Spent a few hours tossing up between this unit and the zoom h1. Settled on this one for its robustness and as it was the same price in all the reviews. ($99 usd). Was floored when I found cheapest price in Aus of about $260.
Amazon sellers would not post to Australia. B&H now will. My first post, be nice :)

  • why is it so expensive ? it seems like a basic recorder really

    • +1

Everything is expensive in Australia, even if it is basic.

  • Nice find, checking if i could hook this up to my dslr for video recording.

    • I may have seen a camera attachment / adapter for Zoom H-1, apparently made in someone's workshop, but nice enough (AFAIK from photos only)… on eBay.

I'm sure an H-1 would also beat the Stereo mic's of some Panasonic compacts, eg, DMC TZ-10.

So, how does this Deal's counterpart device compare?

    • Theres no mounting point built in. (probably could adapt an arca swiss clamp though) I bought it for using a lavalier mic without needing wireless. Its a competitor for the zoom h1, apparently not quite as good sound but much more robust. knowing me it will get dropped, so its a factor. (Oh and I also bought a cheap tie mic the audio technica 3350 - very basic hance why i wasn't worried about quality difference of h1 and this one).

  • good find!
    I kinda wished I waited a bit longer now :P I bought the h1 about a month ago…
nothing wrong with it, but this does seem like a pretty nifty unit!

    • the H1 is good, has XLR imputs

      • +1

You may be confusin H-1 with H2n or H4n…
(I don't think H-1 is -thick- enough for an XLR jack)

        • your right.

  • Zoom H-1 doesn't look quite as much like Mickey Mouse, at this puppy does [to me].

Tascam uses AAA-cells (Zoom H-1, etc. use AA's. H-1 uses just ONE AA-cell)

Does this one make native MP3 files? (Yes, I see now)

Does it take almost any uSDRAM chip (ie, no -fixed- memory size)?

I also like the way the 2 mic's are positioned (in an X-pattern) for Stereo recording
    (on the Zoom H-1)

    My 2.2 cents…

The firmware issue mentioned is countered in comments, and just chose the same mic. This guy does weddings and low budget stuff. I'm doing real estate, so audio quality just needs to be good enough. If I was shooting drama I probably would've got the roland r-05, or tascam dr-40 (both about $250).
