This might be a niche product, but it's actually on special today. I bought one to go with my Pixel XL to prolong its battery life, and extend my free Google Photo uploads. I actually soft bricked my phone trying to root it, thank the heavens that I was able to reverse that disaster.

Chargie halts the charging process at your chosen percentage (the lower, the better) to protect the expensive and non-replaceable battery. Its innovative app can also schedule the charging process so you can top up only when you need it.

Chargie is a one-of-a-kind solution to the early death of batteries. All you need is the Chargie stick connected between your phone and your charger. Of course, you need to have the app installed, too. Just set the charge level you desire and let your phone juice up. When the percentage reaches the desired level, Chargie simply stops the current flow, externally, no matter what your phone is. This way, you will save your battery’s life because by not charging to 100% it will not degrade as much and will eliminate the risk of overheating

      Spoiler, it's $50

      • Well really depends which one you buy - the A or C, and how many you buy…

I use the app accubattery. It doesn't stop the current to flow but alerts me when it reaches the charge level I defined.
Also I only turn on my pixel XL when I need to backup my pics.

    • Yeah I just like the idea of just having my phone always plugged in, always backing up photos.. and.. also me being able to travel and knowing its just plugged in and ready to go.

  • So this goes between the power cord and the phone and acts as some sort of cut-off switch once the phone charges to a certain level? There's no way to just use an app for this, and cut out the dongle entirely?

    • Well I did look into it, and there was nothing that I could find to physically stop the charge. Only alerts, in which I would then have to physically unplug the phone or what-have-you. Like AccuBattery… But I wanted to leave the house and not worry about the battery overcharging, overheating… etc.

I have been tempted to get one for a while but figure it is potentially easier to just replace my battery when needed. Although I do wish modern phones did have some sort of charge limiting built in.

After about 15 months from new my S20+ 5g battery was lasting for about 1hr SOT per charge (charged frequently as I tend to tether to it while on client sites, and plugged into AA while driving often).

Put off replacing the battery for a long time, but for $70 I think I am back up to 5-6 hours SOT.

    • Yeah battery replacement is a good way to get around this. But I failed so drastically with trying to root my phone… I just figured… blah… this is so easy. And.. can use it for future phones… so… just bit the bullet.

      • Battery replacement is not really a good option but more of a last resort.
Last I looked, it's really difficult, if not impossible to get your hands on unused genuine batteries.

You'll just be rolling the dice with off brands that claim to be genuine.

Also most later phones use a tonne of adhesive, so it's not easy to cleanly replace the battery.
It's usually best to wait until you crack the screen or something.

Hopefully though, with the right to repair movement it might make things a bit better on this front.

Pretty sure my s22+ has the charge cut-off inbuilt if you want to limit the charge to say 80%

    • +1

      Yup.

My Samsung A52s has it under the battery settings as "Protect battery".
Specifically it limits charging to 85%.

Just make sure to turn it off before you go bush.

But my girlfriend doesn't have any bu…oh you meant something else.

        • Gf may be too young if she doesn't

      • I can't seem to find that setting in my a52s 5g version

        • +1

          Settings—>Battery and device care—>Battery—>More battery settings—>Protect battery

          • @wwwsam: Hmm strange i don't have protect battery in there

            • @shane2770: Weird, mine's also the A52s 5G.

              Is yours up to date?
I don't remember if it had it out of the box, but there's been a few large updates since then that have added/changed a few things.

              • +1

@wwwsam: Okay thanks mate I'll see if I've missed a update cheers
                Edit update fixed thanks

is this a solution to a problem that doesn't exist? Samsung has this built in as does Motorola. I'd be surprised if pixel didn't given Google develops Android.

also as ShouldIBuyIt pointed out it's 50 bucks. cost/benefit analysis, anyone?

    • I think all phone manufacturers applied this on the system level.

    https://www.xda-developers.com/google-pixel-battery-charging…

You can do this for free via settings on your Android phone

    • I followed the links to the pixel doco
And it's not clear whether it fits the same use case.

To help preserve battery health, your phone automatically limits charging to about 80% under certain conditions:
      * Continuous charge under high battery drain conditions, like game play.
      * Continuous charge for 4 days or more.

    • Also says this "The feature is available on all Pixel phones, starting with the Pixel 3, and it automatically stops the devices from charging once the battery reaches 80%." Which is a newer model of phone than the one I'm going to be using this for.

  • What does the referral do? What does the referee and referrer get?

    • It says referrer gets 10% back on purchases. I just added it because they emailed me the link. I don't particularly need to refer anyone.

.org site for seller chargers. sounds dodgy to me

  • Should also be able to use a smart plug and tasker.

    • I couldn't be bothered to figure out how long to set the smart plug on and off for to keep it at a constant optimal charge level.. Just wanted easy. Well… i'll see how it goes - better be easy!!!

      • You set it to measure the current phone charge and cut it at 80%.

    • Pretty sure the xiaomi smart plugs i've bought have the feature built into the app.

  • samsung tab a8 has an option to limit the maximum charge to 85%

  • The app looks bare-bones and hasn't been updated since Sept 2021.

Saw some reviews in Google play and they don't look promising. Also, don't think this product plays well with PD chargers and wireless chargers. I have posted some reviews from google play below.

"I'm disappointed that it doesn't work with a PD charger because this is a Pixel house and that's all we have. Constant disconnects, very slow charging, software unreliable. I'll return it if they accept the item back. It's a great idea so I'll give it 3 stars for effort. Fix the hardware and software and I'll repurchase it."

"Have had this for about 9 months now. I have to reboot my phone every night in order to get it to connect for nightly recharge. Once it connects it does charge to set voltage - but only if phone is rebooted while Chargie is connected and app is running. Not recommended. Also, advertised as being able to limit charging on other smart devices (e.g. my smart watch) but no instructions given for that (and doesn't seem possible given that the device relies on charge state feedback from the app.)"

"I bought a charger A and C and am really digging both! When they work they're excellent. However I often have to manually reconnect through the app or plug and unplug the charging connector. Top up scheduler is a bit tricky to guess when to start, but I know the creator is working on an automatic process. Unfortunately charging doesn't work with the 2nd gen Pixel wireless stand. UI is super easy to understand at least. Overall a great idea held back by some software limitations and polish."

Based on the reviews and the high asking price, I'd think twice before buying this product.

  • If the phone is rooted you can use acc
    https://github.com/VR-25/acc
    https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/advanced-charging-control…
(also comes as a Magisk module)

    with AccA frontend
    https://github.com/MatteCarra/AccA/
    https://f-droid.org/packages/mattecarra.accapp/

This will let you limit charge level, slow down charging, schedule operations during night etc.
