You know what they say about tomatoes in big cans

    • +1

      No. Please explain.

      • +4

        They got big tomaToes

    • -2

Well I've tried two lots of tomatoes in big cans… the first was exceptionally narrow at the bottom end, the second made me feel like the clanger in the town hall bell, inferior and lost and wondering if I'd ever hit against the other side. So my sample size was inconclusive in judging whether what they say is true or not.

Btw… congrats to Blubber Barbara, and my sympathies to whoever got… uhm… "stumped" by Gail the Whale.

Thanks for sharing the link. Mutti is one of those brands I love for its quality. It's sad to find out about this. I would definetely read more to see what they've done to address this.

I see parallels with the fruit picking industry here…

        • Yes because australia doesn't like to import cheap labour while we complain about hight grocery prices…

4 year old news article… Is there anything more recent.

        4 year old news article

Regarding an incident 7 years ago

        • -2

I saw these yesterday, and this article only made me want to support them more.

      • +3

There’s a longer article from 2019, and then not a lot else; I’m not sure at what stage legal proceedings are at, but it’s enough for me to avoid the brand. Each to their own.

This was a release from April 2020…

Mutti is the first and only one, of the company leaders of the sector present in Southern Italy, to have
completely converted (in 2018) to mechanical harvesting, encompassing all the types of tomato that
are processed, and thus eradicating the risk of using illegal labour. Moreover, as of this season, the
company has also achieved its aim of collaborating in southern Italy exclusively with suppliers who have
gained certification of approved ethical labour standards. Furthermore, in line with the longstanding
company values and to reinforce the company commitment to opposing all forms of illegal acts or non-
ethical behaviour, also in 2019 the “Mutti Helpline” was launched, a company-run, real-time reporting
system accessible to the public that guarantees prompt intervention by the company and the utmost
          discretion for the caller.

Lol it's like reading a description of exactly what happens in Australia.

      • -5

"Muhammed’s day would start at 4am and he would work until 5pm handpicking tomatoes in the fierce heat of the southern Italian summer."

Yes, tomatoes grow in summer here too… so imagine the arrogance of those farmers expecting workers to pick them when they're ready to eat, rather than waiting until Autumn when they'll be easier and cooler to pick from rotting on the ground, lol.

The Guardian is such a purveyor of horse shit journalism. Do they expect farms be encased inside big air conditioned warehouses to keep workers (from the even more extreme Sudan supposedly) cool, or maybe they should buy small motorised air conditioned coolrooms the workers step outside for a few minutes to pick a handful, then run back inside for 15 minutes until the harvest is done!?

        • -4

Also worth noting that this is some random farm that supplies Mutti. Unless you want to boycott italian tomatoes altogether, this is just more clickbait journalism

    • -7

a bit hypocritical since you probably posted this comment on a device manufactured in similar conditions, if not worse.

      • +7

Steady on mate, I was just bringing it to peoples’ attention.
Yes, this was posted on an iPhone; and yes, I am aware of their historic use of metals that were mined by child slaves.

Thanks for sharing this man, very interesting. Good to know and to not support a company like this. Many people in the comments excusing it or defending. But imo thats inexcusable. They didnt seem to really care either. Their response seemed weak.

Some people who think they do, actually have no clue about what's going on in the world. This is about Italy, a country which has been besieged for years by an influx of economic migrants, who have often first traveled through several other countries before reaching one that will garner them sympathy and acceptance (check the guy's name - it's hardly of common Sudanese origin). Then after freeloading on the system abhor anything resembling honest work.

Those last two points pretty much guarantee the "employee" is going to be a constant source of strife. (The story, "The Boy Who Cried Wolf" comes to mind.) Add to these the fact the source is the Guardian, about a company that makes money, and migrants… which never lets journalism win over personal bias, and it makes me think I should go buy a few boxes of tomatoes.

Quality is still good though yeah?

    • +1

Almost as bad a Australian supermarket giants ripping of Australians

  • Will buy this tonight.

Although this is for tinned tomatoes, Mutti's jarred pasta sauce is only brand I've found a piece of glass lurking within it; fortunately it was me that got it and not the family.

If anyone is looking for a superior alternative try La Molisana.

    • Did you maybe open the jar with a knife under the cap? If not then this is concerning.

      • Just the old fashioned approach of using hands; one possibility could be the glass was compromised around the rim and had fallen in upon opening. I couldn't see any obvious defect however.

    Are the containers BPA free?

  • +1

I saw them yesterday in woolies and bought 2. Next time I'll remember to post

    • Yeah I saw them yesterday too but didn't realise they were cheap enough to post.

      • Pretty sure the general cost of vegies has a factor in this.

  • +1

bought 3 cans on the weekend. This is good.

  • +2

As the prices of Tomatoes have gone up, this is a good substitute, I'm getting some.

  • +1
