bridge of Spirits looked a bit clunky at first glance, but I'm so happy I got it on sale, it's an absolutely wonderful journey.

If it's something like the new Far Cry, Assassins Creed, COD or anything else that will probably crash and burn, I normally stick away and then consider picking them up when they're in the bargain bin.

  • -1

Normally, I don't buy full-price games, as it is just so much for a game, especially on PS5(FXXK Sony). But, even said that I still willing to pay for some titles, recently I have bought the Elden Ring at full price, as it is worth that. So, it really depends on the quality of the games.

  • +2

Even if a game came out yesterday I'd look for the cheapest cd key.

Latest AAA game was Elden Ring and I got that for around $70 which was worth it.

  • +1

Maybe 30% of the time but only because ive been anticipating it for awhile. Also, Im at the stage in my life where i can just comfortably afford a game at a release without waiting a year.

  • +3

the smartest people buy physical games asap for the cheapest price they can find, clock them in a week or less and sell them for 10 bucks less then they paid for it….

my brother in law does this for 90 percent of this PS4/5 games

    • +1

You also get 3 months price protection with a lot of credit cards, so you could probably claim if it dropped

    • +3

smart man, he knows he won't touch it after the first playthrough so he just rents it for $10 instead.

Man kinda wish blockbuster still existed to rent new release games like in the old days.

  • I have purchased 2 ps4 games full price in the past for release day delivery. Fifa 21, which I barely played. And watchdogs legion which in my opinion was shit and not worth that amount. On my pc I occasionally buy full price from steam if I can't find a cheap key and I'm desperate to play the game or DLC.

  • +5

I have only bought 2 games full price, one was Skyrim on launch day as I was so excited about it, paid like $100 and then 6 months later it is in discount bins for $15… That taught me a lesson. The other was yesterday as I was going on a trip and wanted something to play on my Switch in the evenings so I bought Firewatch from the eShop.

    • +1

6 months later it is in discount bins for $15

Was it really? Surprised they managed to re-release it 3 or 4 different times at full RRP.

      • True, and when they released it for Switch it probably would be cheaper to buy a second hand PS3 with the game than to buy a Switch copy lol

    • Firewatch is worth it's RRP IMO, great game. Played through it at least 4 times and it never gets old.

      • +1

Just finished it - I was kind of hoping it would last the whole trip but it didn't. Still 2 nights to go 😔 It was a great story though. Kind of like a 3D visual novel. Do you have any recommendations for similar games?

        • Nah, there aren't really many walking simulators like Firewatch imo. The Long Dark is a similar graphic style, but it's more of a survival game. Still a very enjoyable game though.

Road 96 is a half decent game. Not exactly the same feel as Firewatch, and not as well polished. Wasn't one of my faves, but you might fancy it.

I'm really just waiting for Campo Santo's next game, which is In The Valley of Gods - it's been in development for a while, no release date as of yet. That'll probably be the closest thing to the Firewatch experience.

I've been looking high and low for a similar game to Firewatch for the better part of 2 years or so now, but haven't had much luck tbh.
Chris Remo is one of the devs of the game, I've had a chat or two with him on Reddit about the game's development, didn't ask him about any similar games or games he took inspiration from, but you might be able to ask him for any similar titles. He's decently active on the Firewatch subreddit and does participate in the community (at least he did a year or so ago when I talked to him). Hope this helped a bit lol.

          • +1

@CrispyChrispy: Thanks, I'll look into Road 96, and keep my eye out for news about Valley of the Gods. Do you like visual novels generally, if so you might like 999 / Virtues Last Reward / Zero Time Dilemma. I have wanted to find more games like them for ages. I guess I can't say they have the same feel as Firewatch, the story is more weird and less realistic than Firewatch, but similar heart thumping freaked feeling, wondering what is going to happen next and why the hell is this all happening kind of thing (but tempered knowing there was no combat, no monster that could jump out at you that you'd have to fight, the story progression is under your own control). Plus puzzles. Something missing from Firewatch was any puzzles at all - except for figuring out navigation. And it seemed like no matter what dialogue option you chose in Firewatch it basically ended up in the same place. Like when I told Delilah that she should say something about the missing girls, she ended up not saying anything anyway. 999 / VLR / ZTD all have at least a dozen endings each depending on your choices.

    • +1

I bought the big box Skyrim CE with 2 preorder novels and the CE Strategy Guide at release. Often think of getting rid of it eventually too.

  • I buy very few games, if any at all, at RRP. I don't really play the latest games, more ones from the 2010s era. I've saved some good money buying from some CD key sellers, had very minimal problems with them.

  • The most I paid for a game was Breath of the Wild for Wii U. It was full price but I got a $10 off coupon for newsletter sign up at Target.
I have been very tempted with Elden Ring lately though

    • -3

Don't buy ER for full price. It will go on sale eventually or just buy it used. It's a forgettable experience and 80% of the content is just copy-pasted filler. Not missing out on much.

This coming from someone who ranks Dark Souls and Bloodborne in my personal top 5.

  • +1

Only certain games on PC like Call of duty that literally never goes on sale.
or if i feel the game is cheap enough at the full price (not all games are $100+ full price) and ill get enough enjoyment out of it to be worth it.

    • The whole OG COD MW series is still crazily priced and they never go on sale for too cheap at all. In order to buy 4, MW2 and MW3 it's atleast $50 or so, and that's off key sellers/marketplaces.

  • Yes, I buy from EB Games to get carrots/flybuys points and then price protection when the price inevitably goes down

  • +4

Very rarely, if ever have I bought a game full price. I usually use price tracking sites, and buy when a game I wanted has a decent discount.

www.dekudeals.com is great for monitoring Nintendo switch game price drops. I also use www.psprices.com for PlayStation games, and www.isthereanydeal.com for PC titles.

  • +2

Now I have the money to buy a AAA game I have no time to play it. I would love to have a 100 hours to sink into elden scrolls and find all that cool stuff.

  • pre-order GT7 for PS5.
AND bought a steering wheel + stand too, but can't make time to play thx to XBOX Gamepass $1 deal again.

  • +1

By the time I'm rich enough to buy games at full price I'll probably have stopped caring about games altogether.

  • +3

Too many games in the backlog to justify buying games at full price, unless it's a game I MUST play at launch and put at the front of the queue. These days, with so many games competing for our time, it's hard to find a game like that though…

  • The Ozbargain way is to way for a sale.

  • I grow up on the 80 and 90 arcades, countless pocket money went into those machines
Still buy the occasional arcade game on sale on steam mostly 50-70% off Never paid full price for any game not much of a gamer

Just casual arcade type gaming every so often for some fun no more than an hour max but mostly of the time I played probably 15-30min

  • For me I love my game sales and will happily be a patient gamer (since I have plenty of games that are already on the go in my backlog). There are some games that I will 100% buy at release/full price and even pre-order: any Blizzard game/expac (though not since last year), Final Fantasy, Zelda and Pokemon.

Then there are some games that I just enjoy, but somehow I get sucked into buying multiple times… Borderlands 3 I just HAD to buy on Epic Games (to play it at launch), Steam (for the achievements, that I never got around to), and PS5 (which I did get the platinum for last month)

    • +1

Ye Nintendo titles are the only one's I'll pay full price for, not just because of the amazing work that goes into it but the fact that their games give you the full experience optimised from day 1. None of this waiting 6 months for a patch to fix the audio bug or just to be able to press the jump button.

  • +1

Probably only paid full price for Microsoft flight simulator.

    • I didn't mind paying full retail for MSFS. The last time I bought it was 2007 :-)

  • Last game I paid full price for was fallout 4 on launch. Never ever again.

    • The last game I paid full price for was Fallout 76 😂

  • For Xbox I highly recommend Eneba.

  • Having worked in software development, I know how hard devs work on these things especially in the face of strict launch dates forced upon them - and I'm happy to pay full price for a game I'm likely to spend a decent amount of time being entertained by.

Compare it to a new release movie - $20 for a ticket, for 2-3 hours entertainment… vs $80-100 for a new release game with sometimes 100hrs of entertainment.

    • -1

Let me know when you pay full price for a movie only to wait 6 months for the ending because it wasn't developed in time, or the audio was missing from half the film.

Still baffles me how you can't even get a refund from the store when a game is not as advertised.

    • I'd love to know how that applies to a game like BF 2042; someone spent time making a fake trailer and conned everyone.

      • +1

I blame the execs and marketing people, who refuse to budge the release dates - not the devs.

  • +1

I used to buy games at launch but got burned too many times. These days I have a backlog of AAA games to play and I'd rather not invest my time into an unproven game.

  • I'm paying more for retail PC games than ever before. It really depends on how many copies are available. In the past, I could comfortably wait until they were under $20. Now I have to pay over $40 or else they sell out. And there's extra postage because they're usually overseas.

    • +1

I went in to browse the selection at EB Games and the guy told me they've stopped selling PC games as they didn't make any moeny from it, but still sell pc accessories…
Now its digital only for me

      • +1

Yeah, even Amazon is struggling to sell them. I can change the best sellers page with one purchase. :-)
        https://www.amazon.com.au/gp/bestsellers/videogames/52509390…

Two years ago, my local EB had just a little shelf. It's probably filled with dolls now. They're still selling online which is much better. At least we get sealed games, not opened cases with stickers on everything.

        • +1

Man, I miss the days of EB games when they had a whole wall of PC games. It was like a huge library of great titles to pick from. This was probably around 15-20 years ago.

  • +3

Even asking a question like that should be against OZB rules!

We all should know the answer.

    • +2

      Sailing the cove?

  • For example… Live A Live and Xenoblade 3 for switch I've pre ordered at full price… because they are gems and I want the early experience :)

  • I bought 2 games at full price pre-release, never again as both games didn't match expectations

    • What games were they?

I often find that people who are disappointed with Pre-ordered games go into them with expectations that have blown far out of proportion (with the exception of publishers/developers that announce features that are not included upon release - No Mans Sky as an example)

      • X-Rebirth and Just Cause 4, both series have been fantastic, but X-Rebirth was so buggy and Just Cause was too visually darker with different / harder gameplay dynamics it wasnt enjoyable to me.

  • +2

I only pay full price for JRPGs and Nintendo games that likely won't be discounted by much. Been burned a few times waiting for a JRPG to drop in price for it to then become unavailable and expensive due to low print runs :(

Everything else (PS5, Xbox, PC) is purchased when on sale.

  • +1

I buy PS5 games on release with 28 Degrees card price protection and claim price reductions when they inevitably drop. It's like waiting for a sale without the waiting

    • … now that's smart thinking!

  • Nah. Unless it's a must buy, wait a few months and pick it up Cashies for a fraction of the price.

    • I feel bad buying from Cash Converters. That great deal (sort of) is only possible because someone was scammed out of the true value of their goods.

It's one step above buying stolen property. It's a product of someone else's misfortune.

      • +1

Nobody forces them to go to CC. There's plenty of options online to sell items yourself. Sometimes it must just be easier to head down with a bag of games you won't play again and get $50 for them.
