Maybe do some research yourself and just appreciate OP going out of his/her way for sharing a good deal

      • Never said this was a bad deal, I was genuinely curious. Don't understand why I'm being negged. I have already upvoted the deal.

The spec sheet says 185mb/s, however it also says 180mb/s on the 6Tb SMR drive so I don't actually trust the figures as written - hence why I was asking for input from others.

$23.50/Tb is a good price, but the (stated) speeds are also only 3/4 of my existing drives' actual speeds. I personally think for such large capacities that the throughput becomes a much more important factor than pure capacity, and thus paying up to $25/Tb for additional speed is a worthwhile tradeoff as per prior HDD deals we've seen before.

You don't understand why you're being negged? I'll assume you're serious and take that question at face value

It's because the premises of your question and query are both ridiculous and frankly rude. OP isn't associated with the store and under no obligation to answer sales questions you could easily google for yourself.

Also no one here is asking you to "put up with a big drop in throughput", enjoy the deal or don't. No need to whinge if it doesn't suit your personal situation.

It's like commenting on posts here about toys "I don't think I'll have a use for this, I don't have children"

          • @sovereign01:

No need to whinge if it doesn't suit your personal situation.

I was offering my personal experience for comparison to the current deal offered. I would have much rather learned from your personal experiences as well, but you did not offer any.

Don't assume malice when there can be ignorance.

They do seem to be becoming rarer. Just looking at the datasheets for Seagate and WD's consumer line-ups for example, only their 500GB and 1TB drives are CMR. Everything else (except this 8TB for some reason) is SMR. You'd have to get into either of their more specialised ranges to get CMR. That was my reasoning anyway.

      • -3

        Define "consumer drive".

Ironwolf, Ironwolf Pro, Barracudo Pro, Firecuda, Skyhawk, Skyhawk AI - all CMR drives.

Purple, Red 8TB+, Red Pro, Black - all CMR drives.

I'd hardly call Ironwolf specialised. Same for Blacks and Firecuda.

        • The “pro” in the name is a bit of a giveaway. Firacuda doesn’t come in 8tb.

And specialist means to specialise in something. Like surveillance or NAS.

Black, sure. I’d also put that as one of the few remaining. For the price it’d want to be.

          • +1

@freefall101: Prosumer is a thing. Never said Firecuda came in 8TB.

NAS is hardly specialist these days is it? Every man and his dog has one.

          • @freefall101: I think in this case, pro is just a marketing term.

On short why is CMR better then SMR? Yes I know I could google it but love to hear from you dudes then google 😉 is a WD 8TB Elements External drive CMR?

    • +7

OP is right, most 8TB consumer drives are unfortunately SMR - Above that they tend to go back to CMR.

e.g The entire Seagate Barracuda Compute lineup is now SMR, most WD drives <8TB etc etc

Furthering OPs point, it could probably be argued 18tb etc drives which are all CMR/Helium are not typical consumer hardware.

how do you bypass the issue when you run out of SATA cable ports on your motherboard?

    • +2

You can get PCIe expansion cards that give you more ports. I tried looking into that when I was originally thinking of doing my new NAS with 9x4TB drives as mine only has 6 SATA ports. There seems to be a lot of contention about what to get, though, so I'd definitely do some more research as I got a bit overwhelmed.

    • +1

Something like this will work. https://www.amazon.com/Intel-RAID-Expander-Card-RES2SV240/dp…
I've got 24 drives hooked onto one of these.

  • +1

I read the price as $118 and almost shat myself. Guess I'll keep dreaming.

  • Thanks OP. Ordered one :)

    • I don't get it, what's so funny?

  • Serious question, is this recommended for surveillance NVR or should I stick to Purple Pros?

    • +2

Purples for sure. This would be great for storage/archive data. Not particularly good with constant writes.

      • Thanks! Easy decision then.

      • This is perfect for me then! Thank you

    • No it isn't, stick to the purple my friend!

  • What do people store on such big drives? I've had a 1TB drive for about 10 years now and I still haven't filled it up completely.

    • +1

Steam games, photo backups, movies instead of on discs. As soon as you do any kind of video editing your space needs kind of increase exponentially.

If you have bad internet it makes sense to keep as much as you can available offline for when the connection inevitably drops. Can't really use Netflix or Disney in a standalone sense, where Plex becomes a better option.

Finally, if you have enough data to backup that doesn't fit on a cloud service, you really need multiple drives to increase redundancy and allow for inevitable failures. I can download steam games again, sure, but I can't cheaply backup the 5Tb of photos and videos to the cloud, so a selection of HDDs in a NAS as well as offline in a safe location is a great option.

      • +1

Yep, upgrading my NAS from 6TB to ~30TB with these. Using it as a Plex server for high quality films and TV shows as well as a back-up of video projects.

  • Bought 3 of these for a nas, Head parking set to 8sec from factory , but can be changed by idletool .

    • +1

Would you be able to point me in the direction of a guide or something to do this with?

    • Am I correct in saying you'd want to change this in a NAS use-case as it is always powered, therefore resulting in head parking increasing the load cycle count rapidly? Is this the primary reason you shouldn't use desktop drives in a NAS?
Would like to understand this better as well.

      • +1

that is my thinking , knowing how green drives used to cr@p out in nas, Hell i ran 4 x barracuda 2tbs for about 8 years, but had to replace 1 every few years, but that why raid 5 (or raid 5 +1)

  • That's a very good price, $23.50 per TB

  • Nice. Just purchased 2 x WD Blue 8TB and 2 x Crucial MX500 500gb SSD. Standard local shipping to Sydney was $10 for all 4 drives. Don't mind how long it takes as I'm not in a hurry. As this is a very good price for CMR 8tb desktop drives.

  • Bought one, impulse buy to be honest. is it really good?

oops! reviews are not that good https://www.scorptec.com.au/product/hard-drives-&-ssds/hdd-3…

Delivery isn't free btw. Just commenting because the post says the price delivered, but it's the price pickup.

    • Oh, interesting. It was free delivery at the time. I didn't get charged delivery for my order.

      • Must have been a limited time special.

        • Yes I paid $9 for shipping

          • @bazingaa: Well, I edited it last night to reflect the change but it's been changed back and locked for some reason.

            • +1

@WD Stevens: Yeah I saw that. Then later it was reverted and expired, even though the bargain is still technically active. Maybe an overzealous mod?

              • @IJustKnowStuff: yeah, deal is still on, mine was shipped from Adelaide yesterday right after ordering and now it is at Sunshine

  • +1

Got mine today, Speed looks fine.

  • Not sure why this is marked as expired, it's still running and appears to have stock pretty much everywhere.

It no longer comes with free shipping which it had at the start of this deal.

    • The offer now is $195 plus delivery ($10) so technically it's a different deal.
Apparently the original offer was until June 30th or when sold out. They haven't appeared to of sold out.
Does anyone have an email or reference to the original offer?
They told me they hit their free delivery quote. I'd love to see the terms of sale.
