Same resolution as an inspiron I bought 5 years ago….

also same as my $399 HP…

Actually less pixels than the Dell Inspiron 8000 15" 1400x1050 which I bought back in March 2001 — more than 11 years ago!

        • My thoughts too, so sad. Somehow display resolution seems to be going backwards. My guess it's something that the Average Joe doesn't really know to ask about and hence it's where all the manufacturers skimp on. I am really counting on Apple here to bring something new to the marketplace!

        • Both 15.6" @ 1366x768 and 22" @ 1920x1080 are around 100 DPI/PPI. I guess that's where the bulk of the LCD panels are manufactured.

        • Yep, exactly. Personally I think it's a good dot pitch for general use. Yes, for gaming or movies you'd probably want higher, but even with the 7730M this still isn't really a gaming laptop.

    • I just dont get it. Why are these low resolutions so popular? I am lugging around a Toshiba Qosmio 18.4" gaming for its 1920x1080 resolution. I dont need the performance at all, but do need the screen res.
I wish I could find a 15" with 1920 res and internal WWAN for ~$1000.

Why are these low resolutions so popular?

Windows has a bitmapped GUI shell, not vector and hence scale disproportionately - fonts are can be enlarged (utilising smaller pixels to improve rendering) but icons and chrome remain small. Windows was designed for fixed 96 dpi - that's when fonts and graphics look right and since most people's eyesight isn't great at this fixed value the UI becomes too small when screens have a higher dpi - people want it proportionately larger. 15.6" at 1366x768 is about right, size-wise.
OSX is in same boat, but now Apple's rumoured to be bringing out higher dpi screens - hopefully they'll introduce vector-based GUI shell instead of just increasing the resolution by an integer value as they did with new iPad.
If your eyesight is great, higher resolution (at default 96 dpi) means more screen real-estate - a boon. With software that does its own rendering like Adobe reader, quality of rendering is great too. I do a lot of PDF reading and my 1920x1080 on 15.6" is super.

      • I think that is too small for most people. At 1080p res, I want at least 23 inch screens. I don't like to modify DPI in windows as it messes up some applications that are badly coded. I wouldn't mind a 15" 1600x900 though.

  • Not bad, but seems not as good as the Lenovo deal posted before: http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/70448

  • not bad, i think its just as good as the lenovo deal i posted before, better specs but also more expensive. if this was under 800 i would be all over this. but a plus anyway.

  • If you're a founder to Starthere you can get another $50+ in cashback

My starthere cash backs never register…for Dell or Vodafone. This is for 3 separate transactions too.

      • Try buckscoop instead. I haven't tried Dell yet but all my other transactions get paid unlike Starthere (MBC)

        • I'll try that, thanks. Kinda lost faith in Starthere. Even though all my transactions worked perfectly on MBC.

  • Not bad, pity about the crappy screen, though. A cellphone a quarter of the size now almost has the same resolution.

  • it was originally 999.. dell jacked up the price to 1099 for this upto 30% sale =\

  • Hi Guys

I am in market for Dell XPS. They have just listed XPS 15 for $1002.00 after 40% discount, with i7, 8GB Ram & 1TB HDD. Is it a good deal or should i wait for further sales in the next few weeks? Also, would i be able to get 5% Cashback from Buckscoop? Here is the link, much appreciated.

  • Pretty good when you look at what you get for the price I think. But I saw one in store at jb hifi and it isn't a very nice looking laptop, really cheap looking, in my eyes.

    • Are you sure it was the SE and not the normal 15R? Because most people on Whirlpool have been raving about the build quality as it is a aluminium outer shell.

If you connect the notebook to an external monitor, a 24"or 30", you'll be able to run at a much higher resolution? (1920x1080).

Also, I have to replace an HP notebook which is about 18 months old and its specs are pretty much the same as the above Dell, but it's basically useless because it overheats massively. Do these Dells perform well, they don't have overheating issues?

  • Bought one this afternoon for my sister. Was originally going to buy the $1299 and use 8% off coupon but decided to save $$ and go for this one. Very happy, now just to wait for it to get delivered!

  • This model is now $899 instead of $890
