Great price - I just bought this for ~$30. Works really well.

I have this for about a year now. Coffee grinds tends to get stuck between the spacing of the threads, although it's quite easy to clean.

    • Same, I just tap it on the sink, or use my wdt tool to get rid of the grinds

  • +1

thanks. was looking for one to replace the default Sunbeam tamper which has a small gap.

    • if u measure ur basket it probably 58.6-7 mm
which means u can get a precision distributor/tamper at 58.5mm and will not have the gap

I have this exact one for use with my Breville dual boiler (and a naked portafilter) it works great. Fits just about perfect, evens it out nicely, tamps well. Used to struggle to be consistent, with this I get a 9bar extraction every time with no channelling.

  • Bought this before. The two ends were different sizes. NOT 58mm

    • So what size filter basket is this for? I have a Rocket R58 which uses the E-61 group.

      • 58mm Breville dual boiler.

I bought the matow brand and had to get it refunded

        Both ends were different sizes

    • So.. can be use on Breville dual boiler 58mm? Or not possible?

      • yes, i use one on my breville dual boiler …..

  • Nice find, looking for the 53mm version!

    • +1

Pretty sure that was part of the Prime Day sales.

I have read that these are no longer thought to be effective - because the way they compress the coffee looks flat, but actually has waves of density (which smooths if you then tamp properly anyway).

Anecdotally, I have this exact distributor, and my shots are better without it (just using a needle to stir the grinds and tamping). The only thing it does is level the grinds, which you don't need help with after tamping a few times.

    • +6

This was my thought exactly - does this do anything a WDT and tamp doesn't do?
I don't really see a point to these devices if you're prepping your puck properly manually anyway… a WDT is a much better investment (and cheaper), you can even do the cork and sewing needle hack, rather than throw your money at something like this.

      • What WDT do you use? I'm just using a toothpick (ugh).

        • I bought this flameer one - which is even cheaper than the other I linked! I did end up cutting the round parts off with pliers so it's more needly lol

I was hoping it would match the colour of the wood stain on the niche, but it doesn't, but it works very well and stops channeling fantastically.

FWIW, I have a Breville dual boiler to go with the niche.

Im using this cheap AliExpress felting needle ~ $7 with shipping. It really does a great job.

Just had a look and is an even cheaper one ~ $3.70 with shipping

Edit: if you're in a hurry and rich, then you can get the same kind of thing from Amazon for $15 + shipping

        • +2

The one https://www.amazon.com.au/Dolity-Distributor-Espresso-Stirri… is the best and cheap $15, you want something with thin acupuncture needles.

The curved hook ones and thick needles aren't reccomended.

True ozbargain strategy is using a cork, put some holes in it and stick acupuncture needles in!

          • @Drpepper666: This looks really nice but it's pricey. But if it lasts "forever" the one-off cost doesn't bother me too much:

            https://www.coffeeparts.com.au/pesado-clump-crusher-riga

            • @DevGuy: It's got a pretty basic job, some people
              3d print their own.

$45 seems like a lot, just paying for the wooden handle I suppose. Assume you've got a bottomless portafilter already, to know if your shot is channelling or not? I'd put the money towards that first.

My shots seem good, doesn't take long before it's a nice crema flow from the middle so must be eye balling it all ok. Just takes a bit of care and attention but appreciate not everyone has the skills. Getting the grind approximately correct is the main thing IMO.

              • @G-rig: Oh for sure, I’d be paying for the aesthetics not function. Yes to bottomless PF but I often make for two so can’t use it other than for diagnosis.

                • @DevGuy: Yeah it's a bit of a fancy accessory too but good to know hey. Then can still use the normal portafilter too.

      • I've never bothered with a WDT but may as well now I got a bottomless portafilter.

The style of tempers in the op look like they'd keep it level but not that hard to tamp a few times and take a bit of care to check it's roughly level, I grind straight into the handle.

Don't think you need either, just upgrade to a heavier stainless steel one and throw the cheap plastic tamper in the bin.

        • What filter baskets are recommended these days? I'm still using my ancient La Marzocco ones that I bought for the Sylvia nearly two decades ago (!).

          • @DevGuy: Dunno to be honest, whatever comes with the group handle

          • @DevGuy: VST and IMS are popular. I've got an IMS, but actually found it hard to get a decent shot out of it. I just use the Gaggia provided basket.

    • +1

I think they’re still a good buy to replace some of the standard plastic tamps that come with machines.

    • Main benefit for me is that it's a cheap way to get a consistent tamp as a beginner since you can set the depth of the tamp.

Calibrated tampers seem pretty expensive and I'm not sure how good the cheap versions would be.

Also the tamper that came with my Breville was pretty bad so it was a good upgrade anyway.

    • I am using funnel + WDT with my BDB. One thing I noticed is the stock portafilter doesn't sit flat on desk. Occasionally I noticed my puck is smooth but not 100% flat due to tamping position. It's definitely user error, but with this, at least I can be sure my puck is flat most of the time.

I agree this is really optional if you are using WDT, but it does help someone noob like myself.

p/s: The plastic tamper came with my BDB has some gap and the edge isn't tamp properly

      • You can get a self levelling tamper like normcore or decent

    • Rubbish. Any waves of density would be completely eliminated when you tamp it with the flat side of the puck.

    • That's why I thought I'd buy one of these cheap ones; to test out the concept. I've now been subjected to way too many Instagram videos of people pulling fantastic looking shots using them.

Forgot to apply the additional 10% code though :'(

      • i have a few tampers, flat, dished …..this one works great on my breville dual boiler ……i flatten the coffee heap a bit with my palm, then tamp with the leveler …… no channeling from uneven coffee distribution …..

  • +1

nice perfect fit for dual boiler

was excited when I saw this post. Then I realised this is some dodgy brand…

I'm more looking for a deal for this one https://www.amazon.com.au/gp/product/B082MKVYFV

Thanks bro. I pulled the trigger before reading your comment. Managed to get the order cancelled. I thought it was MATOW branded one.

      • +1

        It's all the same

        • I assume you have "all" of them to make this claim?

Do they all fit breville single wall 58mm double basket snugly?

          • +3

@ausdday: He made that claim because he had commonsense

        • the. matow claims “ new model” …..if you look at the textured ring on both models ….on .the new matow the ring is larger / deeper , you can count the number of diamonds in the ring height ……not sure what difference it makes unless you use small doses and don’t fill the basket a lot e.g 8gm doses…..i have mugs of coffee so put in heaps of coffee so never an issue with fill height and tamp pressure ….

    • +7

There's no "real" brand..all of those sold are the same generic made in china thing, just stamped with different "brands"

      • they don’t actually have a brand stamped or etched on them , so variation might be just the batch and if a design has changed slightly e.g more depth adjustment ….. the matow says new design since 2020 for more depth …..i’d say all new ones are that extra depth now …..

  • +1

Did I miss something? I can't see the 'coupon' anymore. Is the 10% off promotion over?

  • +1

I use this with the dual boiler, does a fantastic job.

    • May I ask are you using MATOW branded one? Or some generic one?

Does both end fit your BDB 58mm single walled basket snugly ?

      • Just a generic one, looks the same as this, i think heaps of groups make these. both ends fit well!

        • Thanks @tightm8

I saw reviews / youtube, which many of them complained the distributor / tamper slightly too small for Breville 58mm basket. That's why I am not sure which one to get.

          e.g.
          Amazon MATOW
          youtube MATOW

          • @ausdday: That's correct. I have used this one on the 58mm basket and it is slightly smaller - I ended up getting a different design that's 58.5mm which fits better.

      • +1

mine was ordered off amazon as matow , have had for 2 years now …..matow is not actually embossed or laser etched …. i have a few brands set at different heights and none have brand names whether from matow or otherwise ….the picture of the matow also doesn’t show brand embossing / etching.

  • My matow one is awesome. Good heft to it. Way better results than the one that came with my Breville Barista express.

    • +1

yeah, not sure why the one in the video is such a bad fit …. mine is. good fit …

  • Wouldn't it still be better to get a Pullman tamper machined to fit your basket exactly?

    • +1

im over the $80-$120 tampers …..don’t make better coffee than the matow at$30 i own or the matow look alike for $23 i have gifted to people …..grind and how much coffee you put in does make a difference… just need to upgrade from the plastic ones that come with the machines and don’t be stingy with how much coffee you use ….breville. also include larger baskets because we tend to drink stronger coffee in australia if we make it as a milky drink …. and we have the small ruler and large coffees and large coffee needs ….more coffee than regular or it’s weaker.

the coffee shop at work just grinds into the basket, tamps and extracts ….. makes good coffee, no needling, no dosing cups, no scales ….but he does have different basket for each cup size.

coffee and wine seem to be 2 markets where people try and sell accessories and rituals ….

      • +1

These all seem pretty gimmicky and seem to have problems with not fitting very well to the edges of the baskets, plus the added hassle of pulling apart and cleaning, compared to a solid machined tamper that is exact to the edges, which leaves almost 0 room for side error, as well as shaped concave, convex or flat to suit the shower screen.

  • im guessing most peeps here are coffee gurus, anyone have a gaggia classic and done some mods to it?

    • +1

Yes. I have GCP. Spring mod for 9 bar. Installed a thermocouple to assist with temperature surfing (not the full PID mod). I use WDT (Dolity as mentioned above), a distributor (similar to this post) to level, then a separate tamper. Using the supplied non-pressurised double shot basket in a bottomless portafilter. 18g in for 36g out in ~25sec.

      • do you use your temperature assist as much as you thought you would?

        • I used it to see how long the block took to get to temperature and be reasonably stable during the on/off cycling. After about 15mins it cycles on at ~88C and maxes out at ~96C. I pull a shot 30sec after the light comes back on. It's not perfect but I'm pretty happy with the consistency. The thermocouple is just attached to the top of the block so it's just an indicative temperature rather than an accurate measurement of true water temperature.

    • Yeah, mine is pre-2015 so don't need to worry about the spring mod.

      Recommend the following:
      - proper heavy tamper
      - Silvia steam wand
      - https://www.shadesofcoffee.co.uk/slim-drip-tray-complete-wit…
(Better height clearance for normal mugs and makes life easier.

Had to recently pull it apart as the water wasn't coming out of the showerhead, bit of neglect and lack of descaling but upgraded to these:

Shades of coffee are great and much better prices than here, even with postage. Good advice too. Recommend getting from them.

They sell a bottomless portafilter too but I ended up getting the genuine gaggia one from eBay (shop in WA) which is the best one, and the generic ones aren't much cheaper (or a lot more if you want wooden handle).

  • Some personal feedback for those interested.

I have used the MATOW with the dual boiler basket/portafilter (58mm) but found it it is slightly smaller. The other issue is the short lip on the edge - the grinds always got stuck on the edge and created a mess

I ended up buying a Prettyia Coffee Distributor/Leveler Tool which is 58.5mm. It fits better and makes less of a mess.

Any Distributors & Tampers that are 58.5 would work better with the dual boiler basket.

    • Interesting. I'll give mine a go from this order. Will return if it doesn't fit dual boiler well

  • Received the tamper. Confirming it fits the Breville Dual Boiler fine. It does a great job! High quality and solid. Can now get consistent 9 bars pressure on the BDB

    • Good to hear. My one I ordered previously, had to get refunded. Both ends were different diameters, and neither were 58mm (or 58.5 etc)

    • Just wondering - you'd still have to get the grind to the right consistency still/first, this thing just stops ya pressing down too hard right? Some people measure the coffee too but that's a lot of faffing about.

As long as it's ~30s shot time it should be right hey.

      • Yep this thing just provides consistency on the tamp as you'll do is place the puck and give it a few turns.
I don't weigh my coffee - the breville does 30 second shots and I make sure getting 9 bars of pressure.
For grinder I use the breville grinder pro

        • So if you put too much coffee in then that Tamp won't sit flush and you take some out?

          • @G-rig: Yep although you should get your grind settings close. Too much coffee or too fine a grind and your machine will choke up
