8GB RAM and 256GB storage, so realistically you're spending just about $1000 before this laptop is remotely useful for gaming, then you have to deal with the mobile GTX 1650…

    • Just 1650 too, not TI

My Acer nitro's 10300h is way overkill for the 1650TI I've got

    • But it has an intel i5

For $100 more, difference between RTX3050 and GTX1650 is pretty big. Also, the 5600H will be much better than 10500H. Though, this isn’t that great a deal either

    • +4

      $150

      • +1

Ye for some reason I saw $899 and not $849. Upgrade is still worth it. It’s a massive performance difference and you lose out on features like DLSS.

    • +2

if you can get the spend to 1000, can take advantage of 12% shopback plus the current $150 bonus shopback challenge (1000 spend required).

      • Link to this offer?

        • +1

It is in the ShopBack app under earn more challenge

    • Amex has Dell spend and get 10% statement credit back up to $1,000 offer. Should make it an even better deal than this given the price gap now is only $50?
Edit: with ShopBack $150 combo it is only $750!

    • Sold out while it was in my cart.

Yap, we need at least 32gb ram to browse ozb /s

Need at least 16gb Ram to filter out JVs bold text

      • +11

No, they're negging because both he and you have shit attitudes.

      • +2

I negged them because they were talking shit as not everyone has the same requirements. My systems have 16GB, but just because I need 16GB doesn't mean everyone else does. Also in 2005 2GB was a large amount of RAM.

      • -3

Yeah I actually don't care about downvotes. Unlike these plebs, I don't get upset about imaginary internet points :)

        • +2

Yet you feel the need to insult them 🤔
          Hmm…

      • +5

I'm running 8gb on my laptop, it can't handle all the negs on your posts. You have a valid point.

    • +5

8GB is fine for everyday use. For gaming, 16GB is recommended but 8GB can suffice for most gaming.

    • +2

8GB is pretty tight but workable. Cheap and easy to upgrade if you want to go 16GB

    • +25

Yet in 2012 you thought 4gb was worth posting about…

      • +9

        Blimey. Pepperidge Farm remembers!

You have so much of a life making posts like this and not ignoring it.

Under $900 I would get the Asus.

    $1000, I would get the Dell g15 with 3050.

What's the best deal available for a laptop around $1000

  • +1

    8GB RAM isn't enough nowadays.

I don't play games but are still struggling with 85.0% to 95.0% RAM usage.

    • +6

Are you actually struggling though, or is windows just making efficient use of your ram, using all the available capacity to keep more stuff loaded?

RAM is there to be used

      • Leakage.

        • +2

You should see a plumber and/or urologist then

          • @OZKap: I start the day at 60.0% and end up with 90.0% at the end.

            • +1

@rektrading: Which is still not necessarily a bad thing. Obviously if your computer is slowing down at the end of the day, that's bad.

For example I went from 4gb to 8gb to 16gb, and at the end of a session I'd still have about the same percentage of memory usage, but everything was much faster with more ram, because my PC was having to store/retrieve from SSD less often

Whether your RAM is full of cached files or completely empty, it's all available for programs that really need it. Cached data in your RAM is marked as low-priority, and it's instantly discarded as soon as the memory is needed for something else. Because this data can be instantly discarded when necessary, there's no disadvantage to using the RAM for cache.

Empty RAM is useless. It's not any faster for the computer to write data to empty RAM, nor does empty RAM use less power. In fact, assuming you're launching a program that may already be present in your RAM's file cache, programs will load much faster when your RAM is used rather than when it's empty.

    • +1

It's cheaper to just upgrade yourself than it is to buy the next model up with more RAM.

      • I already have 16GB. I can't justify upgrading this system to 32GB.

    • RAM is a lot like your dick, 95% usage is better than 5% usage.

      • How about a female?

Is 95.0% used better than 5.0%?

  • +17

Wouldn't this be a better deal, for just a bit more?

      Do help!

      • +6

Specs wise the HP is clearly the better choice.

        HP has:
        Better GPU performance.
        Double the RAM.
        Double the storage.
        Faster screen refresh.

        Dell has:
        Better CPU performance.
        Faster USB ports.

        • +2

          Hp tends to die faster.

          • @rave75: Did you have both Dell and HP at the same time previously? What makes you think a HP would die faster?

            • +2

@HandsomeMonkey: Yes. 2 HP, both mobo died. You can try to own one and see. Someone in this post already bought one and had bsod. Obviously not all HP are bad, it is just that they have more failure rates in my personal experiences. Subpar brand like HP & Acer build quality (thermal, etc) are not so good imho.

Or is this better if you pay $50 and upgrade the RAM

        HP Victus 16", Ryzen 5600H(6c/12t), FHD 144Hz IPS, Radeon RX5500M, 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD $898 + Shipping ($0 C&C) @ Harvey Norman

This seems like an actually great budget deal.

    • +2

Now this is a great deal!

Kind of shocked that the usual price is only $1280 at a retailer.

    • +3

That HP is an amazing deal

    • +1

That is a really nice find on the HP Victus 16-d0224TX 16.1" FHD 144Hz Gaming Laptop (Intel i5) [RTX 3050 Ti].

If you can find gift card and/or membership discounts (health funds, insurance, etc) the above laptop specs are hard to beat at those price points.

It reminds me of when the Acer Nitro 5 laptops were going for cheap a few years ago sub-$1000.

    • Interesting how there's another HP for $1299 that's very similar https://www.jbhifi.com.au/products/hp-victus-16-1-fhd-144hz-…

    • +3

Bought this laptop via last hp deal, unfortunately had to refund it. Bsod whenever running moderate gaming, kinda beats the whole purpose. Did rverything hp support asked me to. So beware, i might just had a faulty unit tho

      • @HandsomeMonkey: Exhibit one.

    • Does this Victus Intel i5 have a thunderbolt port?

  • +4

Don't buy this. With an entry level gaming laptop you're essentially sacrificing build quality, battery life, screen quality, weight ect for the performance. This machine doesn't provide enough performance to justify these tradeoffs (These were entry level specs in 2019)

    • That is the laptop you need if you want to get ahead in the competitive gaming scene.

      • and I'm sure we all are fully aware of the joys of getting ahead

      • Why is this laptop better?

  • Apparently it's not easy to upgrade either ram on this. You have to irder special bracket from Dell.

  • +2
    • +7

lmao. Your laptop costs 3 times as much.

    • +1

Just becareful if it still has that rampant hinge issue.

  • Literally just bought the same laptop last month for $600 on ebay as a spare of my big and bulky G7.
With 8Gb ram, it can run Back4Blood and Outriders just fine. 256gb is enough to install 3 games with 50-70Gb each, I also install Genshin Impact in it.
It really is a light gaming laptop, I use it only when I need to travel and game, so no need to upgrade anything inside.

    • What was different in your $600 laptop

      • I think its the exact same laptop, just from different seller, and ebay plus discount. They have the box damaged though, bring the price a bit down

  • Specs are bit lightweight now for 2022 for a mainspec gaming laptop.

  • +2

This needs a lot of upgrading to be functional, and by then it doesn't compete with newer laptops on price. No idea how 60 people thought this was a good deal, but it's an absolute shocker lol.
