  • Can you use rewards dollars to purchase the gift card?

  • +2

waits for the debate between 10% and 9.09% to start

    • +2

That you used the word debate has triggered me a little bit. The fundamental principles of maths aren't up for debate!

      • +1

They shouldn't be, yet they usually are when it comes to this topic. Sadly…

    Perfect timing. Thanks wookiemonster

  • Are gift card purchases eligible for meeting minimum spend for reward points on credit cards? (E.g QFF?)

    • +3

It depends on the merchant. For BIG W, it should be eligible.

Your financial institution won’t know what exactly you have purchased (unless you send them a copy of the purchase receipt). They’ll only get basic information from BIG W (e.g. the amount you spent, the merchant category code (MCC), merchant name, store location). BIG W’s MCC will be for a department store (which should be 5311), because the MCC reports the type of business you’re at. The MCC does not change for whether you’re purchasing clothing or an iPad or a gift card from BIG W1, so it will appear to your financial institution that you’re spending heaps of money at a department store. As long as the credit card sign-up offer does not exclude department stores, you will be fine.

I met my last credit card sign-up offer almost exclusively by purchasing gift cards through Coles and Woolworths.

If you were purchasing gift cards through some merchants (e.g. Australia Post), you’ll run into issues. Australia Post sell gift cards in their physical stores and online, but Australia Post is most likely classified as a government agency. Considering any spend at government agencies is almost always excluded from credit card sign-up offers, purchasing gift cards through Australia Post is a bad idea.

      1. The MCC will only change at BIG W if you’re doing an EFTPOS cashout in the same transaction as purchasing a gift card (i.e. withdrawing cash from a bank account at a BIG W checkout via a card operating on the EFTPOS network). Cashout is not possible over card networks besides the EFTPOS network, so it is a moot point for this discussion regarding credit cards.

      • Just adding my experience that a recent purchase at a Big W (self-checkout) was reported with an MCC of 5331 Variety Stores. This is the only result in Google that showed up when trying to track down what the MCC might be so commenting for posterity.

Also, Myer reported as 5311 Department Stores and Bunnings as 5200 Home Supply Warehouse Stores. Ymmv, of course, as @WookieMonster rightly says!

  • Got 2k worth, 40000 points. Showing in app but points balance not updated yet

    • Update: already got my 20k qantas points in my account.

  • I have a dumb question regarding the offer period

May I know if is inclusive of 20/07/2022? (e.g: will the offer still be valid on 20/7/2022 7pm?)

    • +1

      Yes
