  • Any thoughts on Samsung g55a 2k 27inch? It's is 350 now. Might buy this instead heard 2k is sweet spot for 27 and gaming

    • +1

I have the S2721DGF, QHD at 27" is fantastic.
The Samsung you're looking at has similar specs on paper although it is curved.
Curved 27" is gimmicky rather than immersive but I guess it shouldn't be worse than a flat screen

      • +3

Ok thanks, I will buy this instead. Yh just because something is curved it can till do the job if you know what I mean!

        • +1

Also, the Samsung can accept 4k signal while the Dell S2721DGF cannot, but I find curved in a 27" is a waste.

          • @kml22: That's a feature you'd want if you've got a PS5

  • +1

Do people find it annoying that the buttons are located on the back?
No type C port it seems?

    • +3

Power button is on the bottom. I don't use the rear buttons too often so not an issue imo. Though if you want a multiple monitor setup I could see it being a problem
      And yeah, no USB-C input

    • +4

In a single monitor setup buttons on the back is fine, but in a multi-screen setup with the screens close together it’s a bit more awkward to reach the buttons.

Ultimately it depends how often you need to change inputs or settings. There is the ability to assign shortcuts to some of the buttons, so this may help.

    • I use a dual set up and one is also connected to a dock so I manually change sources every day for work.

I don't find it annoying as the majority of things you want to change can be done with the top "button" which is a thumb stick that gets you through every menu. The surrounds are inset (as you can see on the photos) so it's easy to find without looking and then you can just click on it or move it up, down, left, right for the settings, pretty easy. You generally don't need the other buttons and the power is on the bottom of the frame.

    • +3

You can use Dell Display Manager to change a lot of the settings from software instead.

    • Buttons on the Dell is fine. I constantly use them to change inputs. 100% smoother and better experience than doing the same on the Samsung G7. Laggy as (profanity) starting and input changing makes the Samsung painful compared to the Dell next to it

    • No

    • +1

Software to control it works fine I've found.

  • +9

Perfect for my arcade machine! Now I will be able to play pacman at its intended 165 fps!

    • +3

Waka Waka has never looked so smooth

      • +3

To be fair CRT don't have input latency so it's probably still smoother on an old CRT.

    • I hope you'll let all the 4:3 games games run stretched at 1080p.
And put FSAA on to boot.
That should get a few groans out of anyone older than 30. ;)

  • +1

How does the 24" G2422HS compare to the other 24" one: https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Dell-24-Monitor-S2421HS-AMD-Free…

I mean, if for just office based stuff, which is a better buy? Is there a downside to a gaming monitor for office work? Or simply overkill? If overkill, would it be better value?

    • +1

It would just be overkill but why would you buy the less spec one you linked when the difference is literally a few dollars? It's a no brainer, the gaming one is a much better monitor, it's going to give you a nicer screen/display, it's edge lit as well not backlit. Plus who wants a silver monitor lol

      • why edge lit better than back lit?

Plus who wants a silver monitor lol

who looks at the back of their monitor all day?

    • Since they are almost exactly the same price, the gaming one looks like slightly better value.

The S model has pivot which personally I reckon is a downside.

      • The S model has pivot which personally I reckon is a downside.

        why?
        also how does it pivot?

        • I find that pivot (landscape rotate to portrait mode) means the monitor is never truly level, since the stands don't lock in either orientation.
In my opinion it's a weird feature, since you probably won't be able to pivot the screen without adjusting everything anyway, unless you have a single screen in the middle of your desk at the top of its height adjustment.
People I know who use portrait monitors keep them permanently in that orientation so the feature doesn't even help them!

    • +1

The G2422HS is definitely better even for office work
      - 350 nit vs 250 nit - much higher peak brightness
      - 165Hz vs 75Hz - far smoother which can be appreciable to some in non-gaming tasks

Colour accuracy seems about the same. Only advantage I can see with the S2421HS is you can rotate the monitor to a vertical orientation if you like that. The look is arguably more professional looking than the gaming one but the G2422HS doesn't have an overly "gamer" look imo

    • +1

      I have both!

I bought two S2421HS for my home office, they are totally fine for that purpose - but not at that price! I paid $139 each for those. I also have two of these G2422HS on my main desktop, running at the full 165Hz, and they're great!

If they're the same price, get the G2422HS unless you're willing to wait till the S2421HS hit the $140-$150 mark again.

I actually prefer the look of the S2421HS though… Justin9mm said it's silver, but it's actually more like a textured off-white colour on the back and suits my white office. The G2422HS is all black. :)

One day I'll move to 2x S2721DGF, but that 27" 1440p screen is twice the price of the 24" 1080p… plus I only have a 1650 super :(

  • Does a gaming monitor have any benefits over a "normal" similar-sized monitor for general web browsing for someone with no interest in gaming?

    • +2

The higher refresh rate gives a smoother feel to everything. It's rather subtle though and you might not notice it unless you've been using a high refresh rate monitor and then switch back to a standard 60Hz one.

    • +1

The higher refresh makes general use a lot more pleasant so I would say yes.

    • probably not

when you web browsing most of the time the page is static
      until you do some scrolling.

for web browsing there is more enjoyment from

-a bigger screen = can see more of the page or it just looks better with higher resolution, also videos would look better on bigger screen

-higher dpi/resolution = which would make the text, images, video more sharper (which I think also less tiring on the eyes)
and if you watch a 4k video on 4k monitor etc..it would look more better than 4k on a 1080p monitor.

higher refresh rate is not a big factor or as noticeable benefit if you are not interested in gaming compared to the other two factors I listed which are more noticeable (bigger screen, higher dpi/resolution)

Another way of looking at it..
If you are using it for web browsing..
which would be more noticeable benefit you would see?

      -27 inch 4k monitor
      -27 inch 1080p 165Hz monitor

  • Tempted. Should I buy this or wait for the next sub-$300 S2721QS deal?

This would be for office work, in a sunny area, for use with a Mac.

The stand is kind of ugly. I'm also noting that the shipping time is quoting 19-26 August.

    • +1

I would never choose a 1080p over a 4K for office work. You can put the scaling to 200% and get the same real estate as the 1080p but it will look Apple retina sharp. Also the S2721QS is excellent with decent contrast ratio (1500:1 compared to 1000:1 on the 1080p) and good out-of-the-box colour accuracy. In a sunny area both will perform poorly though due to being IPS.

      • +1

I thought a bright IPS panel was meant to be good in the sun?

        • +1

Actually you're right, I had it the wrong way around. IPS performs poorly in a dark room because the poor contrast makes darker scenes look more grey. Brightness is fairly average on these monitors and VA can get just as bright while having vastly superior contrast ratio. Still I wouldn't choose a VA over an IPS because the advantages of IPS outweigh its poor contrast.

  • What is the resolution on the 27" ? is it 1440p ?

    • +1

Both are 1080p. You'll need to increase your budget for 1440p.

      • +2

        yeah I will pass.
        1440p is minimum.

  • -1

I just bought two Samsung T37F's (27") from Amazon at $223 each, they won't be used for gaming though mainly just WFH stuff so hopefully they'll be fine for that.

  • Anyone know if the https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/667832 will fit the 24" model?
    Cheers

    • Why? Does that lamp have some kind of mounting problem?

    • Can't say for 24" inch but it's perfect on my S2721DGF

  • Is the stand of the G2722HS the same as the S2721DGF?

  • -1

how is this for a second screen? over kill?

    • +2

If you only have one screen a second one can never be considered overkill.

    • +1

Yes & no. It's overkill that you don't need 165hz on your second screen since you won't be gaming on it. It's insufficient for a 2nd screen that it's only 1080p not 1440p or 4k which allows you to fit more documents/web browser on the screen at once than 1080p would. You are better off buying a cheap 1440p for around the same price that's only non-gaming only 60hz.

  • Should i upgrade from a 24” 60hz TN panel i feel like i don’t deserve it

    • depends

do you have the spare cash/budget to spend on it?

or do you need the money to pay for bills and food?

  • According to Dells website, the dimensions are as follows:

With stand (lowest position) - width: 61.16 cm - depth: 36.341 cm - height: 39.295 cm

Can someone please clarify the depth, as 36.341 cm doesn't sound right ??

  • -1

Hrmm that G3223Q at $849 is tempting…any go to to save a bit more? eBay vouchers or some such..

  • +1

Showing up as out of stock for me (21st July)

  • +1

I just upgraded from a 10 year old 1080p gaming monitor (1ms VA), to a 1440p non gaming monitor (4ms IPS) … the sharpness is miles ahead on the 1440p even when im only using 1080p as the source. I wanted IPS for better viewing angles and better color.

I can't tell the difference in input lag between 1ms and 4ms either. I swear all these high refresh rates are just marketing to milk the gaming industry of excess cash. If you think you need 120hz, 144hz, 160hz instead of 75hz fine … go for it, but I doubt any gamer will notice anything over 120hz and remember the higher you go the better GPU you need to match the hz to the frame rate to prevent tearing. ;-)

I wouldn't spend my money on 10 year old 1080p personally, I would also be looking for USB-C at the moment, I think it will be the universal plug of the future.

    • Best way to check how a monitor performs is to check UFO test. If there is any major ghosting (trailing ufo) or overshoot (double image ufo) then the monitor does not have good response times and is likely lying or using some trickery to slap <5ms on the box. As for refresh rate… I do notice 165Hz over 120Hz but it's subtle. 144Hz and 165Hz is basically indistinguishable though. I'd say refresh rates are very noticeable up to about 90Hz then it sorta drops off.

  • They should stop making these FHD screen, they are below standard monitors

    • +4

For productivity yeah. But many games on console still only render at 1080p in their performance modes. Also you will need a beefy PC to run the latest games at 1440p 165fps. There's still a place for 1080p gaming displays and the fact that you can now get 165Hz for $200 is great.

      • most people who game on console do it on big screen tv.

1080p is terrible for 27" monitor for daily general usage
the text is not as sharp as 24" and is pixelated.

also checked some websites and it don't look right on 27" at 1080p,
the text heading alignment don't look good.

  • +1

Supports 1080p 120Hz but no VRR on PS5

    Damn

    • Sadly that's a problem with many monitors. The VRR support on PS5 is very limited too as it only ranges from 48-120Hz which makes a 60fps game with performance problems easily fall out of the range. Xbox One and Series consoles have flawless VRR support with LFC and supports most monitors.

  • Can the G2422HS be mounted on a VESA dual monitor mount?
And is it overkill for just office work and web browsing, ie no gaming?

    • +1

165Hz is easy on the eyes even outside gaming and it has 100x100 VESA support.

  • how would it compare to a HP M24fw monitor?

  • how long is the shipping?
