  You typically don't buy these just for the end product, you buy these because you want to put the kit together yourself. The SMD vs through hole components make for a different experience in building these kits.

    Spot on. I built 2 of these mainly for the smd soldering practice. The first one didn't work straight away because one of my solder joints on the IC wasn't good, but by the time I finished my 2nd one I had noticeably better soldering and it worked the first go. It's fun to make and then to see working (hopefully) at the end. Great value at AU$2.64 each if it wasn't for the shipping cost, unless you spend enough to qualify for free shipping.
