First post - been looking for a 4TB SSD for a while now and this came up on my Amazon. Decent model for SATA 3, especially compared to the typically cheaper and slower model from Crucial, the BX500. 4TB at less than $500, not the cheapest it's ever been but am certainly sure it's the cheapest I've seen for a while now.

Nice, but the write endurance is only 1000TBW, which is less than half of the 870 Evo's 2400TBW. Even the 870 QVO has a write endurance of 1440TBW.

Fair point. Looks like Scorptec have the QVO for $499. Not bad, not amazing either. I swear last year these used to be around the $400-450 mark. Prices on these seem to just keep creeping up.

Edit. BPC tech has it even cheaper. I got excited when i saw this deal. Should of done more research. Think I'll go with them.

Prices on these seem to just keep creeping up.

The MX500 are TLC so they will always cost more per gb than the Samsung QVO - a QLC drive - to produce, as there is less storage per mm² of memory. The MX500 is quite an old model, so it doesn't perform as well as the more modern TLC such as the 870 EVO.

The disadvantage of QLC is supposed to be
        1. Lower write performance with large files, when you overwhelm the drive's ability to shift old data to the 4th layer (i.e. when it's nearly full, or you are writing multiple GB files to it)
        And
        2. Less endurance, due to double writing required by 1.

However it appears the Samsung QVO has been engineered to be both similar in speed and endurance to competitor's TLC drives - at least on paper.

If it's around the same price, the MX500 would be my choice. Thanks OP

        • Thanks for the detail! You know your stuff. Much appreciated.

        • I was comparing the MX500, QVO and EVO earlier in detail for the 1TB models.

The variables that stood out most to me was that the QVO had 2gb of cache while the EVO and MX had 1gb (can't speak for the larger models).

The MX500 has ECC, while the others appeared to not.

Advertised paper speeds were too close to care.

  • I saw MX500 and thought FINALLY, then saw 4TB -_-

I've been trying to save $10-15 on the 500gb-1TB variant for my brother, lol.

When I built my Mum's PC, I managed to get her 1TB for around $100.

    • Hi Mitt,

What is the date that this offer or end of sale end on? July 1st will it be finished or can it still be had tomorrow on the 30th?

Also, what is the service like at shoppingexpress.com.au any feedback on their postage, support or return process if needed should it arise?

Would prefer a MX500 over a QVO imo!

  • Wow didn't know they came in this size. But what exactly are you doing that needs so much SSD storage?

    • +1

To fit large files on it but require faster than hard drive speed. And also have a bank account balance to suit.

People probably thought the same when a 4TB hard drive was considered large. And now it isn't. They would have thought what on Earth could any one ever need 4TB of storage for on a hard drive.

I bet in a few years a 4TB SSD will be considered standard on computers.

from what I understand it's just the OS and apps that really need ssd right? even for vid processing the hdd is faster than what the cpu can use?

        • +1

It would still be sluggish when scrubbing video. HDD can never get instant data access like an SSD can.
