  • Damn, bought 2 Dots yesterday at $19 each when when Prime Day started. Anyone know if Amazon will refund the difference on their own promotion?

    • I did the same.

    • +2

Cancel your order, that's what i just did.

    • Customer Service will likely suggest you repurchase at the new price and return the original purchase, but if you debate with them sometimes they will give you a promotional credit on your account.

Probably easier to re-buy and refund.

  • what do you use for this one?

    • You can use All major credit cards or Pay at Your Pace with Zip. 😉

  • Thanks Op.

They're going to have a tonne of returns changing the deals like this

Any clues on why 4th gen is better and worth paying more for as it seems to have same specs

    • +2

4th Gen has later model chip (Alexa response time is quicker), uses aluminium in construction (has slightly better nvh at higher volume levels), and apparently has slightly better acoustics due to cavity size. But all these things would only be very slight improvements that most would probably never notice.
The actual 4th Gen Echo (not Dot) is larger again and has larger drivers: 3" woofer and .8" tweeters.

    • If you want to pair with FireTV 4K Max, you need 4th Gen. Earlier models aren't compatible for whatever reason.

    • 4th gen has long-range LoRa-based https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amazon_Sidewalk shrug

  • Cancelling and buying 4 rather than 3, the extra ends up being $1 more 🤣

    • Assuming you mean 4 'units', not the Gen 4?

      • +2

Oh yes, 4 units of gen 3. I prefer the look of the gen 3. Is hides in the room at lot more than the gen 4

        • Yeah, we've got Gen3 Dots in all the kid's rooms.
Wish you could still get them with the clock though, had to get Gen4 for our room.

        • Don’t forget echo dot 4 has Ultrasound Motion Detection, It can work similar like motion detectors and can turn lights on when you enter the room etc. and many more including intruder alert automation Many ppl doesn’t know that.

          • @geeksman: I did not know that, does that integrate with Home Assistant tho?

            • @mmagin: Not Sure, I didn’t do deep dive into Home Assistant yet, I only used it in alexa app, It works great. Also sound detection routine works like charm.

  • IF no cash back.

For those that bought the gen 3 yesterday at $19 after 14% cash back is around $16.34 (might be a bit more due to GST) is it worth it returning and saving a few bucks?

    • Approx $16.58 each if you got the 14% (pre-GST).
For $4.16 total… up to you. I guess you could send a quick email explaining it, and see if you can maybe score a credit for the difference.
But anything more than that, to me would be a pain. (Skip that next coffee, and you're already in front. 😉)

      • Also need to ask whether you need another echo dot 3g.

Got 2x 2g which will put into rooms use less often after getting a 2nd 3g.

Problem with these things is since they are so cheap they aren't really worth anything on the second hand market. Might be even hard giving them away.

        • Yeah, worth next to nothing second hand. Especially when the 3rd Gen is constantly at $19 through Amazon. It was being done for about $17 at Bunnings and OW a while back, and you could even score one for $10 if you signed up to Prime.

They all work together, so rather than throwing any out, just stick them in other rooms.
I've created a few groups, so rather than just the one room playing, I can transfer the same music into the kid's rooms, upstairs, living area, downstairs, whole house, etc. And also use it as an intercom at times. ;)

          • @Snoop: True. Maybe stick one on each wall of a room and get surround sound :D

  • Is there much difference between the clock and non clock version in the gen four? Looking at getting two

    Thanks

    • One has a clock. The other, you need to ask the time :)

I just discovered these can be configured in stereo pairs (for some apps at least), so an excuse to buy more!

      • Thanks :D

  • Ordered 2 of the gen 3 thanks OP

  • If I could of got the clock 4th gen version for the price of two without clock, would of bought them.
Got three gen 3 already for the kids rooms

  • wish myer dropped their price on these, just want to use my myer giftcard from bing rewards

  • Good one for our new rental apartment, hope it worthwhile

  • Could you use these in stereo as pc speakers?

    • no, as off till today bluetooth stereo not supported yet. If you do stereo setup, You can cast stereo audio to echo from Spotify desktop app.

  • Amazon refunded my order of 2 echo dot 3rd Gen and 2 4th Gen.
I didn’t cancel. This happen to anyone else?
