Two Years of Star Alliance Gold Status US$10,000 (A$14,583) + Get US$10,000 in Travel Credit @ Thai Airways

1683

This deal may be best suited for opulent Ozbargainers, as it involves a lot of money. Though, even without this deal, you might be able to get the Star Alliance Gold anyway if you spend US$10,000 worth of flight tickets. But this deals gives you the Star Alliance Gold upfront for 2 years, and you can use the travel credit for friends and families too.

Star Alliance member Thai Airways now selling a full two years of Gold status in its Royal Orchid Plus rewards program (which is directly equivalent to Star Alliance Gold ) for a flat US$10,000 through its Time to Gold promotion – and you get that same US$10,000 back in travel credit.

That travel credit is issued in the form of 350,000 Thai Baht (or equivalent in your local currency), and can be redeemed against flights on Thai Airways and its regional arm Thai Smile through to December 31, 2023.

You can buy tickets for yourself, a friend, relative or work colleague – or even a perfect stranger, should you feel so inclined.

As long as you’re in a position to spend the equivalent of US$10,000 on those airlines across the next 18 months, then you’re essentially getting two years of Star Alliance Gold status for free. That’s two years of lounge access, an extra 20kg of checked luggage, priority services and other VIP perks across Star’s 26 member airlines – an impressive roster including heavy-hitters such as Air Canada, Air New Zealand, ANA, Lufthansa, SAS, Singapore Airlines, Turkish Airlines and United Airlines.

Buyers obviously need to be a member of Thai’s Royal Orchid Plus loyalty scheme (which is free to join), but even if they have not a single frequent flyer mile or status credit to their name, Time to Gold catapults them from a no-status zero to a Gold-plated hero (with an actual physical Gold card, not one of those digital ‘save-the-planet’ virtual cards). The Time to Gold promotion is available in Thailand, Denmark, Germany, Sweden, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, Australia, Bangladesh, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Pakistan, the Philippines, South Korea, and Hong Kong.

Disclaimer : The long-beleaguered Thai Airways was forced to enter a court-supervised rehabilitation after reporting its worst-ever net loss – US$4.1 billion – in 2020 due to the global pandemic. However, the carrier chalked up a net profit of US$1.6bn 2021 – its first net profit in five years – after restructuring efforts which included selling assets and “improving management efficiency”.

    Interesting deal.

But strategically used US$10K to purchase flights on selected Star Alliance airline (e.g. SQ, UA, NZ,..) could also get enough miles for the Gold status.

The OZB way would be to find easy-reachable Gold level with Virgin or Qantas, accomplish it, and then ask someone in Star Alliance for status match (sometimes with status challenge), e.g. Singapore or United.

E.g. with Virgin, it's not too hard to get 500 credits for Gold, especially with occasional double status credit promotions, plus family pooling, and a bit more credits for Coles purchases. Nice status run for 500 credits can cost less than $2,000, especially on tourist routes where Business seats are cheaper. E.g. MEL-BNE-CNS return in J could be ~ $1,300 for 320 credits and 4 segments, just MEL-OOL/BNE-MCY return in J for $600 giving 160 credits, etc.

Easy way to *A gold was through Aegean several years ago, I think around 2016 I got it. They only required 20k miles, where airlines like SQ needed 50k. You didn't even need to fly any sectors with them and could credit any other *A to them. Once you had gold with them it was just a matter of chaining the status matches to all the others. From the one Aegean I managed to status match to:

      Air Berlin Gold (One World)
      Air Italia Gold (Sky Team)
      Etihad Gold
Turkish Airlines Gold (*A but it was for 2 years!)
Virgin Gold (I think this was through Etihad or maybe a 3 month "trial")

Was a bit of effort in the few months that I went and got them all matched. So at one point I had gold status with all 3 major alliances. Pity around that time my work dried up and I stopped travelling internationally so I barely got to use any of them much before they all expired. I used them a few times going through Singapore for the lounge and a few domestic Virgin/Q lounges. Most of the miles with Aegean I did in the US, got the status and didnt need to go back, would have been nice to use a lounge or 2 after all the domestic flying in US/Canada to get the frigging status. Now all I have is a card wallet with all of them and the subsequent drops back down to silver and bottom when they all ran out of status.

Will be interesting which companies start offering these types of matches again now that travel has resumed and they are fighting for the big dollar flyers.

  • Literally crazy price

  • If you actually used 10k USD (so $14k AUD) worth of flights (especially in long distance business class), wouldn’t you basically qualify for gold status anyway? So it’s kinda redundant

    • +2

Sure… you could get gold status AFTER taking $14k AUD in flights with them, but it would mean you have to wait to 'earn' the status.

    • +1

You could use the credit for family / friends, or even try to sell to others.
Basically gold status, for other people flying

  • +1

I wish the travel credit can be used to purchase other star alliance flights directly..

  • If you spend $14k with any airlines, you should have lounge access no matter what

    • +2

Sure… but some time after you do the spending. You don't get the status as soon as you purchase.

  • Maybe they are using the Qantas platform which charges double if you try and use a flight credit

  • Aka
Giving Thai airways an interest free loan

Fair enough though given the financial troubles they're going through

  • +3

Thai airways is broke, but fortunately has the government of Thailand as a major shareholder and debt holder. Yes passenger numbers have rebounded but they wont be clear of debt until 2024….paying up front for gold status and flight credit seems appealing but they're doing it for a reason to bolster their balance sheet up front.

    All the deets here:

To be fair its probably not a bad deal, but you probably wanna spend this flight credit near term just to be safe.

    Bought 10 thanks

    Self admitted shallow mind here….

The only thing that get people over to the country is punting. If you have 10K to spare for the habit, better spend that money in Sydney, much safer with more choice ….

Not to mention the days that 3000 Baht (about A$100) will buy you a whole night of sweetness is gone. All the men heaven price drove up by Koreans and PRCs due to crack down in their own country. This is happening all over Asia, Thailand, Philippines…..etc

    • Seems wong.

  • No one else here surprised by this deal?

  • +1

star alliance gold really isn't worth that much

imo at best star alliance gold is equivalent to qantas's points club plus (lounge access)

also thai always is trash tier, as if you would fly with them if you had the choice.

  • I got this email from Thai Airways last week but didn't think it was such a great deal with the 2 year limit

  • +8

Need to be careful. You are buying in American dollars and getting Thai baht back. That opens you up to a decent amount of currency risk.

With the strengthening us dollar a lot of the emerging markets are getting clobbered and desperate for dollar funding.

You could see Thai baht drop in price. It's still a decent deal if you really want the status but I would try and use it pretty asap.

    • +1

I agree that one should use the credit asap. I see at the time of the promotion launch, the 350,000 Baht was US$10,500 (see the screenshot), but as of today it is US$9763.

      • But if the tickets prices are baselined on Thai currency, you do not have a risk. As the ticket price and travel credit both are in Baht.

        • are they?

  • opulent Ozbargainers

  • The 2 year limit is a difficult part here to accept.

Might just be better off spending $600 on a Qantas Club membership so that you can pretend you're a high flyer when flying Jetstar to Bali.

    • You would be actually a higher flyer this way. :)

For Bali flights, Qantas uses B737 with cruising altitude of 33,000 ft.

Jetstar uses B787 usually cruising at 35,000 ft - a whole 1km above.

And neither gets any lounge access in DPS when returning from Bali.

BEWARE. Thai Airways have filed for insolvency in multiple countries. This means you might lose your money, and insurances will not catch your losses.
Many people on review websites complain about refunds not being issued for cancelled flights.

    • +2

Yep, got cancelled flight with no refund and no help because they filed for bankruptcy.

    • -1

Somewhat related. I've had a lot of enterprise gear with Thai Airways branding pass through to ISPs like Telstra and Optus lately. Like they haven't removed the stickers or the startup config still has Thai Airways. And these aren't from Australia either.

  • +3

Thai airway please give me refund for my flight booked in 2020 first.

  • Wife wants to join as well.

Is there a discount for two?

  • If only transferable to Singapore air… I'd buy 2… Thai Business is Singapore economy with larger but lower quality seats and worse food…

Service is okay though, but how much more comfortable can that make your ride

  • Though almost all lounges seem to be closed because of Rona still…

  • Can you use the travel credit to book for someone else? I have a large family, and I can't use up all 10K.

    • Yes, Please refer to the FAQ section at this URL

How can I redeem THB 350,000 TIME TO GOLD Air Ticket Cash Credit Voucher?
Air Ticket Cash Credit can be redeemed for booking and ticket issuing during May 25, 2022 until December 31, 2023 by making reservation and ticketing via THAI website, THAI Contact Center or THAI ticketing offices worldwide. In case of redeeming tickets for other persons via THAI Contact Center or THAI ticketing offices worldwide, TIME TO GOLD package owner’s consent document (valid passport/official ID card with authorized signature) is required.

      • Oh no kids not in it, that kills the deal for me:

Air Ticket Cash Credit Voucher can’t be used to issue child or infant tickets when booking via thaiairways.com

        • +1

isn't the solution booking via THAI Contact Center or THAI ticketing offices worldwide

  • Price has changed to $10,500 and sales extended to 31 Aug.
