    • Spend 2 grand and have a proper one

  • @Calmago

Does it come with a new battery or does the refurbishment process entails only testing

    • We replace batteries when required. T&C's require us to have a minimum 80% capacity.

      • +2

How does the 12-month warranty work with that?
Not much fun if they are 80% on arrival, but 60% a few months later.

  • Are these touch screen? We have similar machines at work and they are good.

    • Touch screen can actually be quite useful with laptops, have it on mine and it’s great

      • +3

when do you need to touch laptop screen?

seem unwieldy unless it can be folded like a tablet

        • +2

newer generations got used to poking everything with a finger

          • +3

@shabaka: Hate that, makes screen so dirty.

        • Touch screen is much better than you think.

For example, if you touch the screen in certain apps, when you use the mouse/trackpad again, the mouse will return where it was before you touched the screen. Extremely useful when you have multiple monitors. Even my home set up has a portable touch screen as my note taker and organiser.

@Wonderfool: just seem uncomfortable to me like you are using a mouse or touchpad and keyboard

then need to move your hand away from that
just to touch something on some app on a screen that will wobble (ie laptop) or some distance away (ie monitor)
then move it back down again to the touchpad or keyboard..

it is not like tablet where you holding it very close and your hand is always in close distance to the screen

The touch UI on the tablet is much better designed than Windows UI,
and the screen is usually more responsive to touch.

            • @pinkybrain: You'll be surprised how much more convenient it is. Sure, it's more effort, but it means that your mouse is in the right place for the next action, and in many time sensitive or precision based task, it's just easier. You also wouldn't alt tab incorrectly sometimes to change what you want. I play alot of games that requires me to take notes, and it's infinitely easier with a touch screen

And why would it wobble? You're just touching it, not collecting its debt lol. It's a slight wobble at best.

What app or games are using that requires you to touch the screen so much?
Are you using it on laptop or dual monitor on a pc setup.
Still don't understand how you are using it …

Also would it not be more convenient if you just used a tablet or piece of paper+pencil/pen + your game on pc or laptop..
no need to switch from anything… if you need to take notes so much..
It also means your arm is less tired due to less big movement.

The whole touch on monitor or laptop is not very popular for a reason..
cos as mentioned you can just move your mouse to touch the thing on the app on the screen
instead of moving your hand to the screen to touch the thing on the app then need move it back to the mouse or keyboard

Many apps or even windows apps e.g. explorer is just not design with touch in mind, instead it is meant for mouse and keyboard..
so the experience is not great vs actual tablet UI.

the point was making is that with laptop, the screen wobble every time you touch it.
which is annoying.. and makes the touch not feel solid

As pointed here, issues with touch on a laptop

                https://www.businessinsider.com/touch-screen-laptops-microso…

2in1 laptops or detached screens like surface pro would be give a better touch experience due it being more like a tablet

                • @pinkybrain: I play alot of detective, puzzle and exploration games. In these cases, I'll use my touch screen as a notepad, as it'll allow me to quickly move around the document with just a finger touch, at the exact spot I want it to be, even in full screen. Once I'm done, I'll click my mouse without thinking, and I'll be back in the game

At work, I need to use 3 screens. Alt tabbing or recent menus gets very confusing with so many different pages. Not only do I have quick access to the notetaking document with just a finger press, i can also use the touchscreen for the taskbar, allowing me to pull the exact page up. This set up uses laptop, and the wobble isn't that notable.

I'm not trying to say the touch screen is the best experience, it has issues. But it brings alot of convenience to the table.

  • The pictures show 2 different laptops.

  • so are these the touch screen version?
also would it be ok for low settings playing FF14? im going away in few weeks so would only use it for two weeks than resell lol.

    • They are not touch.

      • does the 17' version have the geforce gpu as well? its not listed like the same as other so im not sure.

        • Yes it does.

  • Is RAM upgradeable or soldered?

    • +1

Its not soldered, there's 2 x SO-DIMM slots in these things

  • Must say the previous deal was very tempting. Almost pulled trigger on it.

  • Hi OP.
Does it have an LTE modem, I no its not listed but can only ask.

  • I'm thinking of buying this for TAFE.

Anyone have any experience with refurbished laptops and have any feedback?

    • In terms of capability, it should handle internet browsing, word processing just fine.
You should be very mindful about weight and battery life (if you're taking it to classes, if it's online learning don't worry about it and don't bother reading the rest of this comment).
You might think 2kg is not a big deal to carry around, even if you throw in charger (maybe half a kilo?), but you'll hate it (especially if you have a train/bus too catch).
Not sure what the rooms are like - but at my uni there's few power outlet in classes (plus you have to grab the seat next to them), but you'll probably be able to charge in the common area in between classes. If you have to carry it, aim for 11-14".

Personally I'd buy this one instead: https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/194725707516

Smaller, so more portable and battery life will be better.

      Or this one: https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/203471219941
It's only 8GB RAM, but that's still enough, and at just over $300 it's so cheap it's almost disposable.

      • Thank you so much for those suggestions, they look great!

      • Does the second one you linked have space for extra ram? I have ram in a laptop that has just died. I also have a larger SSD. So could transfer both over.

Maybe I should look for laptop shells that I can put the ram and SSD in!

      • They look good but screen is only 12.5.

  • To me it looks 2 different laptop while click on the link.

  • Very much out of the laptop world but I did have one of these for uni and it has lasted over 10 years.

I only need it for web browsing, YouTube, basic excel work. Basic stuff. This price point seems right and I'm happy to buy refurb

Is this a good deal? Seems like the previous i7 deals have been very popular. So i7 must be good? How does this compare to the previous dell i7 deal?

  • Never bought refurbished laptops before.
    Are they reliable?

How to find out how old they are or how long they have been used? (Or does this matter?)
