Preparations for Tesla Model Y Delivery

So I have placed an order for the model Y based on an impulse.
Now that a delivery date has been confirmed, I am looking for tips on what preparations I should be looking into? e.g.
Insurance,
After market accessories,
Charging (I do not have solar at the moment).

Is there DLC or loot boxes you can buy for it?

    • +23

Subscription to seat heaters or "auto"pilot enhanced cruise control?
Cause who doesn't want an ongoing payment for something fitted to the vehicle?

    • +9

      The flex DLC.

    • +3

      Literally yes.

    • +1

There are rumors that steam will be coming to Tesla vehicles at some point.

      • -4

That point is when the batteries get punctured after you drive over debris on the road.

  • +154

You forgot your car's new YouTube channel, Instascam feed, ShitTok, SnapCrap and Fartbook pages. You will also need to get yourself a vanity number plate that lets everyone know how environmentally woke you are… Something like: LOL-01L, WAT-GAS or GAS-L0L should suffice…

And make sure you update every single forum you are a member of that you have ordered a Tesla.

    • +9

LOL-01L is taken in NSW, but they could have LO10IL or LO101L.

      • +3

He's an uber driver - I had him a few years ago. Believe he has a YouTube channel too šŸ¤£

    • Sorry, GAS-LOL has been taken already :)

Someone near me has MAV3R1CK, and it's constantly parked outside a gym that is targeted at (but not exclusively for) young women.

I'm guessing they look something like pre-hair implants Elon Musk.

      • +1

It's probably parked there because the owner has gotten himself in jail on account of #metoo

      • You mean this one?

        Exhibit A

    • +27

      W4NKR
      P3NUS
      JIZBOI
      CNTBOI

      all available in NSW

      • +9

Weird, thought they'd be taken by rusty Commodores by now.

      • I'll assume you that own all of these in another state.

    • +9

And its time to start lecturing people how much better Tesla is than other electric cars

      • +2

In Italian, enthusiastically, with accentuated hand gestures, while cruising around with autopilot engaged!

        • +1

This is a pet hate for me - the very name autopilot is so misleading and gives false confidence to its capabilities.

    • Most accurate AF comment on entire OZB history. Kudos.

  • +12

Its just a car. just treat it the same as all the other cars you have had.

    • +59

No man, it's a Tesla! You need to make sure that everyone knows about it and recognises the importance of it and how it's "not just another car", but something you can wank on about while driving like an 80 year old Camry driver. Take some examples from vegans and Crossfitters about how to work it into every conversation ever.

      • I don't think that was OP's point at all. The amount of cynicism and hostility in this thread is shocking. Most people on here would never be able to afford a Tesla and that's life, you know.

        • +1

Most can't afford a Tesla? Many dual cabs you see driving around cost more than base Tesla Y?

      • Green is not your colour.

    • +1

I did not think Tesla made cars that take same liquid fuel as all the other cars OP has had.

      • It does. There is a little boot at the front you fill with petrol just in case you need it. Tesla think of everything!

        • Yes, comes in handy, when you find cheap fuel for your other vehicle ….

      • No just tons of burnt coal to power it, so green.

  • +6

What power do you have at your house? if you have three phase you could look at your own wall connector that will supply 70ish km per hour.

    • +1

The home is single phase. And was shopping around for a Solar system before all the bad weather hit.

        • +4

3 phase will feed power you generate into other phases whilst you consume power on one, thus prioritising consumption from the grid more than your solar arrays.
Costing you more, reducing ROI from your PV investment, or forcing you to add consumption management at greater cost.

This is now how NET metering/billing works. The NET all all phases is combined to provide the resulting NET positive or negative consumption value.

I dont believe any grid providers support/allow gross metering anymore.

        • Good to know. Thanks.

      • Will you ever charge at home during the day?

        • +2

I am hoping WFH 2-3 days a week will continue for sometime.

        • -8

If using it each day and not returning enough to keep it topped up, it is best to have maximum PV generation and double the battery so there's enough stored to top off the car every night.

That requires more battery, more PV, more cost. Inversion, storage and charging losses are likely to 30-50%, so overall there is quite a bit of carbon impact to add to the carbon cost of building the car and its onboard battery. Add to that carbon from charging at peak and night-time, coal generation… euuuww!

For most people, it'd be better on the environment to have an old car IMHO

          • @resisting the urge: The energy required for an electric vehicle from coal generation is roughly as energy efficient as a fossil fuel vehicle with the fuel already in the tank, without accounting for all the extraction, refining and distribution costs.

To some extent, not making a new car is better, it the carbon emissions from an EV construction are largely recouped in the first year or a bit longer depending on usage and energy etc.

          • +6

            @resisting the urge:

Inversion, storage and charging losses are likely to 30-50%,

You're claiming solar system energy losses of 30-50% for DC to AC inversion, battery storage and DC to AC conversion for charging?
Want to back that up with any electrical engineering facts?

            • +5

@SBOB: Careful, donā€™t encourage facts in any Tesla thread.

            • -8

@SBOB: Are you suggesting you can store PV power in a battery with less than 15% loss (including inverting down to BMS voltage?) Because the transfer process (wall battery to car battery) would probably use that without even having to step voltages up or down. Then when you use it, you probably loose another 15%.

You can always look at what's on the market if you want to know. Ask the right questions, find the right data, map all the options, but don't expect it to be rosy, Or you can go down the rabbit hole and write a research paper if you like (maybe u can look one up that isn't too out of date). Feel free to post back what the efficiency involved in transferring Array voltages to battery voltages actually are if so!

I'd be nothing but happy to admit I'm a little high or low on these points. We needed to be smart about how we manage and produce nearly every type of energy, since the start of the industrial revolution

PV DC -> static electrolyte storage -> time in storage -> vehicular storage

              • +2

@resisting the urge: An EV running on power generated by a coal power station still produces less CO2 than a combustion engine car - especially an ā€œoldā€ car you claim would be better. Hybrid car may be better in that scenario though.

A vehicle ICE is incredibly inefficient and full of losses.

Edited to add: you can also buy ā€œgreenā€ electricity if minimising carbon output is your goal.
Iā€™ll also add, itā€™s possible to charge for free even if you donā€™t have solar at home. I know a number of Tesla owners that took it as a personal challenge to do so, without much inconvenience.

            • @SBOB: Hes not wrong for solar to AC (5-10%) then AC to DC to charge the tesla gets about 80% efficiency https://evse.com.au/blog/tesla-model-3-charging-efficiency-cā€¦

BUT if he gets solar and teh right charger its power free from the sun so who cares!

      • +1

Depending on your income and savings, growatt systems are best bang for buck still. Sunterra here in SA is doing 10Kw solar with 20.5Kw batteries for 16k. Thats roughly 100KM range free everyday for 9 odd months a year (not winter).

        • -1

Well a number of LGs were proven to combust and burn through concrete slabs et al. Not sure how well the Growatt's go, or the QA and testing effort they use on their electronics, chemistry, and software. Any one of which can end catastrophically. And every warranty claim that gets made costs the earth another volcanic qty of greenhouse gases.

          • +5

@resisting the urge: You sound a little anti renewable energy?

            • +1

@serpserpserp: Not at all, I invested in PV, but every time I buy anything I think about the impact it causes. Just encouraging others to do the same. A lot of new green tech is anything but green, it is just 'hopefully so' once they sort out the problems in years to come. Software and semiconductor design is notorious for being rushed to market, full of baked in faults, and very badly supported/maintained, even during warranty… it is really a matter of buyer beware.

          • +2

@resisting the urge: If this is so widely known could you point to any insurance companies that openly refuse to issue house insurance if you have a battery installed?

            • @Grunntt: They do profit from insuring things, you know.

Its just a risk model- you cannot assume something is good because they insure it. They insured British cars for decades despite all the troubles, and even to this day will happily insure any one of the notorious lemons made recently by GM, Ford, VAG, Merc, etc. despite their values being low and the manufacturers actively avoiding resolution of the fundamental design faults they made.

They've been insuring cars for decades and still get it wrong with them, Why would they be able to do any better with emerging tech?

      • Hold off on buying a home charger until you establish your usage patterns - then decide whether it is necessary, and how big to go.

Go to Youtube and type tesla delivery preparation

    https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=tesla+delivery+ā€¦

    • -3

That's an easy way to get a lot of USA based content which is irrelevant to Australia.

      • +20

type tesla delivery preparation Australia then

  • +34

This is what is considered an impulse buy? Sh1t I bought a new mouse and thought it was an impulse buy

I guess I better go buy a new house on impulse now

    • +2

Can happen. I bought one of the cars on impulse buy. Well, didn't go down well with the CFO at home the following morning.

    • -2

It was $350 to place the order, have not decided to proceed with the purchase yet.

      • +22

Then what, pray tell, is this thread about?

Your OP sounds like it's on the docks awaiting customs clearance and coming soon…

Waht is the proposed delivery date out of interest?

        • +1

Delivery estimated 4-6 weeks away. But can still back out without committing to the remaining purchase price.

          • +3

@athuntershill: Wow, even if it's double that, that's relatively quick.

            Interest piqued.

            • +1

@bmxr: Paper work have a VIN and June build date on it. So I'd say it won't be far off.
Therefore, a bit concerned about lack of insurance providers and other costs.

              • +1

@athuntershill: That's surprisingly quick, the wife has a model 3 on order since Dec last year and our delivery date is Aug or early Sep….

                • @xavster: Its the way Tesla does it. Holden, for example, built cars continuously, and delivered them in truckloads. Tesla builds RHD cars for Australia in batches and delivers them in shiploads about every three months. So you can wait forever if you put in your order just after a batch is built, or get your car quite quickly if you get it in while they're building the batch. Or you can get it really quick if what you want corresponds to a cancelled order in the last batch built and next shipload.

          • @athuntershill: well they can turn around and sell it again instantly so fair enough

      • +6

If it helps, the car is worth more the minute you drive it out of the dealership.

      • Well, if you decided not to, let me know. =)
I am buying car for my parents in law in the next 4 weeks, they want tesla but the wait is so long, I might need to settle for non-Tesla, sadly

      • -2

That not an impulse buy if can back out .. deposit of $350 is nothing can not believe they accept that , it obvious dealer just want ā€œconfirmed ordersā€ to show Tesla to secure cars!

Thanks be to God I retired out of the car game, I never excepted less then $1000-$2000!! Anybody giving minimal deposits usually want subject to great grandmother getting a job haha

    • -2

Don't feed it cheese, mice stink if they are fed cheese so I'm told.

  • +22

I reckon best delivery prep would be buying a calendar for the following year so you can keep putting in the new delivery date when they change it.

buy some super glue to glue all the shit back on it when it falls off

and buy a big chip to put on your shoulder so everyone knows you own a tesla

    • -2

VIN has been assigned, the car is manufactured and most likely now already on a boat coming to AU.

  • +4

Make sure the powerpoint near the driveway works! šŸ˜

  • +17

I am looking for tips on what preparations I should be looking into? e.g insurance

Proof that having money doesn't make you smart.

Are you really asking what prep work you need to do to take delivery of a vehicle? Good lord..

    • +23

No, its more about making sure everyone knows about it…

    • nah, it's just a Model Y, and considering OP is picking up soon, it wouldn't be the performance version too, therefore, still just a 5 figure money I won't treat them driving luxury car or such. All my neighbors driving 6figure cars yet i don't see them any smarter.

  • +1

A dog poo bin in the boot.

    • -3

I see what you did there. up vote for your effort.

  • +15

From reading the comments, step 1 would be to ask this question on a forum that isn't full of trolls.

    • People on ozb are generally extremely helpful but when you ask stupid questions like what to do when you buy a six figure car it's a bit like asking what the current price of TSLA shares are. You can easily find this out yourself or you should already know.

      • +7

People on ozb are generally extremely helpful

        when?

        • +2

I think they meant to say extremely judgemental and of course righteous

          • @gimme:

            judgemental and of course righteous

Not all OzBargainers are Tesla ownersā€¦

            • +2

@mapax: Yeah but most of them are bitter about something.

      • There is a exception, just don't ask any questions related to BMW :)

      • +15

        It's a perfectly legit query.

Home charging - use a power point? Install a charger? what brand?
Public charging - which ones do I use? Do I need to set up accounts?
Accessories - what do people use? What did people buy but later found unnecessary?
Connectivity - is there anything that needs to be done to enable updates over wifi? Setting up the phone app?
Any useful articles to read or videos to watch before delivery?

But it mentions Tesla, so instead the nutjobs decide to make an appearance.

        • +4

At least it's entertaining for a Friday.
Maybe I should have added … … top of the range, prepaid in full with bitcoins, booked in for custom paint job, and reno underway in my 8 car garage… …

      • +1

So this forum is full of trolls.

    freeeeeeee power

Forget every other topic of conversation that ever existed. Sport, politics, religion… all out the window. You will now use the word Tesla in every sentence.

      Tesla Tesla Tesla Tesla ?
      Tesla ?
      Tesla Tesla Tesla Tesla!
