  • Can someone who owns this tell me if they are capable of 4k 120hz HDMI output? (not 3D rendering a game, just HDMI capabilities)
    or even 1080p 120hz?

      • +1

Bugger, my hopes and dreams of streaming 4k120 via ethernet to my living room are crushed

        • what's your app of choice for streaming? I currently switch between parsec and steam remote play but I couldn't imagine either supporting 4k120?

          • @v4moose: I want to use Moonlight. It natively supports 4k120 and works perfectly for me on my S22, so figure it would be easy to set up on another Android client for the TV, just need to wait for supporting hardware for the HDMI connection.
I imagine it would be loads less latency with a hardwired Ethernet connection.

            • +1

@CtrlAltSpoods: Technically you could push 4K 120Hz over HDMI 2.0 if you use 8-bit/SDR 4:2:0 chroma subsampling. Whether the Shield will let you do that is another matter. You can do it with a PC directly connected with HDMI 2.0 however by digging into advanced settings for your GPU.

I imagine it would be loads less latency with a hardwired Ethernet connection.

Definitely. I used to use my Shield for streaming over the network, but now I have a HDBaseT box connected to my PC and one to my LG C1 and get no noticeable latency since it it's point to point ethernet. I use it at 1080p 120Hz HDR and G-Sync/VRR works. At the distance I sit from the TV, the jump to 4K in some games isn't that noticeable anyway, plus it's easy to drive 1080p 120Hz than it is to do 4K 120Hz.

            • @CtrlAltSpoods: thanks mate

    • +2

For 4K 120hz output you'll need something with HDMI 2.1.

That rules out the Shield and I imagine just about most streaming devices. Here's hoping to a new model.

      • +1

        Apple TV 4K (2021) is HDMI 2.1

        • +1

Don’t get it for high quality streaming, you won’t get good sound from it (eg atmos from plex)

          • @stewface: You should have no issues with audio, it passes through PCM and LPCM, so zero loss of quality.

            • @snuke: It’s iOS locking down the plex app I think, nothing gets through to my Sonos.

              Netflix etc are fine though…

              • -1

@stewface: No, iOS isn't locking it down, it simply won't passthrough bitstream, but it will do as PCM & LPCM, so full audio passthrough, including Atmos.
Netflix is basic Dolby Digital Plus

        • +1

It's not fully compliant and doesn't support the full feature set so you won't get above 4k 60hz. It's because of the display port to hdmi converter chip it uses.

          • @Psigh: Interesting, the 120Hz info I saw when it launched must have been news articles making assumptions.
I see on Apples tech specs it has:

Support for up to 4K 60-fps HDR video output and Audio Return Channel (ARC or eARC) only. Requires HDCP when playing protected content and compatible TV or Receiver.

    • +2

Just curious but what content would you be streaming at 4k 120hz? Other then gaming or UI fluidity I don't know what other use case you would need that.

Poster - you can go back to harvey norman and get the price difference as per there best price guarantee policy

    • Thanks but I bought it at $248 today, yesterday it was showing $349 on their website so they must have changed the price today.

    Great deal!

…and for those keen, Foxtel finally updated their app a few days ago so it now works with the latest Shield updates (added support for Android 12 and Play Next):

Is the regular Nvidia Shield TV better than a Google TV with Chromecast?

Also anyone know if the Shield family will be getting Android 12?

    • +11

Just get the Pro. It is worth it for the responsiveness…

      • +6

I have both, there's not much difference if all you're doing is streaming videos.

    • The AI upscaling is good, if you have larger TV 75+

    • I was going to ask the same question, I've been using the Google TV with Chromecast for the last 18 months and I couldn't be happier and as I have an Xbox One X I guess I don't need a Nvidia Shield TV.

That being said, what would you recommend for someone starting fresh?

Is the Nvidia Shield TV Pro actually worth more than 3 times the price of the Google TV with Chromecast?

      • Is the Nvidia Shield TV Pro actually worth more than 3 times the price of the Google TV with Chromecast?

Unless you want to use it to emulate old games and/or stream your nvidia gpu powered PC games to it, no not really.

        Source: got both.

    • 'Is the regular Nvidia Shield TV better than a Google TV with Chromecast?' Much better, if you use it to its full capabilities.

For those with a 3D printer here is a nice little bracket to mount this behind your TV, out of sight…

    https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:3128316

    • Thanks. They look better than the ONE I saw on eBay. Anyone know what these cost to make?

      • Assuming you already have the printer, about 20-50 cents for the filament.

I made one and they are great…

I stuck it on the back of our tv using removable command strips.

        • Nah, haven’t got one. Call me pessimistic, but I figured it must cost a heap… but a cool hobby.

I’ll trawl gumtree, hoping for that one.

  • Is this the non Pro version?
    Edit: nevermind it’s both

the android 11 upgrade on this crippled my shield, didn't run well, the remote didn't always wake up the device, the plex server straight up died and didn't start up upon reboots, constant hangs and many more small annoying issues. If you get it and it runs like crap after the android 11 upgrade, it's 100% worth rolling it back to android 9 and it will run well..

    • Had similar problems. My 8bitdo controller compatability and retroarch on the nvidia shield sucks since the latest upgrade. Responsiveness in general has deteriorated and after reading a few forums it seemed that I wasn't alone with these problems - wish I'd never upgraded and have been waiting to see if a new firmware with some bug fixes resolves things. Thought about trying to rollback the firmware but seemed quite time consuming and fiddly to achieve or was I just looking at instructions that made it sound more complicated than it is?

      • +1

I'm fairly familiar with the custom rom/unlocking bootloader/rooting scene in android, but I would say.. yeh it's not exactly easy. you would need to install adb on your pc, turn on usb debugging, which turns the usb port 1 to OTG. using a usb-A to usb-A cable, plug it into your pc and run some commands in ADB to unlock the bootloader (which will wipe the device), then you need to flash the old android 9 images on there, then re-lock the bootloader and then set it up from scratch again.

        • Thanks for the response. As I thought, not that straightforward.

I'm sure I could follow it if I put the effort in but I think my worry is I'll go to all that effort and then the day after there will be a new firmware that fixes the issues anyway! Maybe one rainy bored weekend I might tackle it if no updates are forthcoming over the next few months.

          • @Wuggle: That is very true. I installed the 9.0.1 update and it pretty much turned my shield into a paperweight. Having said that, 9.0.2 has since come out, but I am absolutely terrified of "trying to update". I really can't be bothered to set up my entire plex server again so if it ain't broke, don't fix it..

      • Does the run-ahead setting in Retroarch work with this device?

      • Rats!

I just bought two 8bitdo controllers to use with Retroarch.

        • Your experience may vary…. I can still get my 8bitdo controller to work with the shield but life does not seem as smooth as it used to be back on an earlier firmware version. I suspect it will get back to normal eventually but if you look on the nvidia forums there is a multitude of bugs and issues noted since the update of the android version used. Not sure what firmware you'd get from old store stock but new buyers beware before just letting it update to the latest version.

    • Android 11 also broke Direct File Access for many apps due to increased permission requirements. As such, it has hurt Emby for direct file playback and others.
Took my Apple 4K out of storage yesterday to get 4K remuxes to work properly.

      • This is a concern, I'll need to check if I'm no Android 11. Haven't noticed any 4K issues, is this for files directly stored on attached media or via an EMBY server?

        • Emby server, but the issue is with this and potentially other apps, DFA requires permissions that can lead to Google putting a warning on the app, as such Emby chose to disable DFA unless you use a 3rd party player, such as VLC or Kodi. VLC doesn't match frame rates, so everything is played at 60fps, and Kodi constantly locks up for me.

  • Hmmmmm - I have the 2017 model. Works fine. No issues. OG Remote is crap. Bought a G20 off amazon but non-voice + it's starting to double click register..

Tried to buy JUST the new remote, the one I received was faulty of course and was the last in stock. Been waiting for stock since.

Wondering if I spend the ~250 on the new 4k pro vs just waiting for the remote to be in stock.. Minus remote cost i'd be paying ~180 for the new model for…. Uh… It's slightly faster and AI upscales better and a few new formats…?

    Worth it? Probably not…

    • I don't think it is, the remote while better than the V1 isn't anything special.

Also reviewers tested it for performance, it isn't any faster.

I might have a play with mine to see if I can notice the difference between upscaled and native content and report back later tonight.

    • Also got a 2017 model and the G20 remote. I think the new OS updates has bogged down the shield. Everything just seems slower, UI responsiveness and remote lagging. Have read comments in this deal, doesn't seem to be much of an improvement on the 4K so guess i'll be sticking with the 2017 for a while

    • Netflix supports Dolby Vision and Atmos on this, if that is something you want, otherwise…probably not?

  • +10

Surely this model is getting a bit long in the tooth now? I’m tempted but concerned a new model may drop shortly.

    • Are the specs out of date… or were they just WAY ahead of the curve?

  • Recently Xiaomi launched their new Android Tv box with 32gb ROM Mi Box 4S Max $110 but for china only right now in MIUI.

    https://item.jd.com/100024141991.html?

  • Wasn't aware of a "2021" model.

    • +3

There isn't one, nothing new since 2019, title is incorrect.

  • +1

Would be nice but still seems a bit too much. Is it much beefier and better experience than Google Tv w Chromecast?

    • +1

My dad has the Google chromecast TV. It's considerably slower in terms of navigation and even opening up some larger files from a NAS for example. It's fine but I'd pay the extra for the shield personally.. Depends who the audience is!

    • Considerably better on many fronts, but of course depends on your use case.

      • What is your use case?

  • What is the benefit of having this instead of a Fire Stick TV 4K?

    • +1

The AI upscaling is nice if you have a use for it.

  • I wonder if Nvidia are going to release an updated version in the next few years? I've no immediate need of a Shield TV and I'd rather wait for one that can do 120 Hz or even some kind of VRR when streaming games from PC.

    • +1

I wonder if Nvidia are going to release an updated version in the next few years?

      It's already overdue.

    • +1

When the Switch 2 comes out is when you'll see an updated version most likely, since they'll use the same processor.

  • Can you run iptv on this ? Which app is best for iptv ?

    • +4

      yes you can.

      I use Tivimate

      • Tivimate is very good and use it on my CCWGTV.

      • is it paid, if yes then how much is it ? are channels sluggish and which countries are covered mostly ?

      • Another IPTV+Tivimate user, also OTT navigator is another alternative

    • +1

I use Kodi with the Simple IPTV client.

      • and what does that mean ? i am a nerd in this iptv thing but very much interested to get one.

        • kodi is the app.

In the app, install and configure the IPTV client.

          • @jv: Do you need to pay for IPTV Client ?

            • +1

              @ChipsChicky: No, all free.

The Simple IPTV client is easy to install from within the Kodi app

Lots of guides on how to do it

  • +1

Excellent devices however I'm finding it hard to justify when I have a TV with Android OS.

    • +2

Same position, but I justify them.

      Much nicer to use.

    • My TV is from 2009 so easily justifiable for my household esp now that my PS3 isn't set up.

  • +1

The fire stick 4K is great value. Got it for $59 plus $20 gift card last month.
With the NVIDIA Shield TV Pro you can run Plex of a usb harddisk, but if you already have Plex server, fire stick is OK.

    • +7

Comparing Apples with Oranges. The Nvidia Shield is miles ahead.

      • +1

        Why is it miles better?
        Is it 4x better?
I have both, along with Apple TV 4K ($150 JB price error)
For my use case, they all do the same job fine.

        • I agree, most people will not benefit from NVIDIA Shield TV.

    • +1

Minor correction: the deal you got was for the 4K Max which has faster CPU, GPU and more RAM.

      • Thanks, otherwise he would have thought that he has firestick 4k for the rest off his life.

  • +1

thanks, bought the pro for Dolby Vision

    • They both have Dolby Vision

  • Would this make my Netflix and plex 1080p streams look better on my 4k TV?

    • possibly. it depends what you are using now.

      • Streaming via the firestick Max.
Basically Netflix and plex is about it

        • I find most of the free-to-air catch up apps are way more responsive on the Nvidia Shield Pro.

    • +1

Yes, it's AI upscaling makes a big difference for me. But I have AI upscaling on my AMP too.

  • Do either of these run a Plex server decently ?

    • +1

The Pro version has it pre-loaded.
Just point it at your file store and you're good to go.

      • Cool. Thanks. Can file store be a USB HDD ? Just carked the power supply on my media server. Thinking of taking out the HDD and sticking into a caddy. Formatted as XFS. I wonder if the Nvidia will be able to read it. Could be the quickest way of getting it going again. Alternatively to replace the power supply, but may have fried other componentry - or build one using a RPi 3 Model B I've had lying around for about 6 years. Any suggestions? $248 may be too much to pay for my laziness - unless it can also be done fairly easily on the $158 version. Don't really have another need for it - have a Google TV and 2 Xiaomi boxes which do my streaming just fine.

    • Not in my experience. I tried using my 2019 Shield TV Pro as my plex server instead of my Synology NAS and it was just no good. The server constantly crashed even while just using the web UI to set things up. Basically couldn't go 5 mins without crashing and needing a manual restart. Factory reset it and set it back up 2 more times, same thing. It might be different if you're plugging a HDD with all your content directly into the Shield though - mine was connecting to the 40TB NAS over my network (both wired).

There's a reason it's the only android device with Plex Server capabilities.

  • I am using an old laptop(i7-2630QM 4 x 2 - 2.9 GHz and 8GB RAM) as the Plex server and a Firestick 4k max as the Plex client.
Would the pro be a better setup in this use case?
At the moment I find it is generally OK to stream 1080p videos but it is buffering a lot when stream 4k media.

  • I swear these used to be $250 normal price or am I tripping.

Anyway, love mine, can't live without it but sometimes I wish it had proper frame matching

    • +5

      you are tripping.

      • You are correct

    • +1

Trippin, older models like 2017 I bought around that price, then they made the newer 'stick' model that same ~250 price, and increased the pro price by ~100.

TBH Stick model should always be around the ~150 mark and Pro maybe 250-300..

      • Ah yes that's right

  • No pickup in Brisbane anywhere?

  • +7

PS: The non-pro has been matched by Amazon AU - $158 Delivered

    • Thankyou, anything to not pay Harvey Norman a single cent. Wish they'd match the price for the pro model too
