  • Whether you use the ICOM or Vertex Standard (or the other guy's fav brand: Wouxun), when you're chatting eith friends on UHF CB (or Ham Radio, for that matter)…

    • There's NO Air-Time to buy, over the life of the radio, as there is with mobiles

    Rent = Buying Air

    Mobiles = Buying Air-Time

    The CHOICE is Your… :-)

    Ham's -can't- use Encryption, on their frequencies.
    (of course, Hams have a few Digital Voice modes…)

    Only CB (eg, UHF CB) -allows- encrypted transmission
    (as do maybe licensed -private- business channels).

    I suspect that the kind of encryption used in this radio
    is something that authorities can decrypt pretty easily,
    so it's -not- for criminals.

    But as a way to enjoy somewhat private comms, without
    buying "air-time" every time you do… it could work.

    (My 2.2 cents only… I am NOT an Electronics Engineer)

    • "Ham's -can't- use Encryption, on their frequencies.
      (of course, Hams have a few Digital Voice modes…)"

      That's incorrect, you can use P25 on whatever frequency you want as long as the radio is compatible. You can get Motorolas that cover ham frequencies, so why not?

      • hams cannot leagally use encrypted transmissions. ie: need decypher keys to listen etc.
        they can use digital protocols that can be decoded without special decypher keys.
        in fact there a a couple of "digital" repeaters for ham access operating in victoria.

    I'm just a bit disaappointed with Prestige Com, ie, due to indications
    that they've -stopped- selling Ham Radio gear. :-/

    • Now Yaesu has been "taken back" to yaesu in japan from Motorola/vertex, it is more difficult to get gear as the "local" supply channel for resellers like Strictlyham etc is now from HK rather than from vertex Melbourne.
      Hopefully the repair centre is still in Motorola's office in Burwood Vic.
