Not that it's the best comparison (cause they are owned by the same people) but Optus' recent plan adjustment saw the data inclusions drop. I was kind of shocked to see Virgin offer MORE data; when Optus so recently dropped theirs, I thought virgin would follow suit…

    • Loving that neg.

I'm pointing out that they decreased the internet quota before increasing it.

Everything I said was factual. Dont see how its possible to legitimately neg it.

Wondering if that person will vote +ve on the next Harvey Norman sale when they jack up the price before offering a discount? Practically speaking, it's the same thing.

    • +1

Entitled to your opinion, but you are somewhat incorrect in some areas.

If I'm right, you're on an older plan called Smart Cap or something like that. So a different family of plans to begin with. But the other thing you miss is that while data went down, call credit increased. Can't have everything… on the lower price points virgin focus on call credit, while higher up u get more data and unlimited text to any network; but credit is less (Virgin's Fair Go 49 includes $400 credit for example)

You are comparing an old, now non existent plan to something current. Apples and Oranges baby. It's impossible to make a plan that is going to suit EVERYBODY. But with the increased data in these Big Plans now… they seem to be a good option for the majority.

You say the price is a failure… if you have something better that is gonna get you a phone and these inclusions at these price points… or a BYO offer that gives you the same inclusions but with an additional $10 off… Then please don't hold back… share.

And finally, you complain about difficulty in getting an offer designed for acquiring new customers as an existing customer. Seems to me Virgin have done pretty well by you by giving u the means to get that discount regardless…

Everyone is entitled to an opinion though. But I fail to see how this isn't an impressive offer at the price point it's at…

      • +2

Yeah, it was the era of smart caps.

The name of the plan doesnt make a difference though. If Credit/Data amounts are comparable, then you can compare price. Within reason. Obviously I have a bit more data, a bit less talk. But I personally do consider it comparable.

Also, I'm not complaining about their customer service. It was an indication that people might get lucky by trying. It doesnt hurt to ask. But anything complicated carries some risk of not working out, regardless of what the first customer service person says.

I did put in an alternative offer: LiveConnected. But I edited that in later. You may not have seen it. LiveConnected doesnt include a phone. As I said the virgin plan with a phone was acceptable value, I dont think I need to provide an alternative to that.

I think making my comment but not negging was a suitable way of presenting my perspective on this deal.

        • Smart Caps were amazing.

I get your points, they are somewhat valid, you presented well and i appreciate that you didn't neg. But while they are comparable on some level, it is still 2 different plans.

Times change. Needs change. Credit went up, data went down. It's a slippery slope where u can't balance everything perfectly.

My point is, you said this isn't impressive and the price is a failure. Excluding offers provided by on-net telcos like LiveConnected or TPG or whoever, an offer like this, at this low price point from one of the major telcos is damn impressive…

  • Just spoke to 2 different people on the Virgin Team and was told that i am NOT eligible to this promotions as i am an existing customer on the Big PLAN 29 :((

    • Damn - sounds like the hammer has come down!

    • Strange, I'd ring again I got mine changed over.

  • look like i missed out, they said that they received a memo saying that customer who is still on contract with those plans are not eligible to receive the bonus data

    • Damn… I'll adjust the post AGIAN lol

    • +1

Ah, I'm on BYO Big Plan 29. So I'm not on contract, which is different to your situation. Sorry to hear they won't do the same for people on contract :S

  • +3

Just successfully got the data, was on the $29 Big Plan with a BYO phone, so it came down to $19, but I was paying an extra $10 a month for 1Gb of data. Called the loyalty team and they had no issues with switching me over and cancelling the extra 1Gb, so I'm now paying $19 for 2.25Gb as opposed to $29 for 1.25Gb.
    Great deal thanks OP!

    • +3

I did exactly this too. Thanks OP!

    • +1

And I did exactly this too too.

Anyone else been able to increase it after the memos been out?

  • +2

Thanks to the OP for the heads up on this plan :)

Thought I'd ring the Loyalty Department and try my considerable charms on them. I have been politely told that Sydney have told the operators they are currently unable to change the plans for existing customers. She used the term "experiencing difficulties" (ozbargained?) and to try again tomorrow. They may have further news by then. So not an outright no, but not too promising either

    • Yup just gotta be polite, ring a few times, get different operators. Someone will crack eventually lol.

  • Awesome deal, just rang and upgraded my BYO phone $29 Big Plan, no problems. $19 a month…..

  • +1

Checked my virgin mobile account tonight. Got upgraded to 2.5 Gb allowance which was supposed to be for $39 plan, I am still on $29 Big Plan. Excellente!

The only concern is that they said that I used excess 129Mb data from previous cycle and I need to pay $264.13!! But then it said that if you recently changed your plan then your actual excess data usage may be different from what is shown.

So I suggest anyone who got upgraded to check their next bill carefully.

    • Sounds like it was calculated pro rata.

    • Also have this problem. Mine shows 123 Mb. If it is not gone by the end of the month will definitely dispute and take it to the TIO. Seems like the whole amount of data I used for the billing cycle up to the change over was put into excess.

    • All good. Everything reset to normal. No excess usage charges :)

  • +2

edisonAU - this happened to me as well. It must be an error in the system.

I upgraded from a previous $29 plan to this Big Plan $29 and basically all my data from the old plan went straight into 'excess data' with this new plan.

It's weird I have been stung with 129mb excess data as well? I called them just now and the customer service was not helpful (they never are, Virgin customer service is one of the worst I have ever experienced). I will wait for the next bill to come and if it shows any excess data I will dispute it. I have already paid too much in excess data with virgin!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • virgin's apn is known congested, isn't it?
I think liveconnected has better BYO plan

    • Read previous comments…

  • Did Virgin allow hotspot ? Since I am using iPhone with Woolsworth mobile, the hotspot function is disabled whenI insert the SIM…..
    Any idea??

    • Hotspot works with my Virgin mobile…

    • I asked them and they said you could tether. Huge bonus! some companies are stingy not allowing you to do it.

  • -4

I tried to upgrade my Big Cap 29 to Big plan 29 for the 2gb. Nice argument changing the word cap to plan and refusing my request. They are obviously getting hammered with this type of calls and have become very rude. The Big Cap subscribers who requested the change early got lucky.

As soon as contract is up we are switching to a different telco.

    • +1

I've got a whim back from the virgin rep in WP with "you're in your commitment period, you'd have to break it to be upgraded to this plan". [trying couldn't hurt]
Looks like because we're in a contract, we're in the commitment period.
I'm pretty sure all those who are upgrading are on the BYO phone, so they're actually not in a contract at all.
Not sure what you're angry about, you signed it at the start of the contract that you agreed, for 12 or 24 months that you would be paying a set price for a set amount of call allowance and data per month.
For those who are on BYO plan, they're not actually on a contract at all, they can leave anytime.
Though I wish it was like TPG, where you can downgrade your plan outside of a contract once every x days, or upgrade your plan anytime (pay more per month) for free, where the "upgraded" plan could be of the same value (i.e. same one you're using now, but with more data).
I'm saying you shouldn't be angry at all about this offer that has been posted.

      • I was lucky that whilst I am still on contract they upgraded me for free. Now I am listening overseas radio using TuneIn Radio Pro using my new 2.5Gb allowance, and will install Spotify as well, just to use up the allowance :)

        • I was lucky that whilst I am still on contract they upgraded me for free.

          You're very lucky indeed :|
How many months left on the contract?

        • 9 months left.

        • I was lucky also. I am still in contract for another six month and did not bring a phone to the plan.

      • Well I'm angry because after holding off I finally re-signed last month and added a data pack just to get a basic amount of data and then they release this - where is the love for existing customers?

Its like buying a $400 knife set and finding the next day its 50% off!
Its like buying a car and the following week they release a promo with a free $8k of extras!

I don't think anyone is upset about the offer, they are just upset as current loyal customers they shafted.

        • I think the people who signed up for the 'fair go' plans because they are, (and I quote), "big on data" are entitled to feel somewhat cheated……

Have been a loyal virgin customer for many years, but they are really starting to tick me off…

      • Posted in wrong place. See my post below.

      • Neg all you want. But if you just change the name of the plan from Big Cap 29 to Big Plan 29 and add 2gb to the new plan. I say that is spitting to the face of existing customers

        • +2

It's been called Big Plan for a while now mate.., they didn't change the name to "Plan" just to bump up the data and screw over existing customers. Prettier sure government decided "Cap" is misleading a but back so the telcos had to change…

        • You are absolutely correct Chux, my mistake.

They did not need to use word changes to screw over existing customers. Even fair go customers are getting the big finger with this.

  • for you guys on liveconnected, i just switched, does anyone know what flash data really is ?

  • i just got my 2 byo bigplan 29 plans upgraded, im on a month to month contract at $19/month, $450 call cap to be used locally or internationally.

very happy. thanks for the posting.

  • to kumquat-good on you. I tried to talk to 3 different person but could not convinced them to change my plan(i am still on contract with them)
Has anyone else that is on the 29 Big Plan been able to get the bonus data? please share with us if u suceed.

    • We're 20 months into a $29 cap contract. With that contract we got a Nokia phone, then while walking along the beach on Xmas day, my Wife was carrying the phone in her shorts when a rogue wave soaked her to the waist. Electronics + seawater doesn't work. We resorted to using an earlier phone temporarily until we saw a good deal on a Motorola Atrix. I rang the virgin loyalty team today and told the story and how when the contract ends in August, we'll be seriously looking at TPG or Live-connected to save money.

All Virgin offered was an upgrade to the $39 plan - which was a non-starter. We only use around $150 of the $450 monthly cap, I'd imagine that'd put us in the first division of customers alone. Anyhow I indicated that If I waited until Aug and their data allowance special had gone then I'd walk away and not look back with the lack of loyalty they've shown me. Then she put me back hold with the crap music before offering me with what became the deal-breaker. Reduce the normal $64 early termination fee to $34 and then release me from the remaining 4 months of the contract. Put me on the new $29 plan, but as I'll be BYO that reduces to $19. A very happy vegemite now. Virgin rewarded loyalty but they had to be nudged a bit.

      • I would have taken that kind of offer. But virgin just shut the door down with a rude rep on the other side of the phone.

  • +2

I am on big plan 29. No dice.Looks like I have am stuck with only paltry 250 mb of data. 11 months left in the contract.

    • I'm paying $39 (easy caps) now for Galaxy S with $300 credit and 300MB data…still 6 months to go. I remember not long after I got in a contract, they released big plans and then gave that phone for free or $5 or something.

  • +1

I am on Big Plan $29 contracted for another 6 months. The Virgin Consultant I spoke to said she will call me back tomorrow to advise me if I am eligible for the upgrade to the higher data allowance.

    Not holding my breath!

  • When telcos like TPG and Optus and Telstra introduce the same $ plan with more bandwith or data allowance they offer it to existing customers as well. So this is definitely not standard practice in the industry shafting your existing user base.

  • Nice. Just wander that is this a 2 year contract?

  • And I heard virgin is using the telstra network, so that means signal is not a problem.

    • The only people who've been using the Telstra network is Telstra themselves, though I have read that might change. Virgin use the Optus network and use different frequencies to Telstra. With that being the case the sims issued by the two companies are incompatible frequency wise.

      • Lycamobile uses Telstra (it may only be their 2G network though)

        @NGSX
Virgin is on Optus network, been well known for a while.

    GOOD NEWS EVERYONE !

Here's the email Whirlpool user "krusty32" got from Virgin:

We're glad to inform you that the new Big Plan $29 with 2.25 GB of included data is also available for existing Members. We simply need to change your plan from the old to the new Big Plan $29.

Please note, Virgin Mobile changes plans on the spot which means that you'll be charged pro-rata for both your old and your new plans for that billing month. This proportional billing will affect both your minimum spend and included talk & text for each plan during this changeover month. In the following months, you'll pay the normal minimum spend and receive the normal included talk & text as per your new plan.

  • So at least there are still hope, i will email them. Thank you

  • Going of topic - may probably be suitable for forum, not sure.

After buying Samsung Galaxy SII, I am also looking for a no contract or prepaid service.

    My short list is:

    1. Amaysim - Prepaid Pay As You Go $15 recharge for 90 days validity + $99.99 for 10 GB data (valid 365 days)
    2. Woolworths - $29 per recharge 45 days validity(less 10% for everyday rewards card - free to joing) = $26.10 - which works out to $17.40 per 30 days - 5GB data and $250 to Optus and $250 to any network.

    3. Liveconnected - I have no idea about - any comments, reveiews suggestions would be great.

    4. Virgin - BYO $19 as this offer

I have three phones, with most calling amongst each other and some data use. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

    Cheers.

    • +1

If you are going to connect all 3 phones on the same offer… Then I think it's hard to pass up the offer here from virgin. With the unlimited calls and text Virgin-to-Virgin included you can do as much as u want between your mobiles and also anyone else you may know that's on Virgin. That advantage plus 2.25gb per month for $19 a pop is pretty good IMO.

My contract with Optus runs out end of July so I've got fingers crossed that Virgin extend this bonus data offer by at least a month so I can get in on the action too!

      • Spal you may qualify for a further $5 off your monthly bill with Virgin, take more than one service from them and qualify for the discount. I can't say if that's for telephony & broadband only or multiple phone accounts.

@Chux If I were you, I'd get in now as it's likely that Virgin would in your case waive the early termination penalty with so little time remaining on your contract. See my post a foot or so above, where I negotiated myself a sweet deal and my contract went until late September.

        • Thank you. I should call Virgin today. If I am not happy with their network I could always try something else.

        • I'm on Optus at the moment though… Don't think they'll waive the payout for me to jump ship to someone else… :P

        • The Loyalty team operative I spoke to was satisfied that I was happy with Virgin and I am. The argument I used was that if they didn't cut me a deal and then I was to find the data special deal hadn't been extended or was greatly scaled back in September, then I'd be free to go to Live Connected, TPG or whoever. I think the Virgin Rep was sufficiently bright to see my logic. Anyhow, why would you jump ship to a lesser deal unless you have an ulterior motive to do so? Another thing I could point to was that I regularly use only a third of the calls given each month and in that respect they must actually make a decent wedge from me.

  • How do i sign up for byo online? Doesn't seem obvious. Does the byo @ 19/month qualify for fusion discount?

    • fusion code does not work on BYO plan. However, I signed up in store and they gave me first month free. :)

  • So, what's the -cheapest- Optus (or better = fast + reliable) mobile Internet [only] I can put into a Win 7 based ASUS laptop, with internal SIM socket?

Is there anything - a bit like LiveConnected - but -without- needing me to pay for (unusable) talk-time, etc….?

A data-only SIM, based on Optus (or better)…

MAX data for MIN $$$$ (around $11 / mon, like LiveConnected's counterpart, which gives 1.5 GB + lots of talk-time, etc. usage) in a BYO deal

    Anyone…?

  • I have my phone + my wife's phone under the one name….ie 2 x $39 plans. (about 3 months into it)
Rang 10 mins ago, asked for an upgrade to the 2gb.
Put me on hold while she asked, came back and said no problem….done.
Then asked for the other one too.
    So both done :)

  • Ive been with virgin for about 24 months, just changed to a new phone and they won't upgrade me.
They will just keep lying and say we dont upgrade existing customers, for new customers only… it just seems to me they are cheating their customers.
You either have to be loyal to some crazy point or have several phones in contract.

    Such unscrupulous methods…

    • -1

Its funny how they are number 1 in customer satisfaction and like "and dont just take our word for it" cuz believe me , they wont b number 1 this year and alot of people are probably going to leave virgin for their indecisiveness and stupidity. They should have only went 1 way, instead they stuck themselves in between with some people getting it and some not.

I surely wont be with them anymore after my contract expires

    • +2

That sounds a bit like buying anything for a price and then seeing a weekly special some weeks later and expecting a discount on your purchase. If you bought a phone on a contract then they work the figures to include repayment of the handset. Virgin will always upgrade your plan anytime. That's because you'll be paying them more. They don't switch customers like for like, that's laid out clearly in the contract small print. Sometimes we make a purchase, think we have a good deal, but then realise afterwards that it might not have been that great after all. What I don't get is why you stayed with Virgin after your initial contract concluded when Live connected offer 1.5GB data and the same amount of calls as Virgin for only 11 bucks? Supposedly, you wanted free credit on a new handset?

      • I actually joined virgin on some really old plan with 20mb data. My brother told me I can get a rate plan change for no charge at all and recommended I change to the big plan. I phoned them, no problem at all they upgraded my plan. Because they allow changing to the same $$ with no breaking contract. But look at them now, they upgrade 10% of their customers and leave the other 90% hanging. For me, that's unacceptable, it's either all or none at all.

But yeah, I'm still on virgin cuz my gf is on virgin (her rents pay her bill). But seriously?? they can't do a simple "same as before" upgrade for me now? Well forget it, I'll even pay for another phone just to avoid their crap

  • +2

Cool. Thank you. I just changed over. Barely finished the sentence of $29 still in contract and she said yes. Can be done :) Now no more being scared of excess charge usage. Now to pass on the news to family and friends :D

    • What plan did you transfer from?

      • +1

I was on the same $29 Big Plan (extra $5 for the handset), approx 8 months into a 24 months contract. They reset it immediately and my virgin usage meter app showed 2500.00MB.

        • +1

Damn, I'm on Big Cap $29 (Big Plan $29's predecessor)

  • my 2c is the virgin loyalty team is pretty useless, i rang them on a different issue a few weeks ago, and they said to check the website…

also a loyalty team that only might give you a 'deal' equivalent to a new customer… is pretty rotten from a customer service perspective.

ah well, I also am moving from virgin once my contract ends in June… i'm thinking amaysim :)

  • +1

I also rang yesterday & transferred to a "Virgin loyal team" lady. She told me that the offer only available for customer getting a new phone/contract blah blah blah.
I could upgrade the plan with the first operator (she told me it's possible, I only need to upgrade to the new plan), but when I asked is there any charge for the upgrade, she went away asking someone & then told me to speak with the "loyal team" …

I'm not sure for those got the upgrade will have any bill surprise later on…

I hardly use up my 250MB allowance so it's not a big deal to me anyway. Their 3G speed is not that great either.

  • -1

    Not really that attractive
Live connected 11x24+20 htc one x 539 from kogan. Comes out to be 822 for 2 yrs.
Unless u really want the extra 500 mb data
    Virgin 1056-5x29x.5=983.5
    A difference of 161.5

    • +3

You are missing out on A LOT of important factors here…

      • Unlimited Virgin-To-Virgin Calls and Text.
      • Rollover of unused credit.
      • International usage comes out of included value.
      • 24mnths warranty if you get a plan with a phone plus Genuine Australian phone stock.
      • And the support services of a major telco with brick and mortar stores.

      Pretty damn good offer…

      • +3

….and free Voicemail (deposit and retrieval)……free Virgin Group member benefits too.

I also recently discovered that Virgin had extended the Warranty of my handset for an extra year (in addition to the manufacturer warranty) to match my 2 Year contract period at no extra cost. I only found out after 16 months when the handset died!

        • forgot about voicemail… good pick up.

yeah the warranty thing is handy. we can thank the government somewhat for that. some department (prob AMTA) said that since the plans go for 2 years the warranty needs to be that long too…

  • No luck for me either - I'm on a $39 plan with 5 months remaining on contract and was told I could not move to Big Plan $39 as I would be breaking my contract.

  • Double post.

  • Great, my contract happens to expire June 30. I'm already with Virgin but not on a Big Plan, that should be fine right?

  • Dam just rangup and the lady said I cant unlessI break my existing contract..

    • +2

      Operator shop, worked for me.

    • If at first you don't succeed. Try, try and try again. They don't ask you for your details until they say "yes" anyway so shop as much as you like. I'm glad I was lucky first time around because she knew immediately what I was talking about. Finally a good deal that I could get my hands on (having missed out on so many) :)

  • -2

very bad customer service and i was a new customer. i will be avoiding virgin from now on.

  • I have seen the below in Virgin website. If you port out within 6 months on $19 month to month plan, would Virgin come up with a bill of $250 Premature Evacuation Fee?

    http://virginmobile.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/86/…

    Post-Paid:
1.All outstanding amounts will be billed on your next invoice, including any outstanding handset instalments and unbilled usage charges.
2.Your last invoice will contain Pro-Rata charges if cancellation (or porting out) occurs outside of your Billing Cycle date.
3.If you cancel (or port out) within the first 6 months of your commitment there will also be a $250 Premature Evacuation Fee applicable.
4.If you have multiple services with Virgin Mobile and you port out one of the services, the other remaining services on your Virgin Mobile account will not be affected.

  • +2

It seems that Virgin is violating what they say in their website:

"YOU ARE NOT REQUIRED TO PAY OUT THE COMMITMENT TO MOVE TO A HIGHER CAP OR THE SAME MINIMUM CAP SPEND (OF THE SAME FAMILY)"

    from Virgin website
    http://virginmobile.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/162…

"Upgrade to a higher plan (not a BYO plan)

Keeping your existing handset on the current commitment? Then you can upgrade (in this case a Rate Plan Change) to a higher plan without restarting your commitment with these conditions:

The new and existing plans must be in the same "family" in order to make an easy change within a commitment (pro rata will still apply).
You can only change to a plan that is currently available
You are not required to pay out the commitment to move to a higher cap or the same minimum cap spend (of the same family).
Handset payments will remain unchanged while the commitment is standing.
If you wish to downgrade in the future, you can only move back to the original minimum spend level that the service started on, without penalty (note: Plan must still be available)"

    • Thanks, I will phone them again tomorrow with that in mind.

Have you tried phoning them with that?

I previously phoned them 3 times with 2 different service reps, both refused my upgrade, no matter how much s*** I threw at them. But with that line in mind I will try again tomorrow.

On the 3rd phone call, after I complained so much, they finally said ok, we will pass it through and you will get a reply today or tomorrow. Nothing, no response at all…

I already plan on changing telcos after my new plan expires. Anyway I'll see how things go.

  • My plan (39 Easy Cap?) expires on 15 September. Phoned up Virgin to try to change to the 19 BYO Big Plan so I could take advantage of the extra 2gbs of data. Virgin said I'll have to pay $170. I told them that if I couldn't get the extra 2gbs now, they'll lose a customer in September. They said they couldn't do anything (which is fair enough, it was a big ask).

Looks like I'll be joining the Live Connected crew in September. Can anyone comment on the 3G reception? I know it uses Optus' network so technically it should be the same as Virgin but can anyone confirm that the reception for Live Connected and Virgin are the same?

    Cheers
