The 4th Gen 'premium' at least have the bigger drivers. The others are basically just bigger, rounded 3rd Gen.
In saying that, apparently the 4th Gen use aluminium in their construction, and the larger size gives a very slightly better sound at higher volume (less nvh). It also uses a new chip which improves Alexas response time.
Enormous differences for the audiophile in all of us! 😉
Amazon have realised that as Gen 3 users get older, they're not as agile as they used to be. The Gen 4 Echo Dot seeks to solve that problem: it does the same thing as the Gen 3 echo dot, but you can also play lawn bowls from the comfort of your home!

I had the dot which became green waste.
This is basically a Dot with a clock.

The 4th Gen is the one up from this at $70 that you need for controlling the TV, air con, lights etc, right? Or does the Dot do all of that anyway?

Yes, Zigbee hub… plus has the larger 3" woofer and .8" drivers.
The Dot has terrible sound quality.
Spend an extra $20 and get the Alexa Gen 4 full version, which has way better speaker quality. It's on sale for $70 at JB as well

Gen 3 was the perfect size. Not sure why these are getting bigger with every new gen
