If your going to get this drill press, be sure to change the Chuck on it as the current one is meant for hand held drills.

Best one for this is: Röhm Supra Keyless Drill Chuck… https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B000ZEH8N8?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_s…

Sure you can get a better drill press but for me it was about size, weight. This little upgrade made a noticeable difference for my projects and is actually made for a drill press.

I've been very happy with the chuck this model comes with, I'm pretty sure it is designed for a drill press, I don't think it wouldn't be suitable for a handheld drill. While the chuck you linked looks good, it's more the half the cost of the whole drill press.

I've had two of these drills, the first one developed a electronic issue with the speed control after quite a few years and I bought a replacement because otherwise I've been very happy with it. It's not a heavy duty drill but things like the speed control, digital depth gauge, part clamp etc. are really useful (even some of the features I thought might be a bit gimmicky have been useful).

At this price I think it's really good value now (the price does jump around quite a bit).

The Chuck is definitely for a hand drill.

        Please refer to this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nCqVoaGVK8g&t=348s

He explains everything and even shows you the results.

Take it from me, i used it before and after the chuck upgrade and to me personally it was worth the upgrade. Dont get me wrong - its still a great press but it will be much better if you have the $ to burn.

        • Thanks for the reply - I guess I was wrong about the chuck. I think a was just plesently supprised that for a cheap machie like this the chuck seemed pretty good to me. The first drill press I got did jave a chuck that felt better then the second so there is also probably not as much QC as there would be with more epensive chucks.

Can also confirm the chuck supplied is designed for hand held drills, with both the jaw design being different and tolerances higher. The change to the Rohm Supra 871050 does transform the unit. Especially when using the unit with small bits, ie <3mm.
It also removed most of the runout on the when changing over the chuck as well. It makes it an ideal unit to drill plastics with the upgraded chuck. Though it probably changes it from being an OzBargain to an OzValue deal ;)
Though very happy to see you are getting excellent use as is!

Cheers, thanks for letting me know regarding the chuck design and the additional info. I never bothered to measure the runout, I think I had low expectations for a machine like this and that coloured my response - maybe I will have to look at trying a different chuck.

  • Great price for this drill!

    Good video review here: https://www.woodreview.com.au/news/bosch-pbd40-drill-press-r…

  • I've had this one a few years now, it's miles ahead of your usual junk drill presses. Speed control that stays constant when drill, on the fly speed adjustment with no belts. Haven't had any issues with the supplied chuck.

  • I paid $319 in an October 2020 deal, so this is a good price in my mind.

I've been very happy with the drill. The wheel handle is good for small depths, but is a bit hard to keep turning for great depths. I have a 3D printer and there is a good handle that bolts on (like the handle that some truckies use on the steering wheel)

  • I've had one of these for a few years, mixed feelings. Laser guide (once calibrated), digital depth read out, depth stop and easy speed control are very handy. Out of the box spindle play on mine was pretty awful, many people had the same issue, not sure if Bosch have addressed it since. Changing the tiny (gearbox?) needle bearings and replacing the column felt wipers with custom UHMWPE collars made a big improvement. I also replaced the chuck with the Röhm Supra, which made a measurable improvement but not major. While I find the Supra chuck better to use, at more than a 1/4 of the price of the drill press, I wouldn't recommend it as a value for money modification.

The wheel handle is a stupid design idea but not annoying enough that I have bothered to replace it.
