Did you buy one? I think it would look good on you.

      • +4

        the thickness would suit him

        • +2

          needs bold indices

  • +2

i know jomw said he doesnt reckon green suits this watch but i think its a banger from the photos/video haha

    • +1

I got a green one a couple of deals ago and I definitely rate the watch, but the green is nowhere near as vibrant as the pics.

    • +1

Can't go Wrong with the black one

  • +1

I've been wearing one of these SD1970's for several weeks now. I've been very impressed by it. What you get for your money is very impressive. No issues with it at all, which is something I couldn't say for two Seiko watches I purchased recently (Prospex I got was so bad, I had to send it back).

  • +2

Thanks for the recommendation earlier, spec wise it’s crazy good value, screw down crown and sapphire. Am very tempted to give this a go actually. Also, I noticed that they have $3 off $30 spend too at the moment, comes down to $6 discount, handy to reduce the GST charge..

    • +1

Thanks updated the price, even cheaper than I initially thought!
Plus CR takes another 5% off.

  • +3

I've had one of these since March of last year and it's held up quite well. Haven't had as much wrist time since end of lock down - easily gets the most attention of my collection and saying "it's a steeldive" feels a little shame.

    • +5

Bruh if someone told me it’s a steeldive I’d say tell me more? Looks great?!

      • +2

Personally I have the San Martin SN004 and despite it being impeccably made I find it difficult to wear knowing it's an unoriginal design. If someone notices it looks a bit like a Tudor or Rolex I gulp in shame, and therefore, never wear it.

And of course I am aware that even the most reputable manufacturers use design queues from others, but this Steeldive borders the line of a fake Seiko.

        • more stuff to worry about.. these aren't a blatant knock off like all the rolex sub copies.

plenty of other good brands like Oris & Tissot anyway, nice to have a variety

        • +2

I'd be happy as a pig in pooh to wear it, and just not care at all what other folk think, if indeed they cared. I can't think of anyone I know who would care. There are too many real things to worry about. Autos aren't my thing, but I like the design, the sapphire crystal, screw down crown and crown guards. I also like the offset crown - you can wear it on left wrist

  • How much are these usually? In the mood but should save pennies…

    • +1

nah just do it mate u deserve it. EOFY bonus for yourself.

  • +3

this is a fantastic watch - the only negative is that you will stop wearing your other watches cos they are not as good - thanks to watcherd for putting me onto it - i love it

    • +4

Yep I wear mine all the time. Love the lume too.

    • Agree - I got the green face with logo and steel strap last time this came up. Its not a daily wear but I love wearing it for weekends.

  • +2

Highly recommended, got one on the 11/11 sale (i think) when cash rewards also had 20%, so was A$100 all up.
Would easily pay more, one of my fav watches including some expensive ones.
Great lume, legibility, specs, water resistance & overall quality.

It doesn't wear big thanks to the short lug-lug, I do wear it tighter though for the weight and it's not an issue

  • +3

I always feel fundamentally weird looking at watches that are obvious design rip-offs of major brands. And not just "homages," but straight up 1:1 copies.

    • +2

Seiko are selling the movements to Steeldive so they don't care.

Nobody on Ozbargain is posting copies because it isn't allowed.

      • +6

Whether or not Seiko care is kinda irrelevant to how I feel about it.

        • +2

My point is why would you care if Seiko don't? The word on the street is the movements they sell to other brands has better quality control too.

          • +7

@WatchNerd: Because I don't want to wear a watch that I know is a rip-off of another watch's design. I'm not judging anyone who buys one of these, but I don't want one for myself.

Also, do you know that Seiko are selling directly to these guys? I have my doubts that Steeldive have gone to Seiko and gone "we want to make cheap direct copies of some of your most iconic watches" and got seiko's blessing.

            • +4

@TheRealCJ: There's barely 10 different watch designs. Nearly everything else is a riff off one of them.

    • +5

Agree. I know seiko needs to lift their game but the last thing I want is a pretend seiko of all things. Would rather buy a cheapo brand which has the cojones to innovate.

      • +7

This exactly. If Steeldive were making decent watches of their own design, I'd be behind them 100% of the way.

        • It's easier for the brand to sell an iconic design than an original design. As seen from all the aliexpress brands.

In saying that, I have some San Martin watches which are homages and the quality and finishing is excellent for the price! Better than the Seiko I buy at those prices.

      • +1

San Martin now have original designs and excellent quality, so there's an obvious awareness of the push in the community for quality manufacturing + branded movements + china build and pricing, therefore I'd imagine more will come down the pipeline

    • These aren't just ripoffs, and many others aren't either.

You probably aren't aware that Seiko weren't making these for a long time, so there is less frustration if it's a vintage model that you can't buy anyway mate.

        • Buy that then, put your money where your mouth is.

I did notice and said they have only just started making them again, probably due to the popularity of the steeldive. 2k RRP seemed a bit too steep so I'm more than happy with mine champ.

          What would you recommend.

          • -5

@G-rig: What I want to know is why you're being so deeply aggressive. I stated I don't care if you want to buy this, so stop getting your nose in a sling.

            • +3

@TheRealCJ: Not worried what you think, I've had mine for ages. Was going to ask what you'd recommend.

You could buy 10-12 of these for the same price as the one you linked and the Seiko NH35 movement is better than the movement in most of your $600 seikos with old movements.

Would I buy any old homage or 'knock off'? No , but it pays to do the research.

      • Pretty cool those 55th anniversary Seiko dive watches, released Nov 2020.

  • +1

I have one of these, I love it. One thing I have noticed this week is that the bezel has gotten very stiff and is now almost impossible to turn.

    • The adult fidget

    • +1

A tight one is better than a loose one.

  • I love mine as well.

  • Hey - sorry for the unrelated comment but I have lost my Citizen eco-drive BM8180 somewhere and I think it will turn up again one day but it's been gone for properly a long time.

Can anyone recommend me something that's basically the same but a bit different to replace it with? The eco-drive is a great feature but somewhat negotiable. Size isn't really negotiable, I have lil wrists. Date display and waterproof ish is essential. Non-steel band pls

    Cheers

    • There is the Seiko SNK809, but that isn't particularly waterproof. Ticks all the other boxes though

    • +1

There is a Seiko Auto 38mm on sale at the moment. See the description under Other Watch Deals.

      • -2

ah auto is no good for me, that's why i like the eco-drive.

    • -1
      • +1

        A $600 watch to replace a $200 one

        • And it’ll cut your wrist off too

        • screw the grocery bill, i'm movin up in the world boys.

        • How dare i

      • i should have included an upper cost limit… $600 is definitely not my budget lol. absolute max would be 200 but i would like it to be more on the 100 side.

        • +1

Lookup tandorio watches on AliExpress. They sell a few sub-40mm watches with Seiko movements.

    • +1
      • thanks, but the diver watch dial is not my thing and a bit too much colour on the face for me.

    • +2

Only one thing to replace an Eco-Drive with is another Eco-Drive (39mm)…
      https://starbuy.com.au/citizen-eco-drive-mens-watch-at0200-0…

      • now we're talkin!

too many dials tho. what do people do with all these dials?!

        • +1

It's a Chronograph watch (stop watch and time)..

          • @cashie: oh i know i was just pulling your leg. i just have no use for a chronograph - the extra dials would just add three seconds to the time it takes me to process what time it is lmao

    • I have a similar design but in a Promaster (BM6401-58E) with metal band. Best watch I have ever had.

I like the numerical digits on the face but this design is almost impossible to buy now from Citizen.

    • I know you said same same but different with a budget of $200~

Could/would you replace it with the same?

      https://starbuy.com.au/citizen-eco-drive-mens-watch-bm8180-0…

      • I recently got a Hamilton Khaki field
Some of the alternatives for less coin look like they could fit the bill including:
        - Seiko 5 canvas
        - Timex Expedition scout

All this style is great for swapping different bands etc, mostly natos

        • the quality of the timex's looks pretty bad just from a quick glance tbh…

i like the seiko 5s but they're automatic, i really don't want an automatic.

            • @G-rig: … that’s the watch I already have that I lost that i linked in my initial comment 😂

              Now you’re just being cruel

              • @jrowls: Yeah I realised that but it came up in a search so Sounds like you should get another one.

              • @jrowls: Maybe an ediface or a G-Shock?

          • @jrowls: why not - they're great, and doesn't matter about extreme accuracy if you have a few watches in rotation, takes 15s-30s to set (quicker without day/date), how long do people watch TV for a day. I've found the quartz get a bit more out of time than you'd expect anyway, when you can set an auto precisely on the day. Even the digital clock in my 2007 subaru keeps better time than the G-shocks.

            • @G-rig: @G-rig 2007 Subaru! I miss my 07 Subaru :(

I take your point about automatic watches really not being that difficult but I have adhd and a lot of my life is about making things easy - having an item that requires maintenance (even simple and quick maintenance) is an extra barrier I really really don’t need, ya know? Same reason I don’t want a smart watch or fifteen other smart devices that need charging

              • +1

@jrowls: Understand mate, it is another thing to do before heading out etc, some people like them some don't. I wouldn't mind the minimalist approach and just have one watch but have ended up gathering more than a few.

Also not interested at all in Smart watches but keep a Fitbit on all the time and at least that lasts 7 days.

      • oh i definitely could, but i think it will turn up again at some point. i don't think i lost it like, on a train or in the city or something. i'm sure it's in my house or car or a bag. ergo i would like something that's different enough that there's a point to having both lmao.

        • Deal of the day for Prime Members: SEIKO Men's SNK805 SEIKO 5 Automatic Stainless Steel Watch with Green Canvas, Green, 37 mm, casual https://amzn.asia/d/1b1ruBe

  • Very tempted… not sure if I should pull the trigger!

    • Do it

      • +1

Yeah that's all I needed to hear. Thanks, copped! lmao

  • Which band are people choosing?

    • apparently bracelet is super uncomfortable and not the best made. watch/read the reviews. they're good.

      • The bracelet is ok… but you can tell all the money went into the watch itself. Which is fine for its price point. I replaced the stamped fold over clasp with a milled clasp from Aliexpress for $15 shipped, a decent improvement.

        • May look at the clasp idea , got a big one from them sitting around (brought the Wrong size but looks like good quality for 6-8$).

I find the bracelet fine overall too. Signed clasp is fine - probably similar to average seiko quality.
Rubber strap good option to have anyway depending what feel like.

        • These are the clasps that Jody recommended back a while ago. Closer to $10 now. $5.40 shipping, not free like I was expecting.

For some dumb reason I ordered a 20mm but the Steeldive looks like it's a 18mm.
          good quality.

          https://www.aliexpress.com/item/4000418482880.html?spm=a2g0o…

          • @G-rig:

            Band width - 20mm

            That is probably why.

            • @mit: Yeah rookie error the first time but won't make that mistake again

    • black rubber band with the round holes in it for me

  • +1

    $107.41 with 2.20aud store coupon. Thanks @WatchNerd

  • Great watch, bought one in black last time they were ~$110. Watch is well finished and lume is super bright, more so than my other watches.

Only downside I can think of, is the power reserve seems a little low compared to my SNK809… but I wear the Seiko at work, so it's probably just getting wound more.

I'd test my theory but the Steeldive is too nice to get all banged up at work imo.

  • What are some of the 3rd party bands people are using/recommending for these?

  • my one has a stuck date wheel…

    • +1

When did you get it, contact the seller?
Assume turning it the right way on the first pull out (opposite way to setting the time on the second pull out of the crown).

    • -2

Second one posting here with some serious problems with these supposed amazing quality watches.

      • What happened

        • Actually…..sigh…..I'm a idiot and spun the crown the wrong way like G-rig said…… :( Well, I have a nice watch lol……..

P.S I own over 20+ watches so…. but only three autos so….. lol

          • +1

@Forfiet: Great, no issues then.. happens, ha :)

    • +1

Oh noes to all the lovely people above this

      • At the moment there is US $3.00 off every US $30.00 spent so whether or not that's still available tomorrow is yet to be seen.

  • Do it. I have the green one and it is a banger. Best value watch out there, plus it looks amazing

  • I've checked and the shop for the good quality clasps is on the list for the 20% cashback, good to order after 7pm :). 18mm. May help cover the postage.
