Preparations for Tesla Model Y Delivery

So I have placed an order for the model Y based on an impulse.
Now that a delivery date has been confirmed, I am looking for tips on what preparations I should be looking into? e.g.
Insurance,
After market accessories,
Charging (I do not have solar at the moment).

  • Book a spot at Sydney dragway, that's what I would do.

    • OK, so no insurance then.

      • Insurance companies don't cover you for dragway nights anyway

  • based on an impulse.

that's a lie, you've been thinking about it for sometime, and decided to pull the trigger :)

    • Perhaps more FOMO when online order opened in June.

  • +3

join either TMC, FB Model Y group, or whirlpool thread. Heaps of information there already.

If you have a good sense of humour you should probably contact everyone you know and tell them that you’ve bought a Tesla and there’s a high likelihood that you will become a smug profanity that only finds humour in laughing at people too poor to buy a brand new ev.

  • +5

You’ll need to learn how to throw into every conversation that you drive a Tesla, and you cannot refer to your car as a “car” but a Tesla

    • +1

Throw in that your car Tesla doesn't need servicing.

      • And that it will pay for itself in 3 years…

      • doesn't need it but they'll charge you for it anyway lol

    • Even better if you drop the "a" and "the" and just call it Tesla, like any other member of the family

"I'm taking Tesla to the shops"
"I'll pick you up later, and I'll bring Tesla"
"I'm so glad you are in my life Tesla, you make me the happiest person in the world"

  • +16

    Floor mats
    Wall charger (obtain and install)
SSD for Tesla Sentry (something say 256-512GB IMO)
    Comprehensive insurance
A good tire inflator (you'll be doing this yourself given the car won't be getting serviced)
Paint protection and tint to be arranged
New toll RFID transponder and sticker

That probably covers most things you need.

Delaying solar installation is a big mistake. Wish I did mine sooner. It paid for itself in 3.5 years.

    • What sort of paint protection do u have or recommend, also think the front mud flaps is a must as paint damage has been reported without it.

@OP I’m just buying 3 things for now
      - type 2 cable to use public chargers
      - mud flaps
      - centre console trays

      • can recommend the mud flaps you bought?

        • Oh I just bought the one off Tesla store, but they do only for the front.

Great… More ugly cars on the road

    • I agree, looking dated rapidly.

      • I think in the pursuit of aerodynamics, lots of electric vehicles are focusing on practical design to achieve range extending aerodynamic performance. Some say that makes the cars look dated but personally I think they are made to just look … bland. Cool angles, grilles, vents, spoilers, lips or fenders that are in the mindset of current buyers as attractive visual features on a car are not going to improve aerodynamics for driving range so they all go.
On the flip side, I'm also sure the focus groups and marketing within the companies have decided that this can then be used to appeal to a broader consumer base.
Yes a Porsche Taycan or similar high-end EV can have the sporty look but they have the 'prestige', the buyers, the body shape (and the pricetag) to allow them to achieve this.

        • Then why does a GM EV1 which is more aerodynamic than the Tesla look more modern despite being more than 20 years old.

We have a model 3, bought it 12 months ago and have driven 47k km. We already had solar at home and 3-phase power. We had a plug put in by an elecrtrician for around $300 and use the Charge HQ App to ensure it only charges at home when the sun is shining. We have driven from the Sunshine Coast to Melb and return 3 times and all around our beautiful state…..never had range anxiety. Total running costs were spent on charging…less than $500 (for 47,000 km) at Tesla and Chargefox chargers when away from home. Best decision we ever made….oh we bought a boot liner and a dog hammock for the back seat.

    • $500 for 47,000 km of travel, nice!

Assuming heaps of $0 at home solar charging?

What inverter setup do you have?

      • +4

Yes lots of charging at home and when we drive through NSW, we use the free NRMA chargers. We also always stay at motels with free charging because that saves us time and money. We have 8.2 kW solar with a Fronius inverter. We often come across businesses or shopping centres that offer free charging too 😉 Given there has been so much negativity from people who don’t own a Tesla, I should remind everyone that it costs nothing to charge it from home, it is virtually free to run, makes no noise and it’s not polluting the environment. It drives like a dream…and then there’s the regular free Tesla updates that happen automatically and keep the technology in my car updated…I’m a 55 yr female not a car fanatic and it’s by far the best car I’ve ever owned.

        • I should remind everyone that it costs nothing to charge it from home

Please tell me how I can get free electricity at home?

Last I checked it cost me money to install a solar system and I also get paid to export excess solar generation back to the grid.

          • +1

@stewy: Correct the cost of your so called ‘free’ power is the value of the electricity should you sell it back to a retailer 8-10c kw/hr + capital cost of solar and charging infrastructure.

No such thing as a free lunch.

    • Smart move… We hired a m3 recently, which was the best driving experience I've ever had. I will never buy another ICE car again.

  • +4

    What nonsense post it this?

Buying a car u need to ask in forum for preparation to welcome it?

    • +1

      tesla is a cult

      full of idiots

there are plenty of actually good quality electric cars out there and the tesla isn't one of them

      • Very interested to hear why Tesla is not considered a good quality electric car.

        • -1

there are ample examples online with a quick google search

        • They are fine, and no EVs match them at the current price point. There’s just a lot of salty poor people that watch too much YouTube in here

  • +2

"An impulse". I'm convinced Tesla owners are the new woke vegan. How do you know if someone is vegan? Don't worry they will tell you. How do you know is someone owns a Tesla. Don't worry they will tell you.

  • +2

Sometimes I buy an ice cream on impulse.

    • +2

Sometimes I buy an ice cream on impulse.

Now don't leave us hanging. Do tell us what you do in preparation for bringing home said ice-cream.

      • Usually ruins my appetite and then I can’t eat dinner. Sometimes buying on impulse is a really bad idea. At least the icecream is a $6 regret not an $80,000 one

  • -1

Enjoy your subscriptions services in the future with Tesla.

  • I can't tell OzB general consensus opinion anymore. The sentiment from prior posts led me to feel that I should be getting myself a Tesla. Come OPs post, he's getting smashed. I better stick to a corolla.

    • I think Tesla is becoming increasingly on the nose.

      • Yeah but to who? OzB doesn't represent anyone.

        • +1

For starters me. Styling is very dated. Interior styling will eventually be horrifically dated. Anything with a screen seems to unmercifully show their age. Plus all the reports of abuse in the factories does not make me desire to own one.

          • +1

@Brick Tamland: Wait until you find about the conditions in the factories that make electronics, or the sweatshops that make your clothes.

            • @smartazz104: Yeah but Tesla makes a song and dance about how they are doing the right thing.

  • I think it is time to sell when the price is high

  • +5

Jesus that's a lot of hate for Tesla after a perfectly legitimate (albeit slightly boasting) inquiry.. would've gone with any (preferably cheapest) EV, but now the Telsas are even more tempting

  • +3

    A loud custom exhaust

  • +2

Well you've already got the "let the internet know I ordered an EV and I'm awesome" box ticked. It's a good start.

  • +5

    Buy twitter

  • Remember it's just a car. If you don't order new cars very often you get this sort of one-itis and you'll end up with accessories and garbage you don't need.

We did the same with our model 3 in 2019 in a moment of weakness and ended up with lots of Aliexpress garbage out of boredom. Just wait til the car arrives. Don't pass the time by buying stuff.

I've noticed the same behaviour from the Atto3 folks as well. Just relax.

    • Agreed. People seem to be buying so much junk for their Tesla's. Why?
Why do you need to buy a new floor mat when the car already comes with one unless that's what you've been doing with every car you have purchased in the past?
The amount of storage solution products people buy seems to be ridiculous also. How much crap do you have to store in your car on a daily basis to warrant it?

  • Mmmmm. It is only a car. Not a baby….

Ask the dealer what you may need… eg a parking space.

  • +1

irony isn't the Tesla factories powered by fossil fuel - directly and/or indirectly

  • +2

Flip it for an easy 10k profit or even more.

    • Tempting, can use the profit to pay for a nice Solar system.

  • +1

How long did you have to wait?

    • Those who ordered within an hour or two of the release date get the Y within 6 - 8 Weeks. All others will wait 6 months +. Tesla had a set number of the Y's made for AU for immediate shipment and they sold out within that hour or two on release.

    • Mid to late August according to the App.
Placed an order when this post first came up.

  • Does it come with MicroSD for the camera recordings, invest in decent quality high capacity memory cards and you can send the footage of the shit Sydney drivers to dashcams owners australia youtube.

  • -7

That must've been on an impulse. Any research would've led you to discover that Teslas are very poorly built cars.

    • Got any recommendations for quality built cars for around the same price range?

      • Does it have to be EV or anything?

I personally like the BMW 3 Series plug in hybrid.

        • ICE or EV, don't mind either. If you can recommend a few models i'll look into them :)

          • @Magicmannn: The Kia EV6 looks compelling for an EV.

The BMW 330e is very compelling. It's got a decent electric range plus efficient petrol engine for long distances. I think that this is better than EVs which carry around hundreds of kilos of lithium ion to have a decent range.

Teslas are truly horrible cars. Very poor build quality from a company more focused on hyping the stock price than making a decent product. And their designs are becoming long in the tooth.

            • @Illyria: How about ICEs in the same price range?

              • @Magicmannn: Are you interested in mid sized SUVs like the Model Y or are just interested in any car at this price point? Also, does it have to be a new car?

                • @Illyria: preferably a new car given the second hand car market costs as much, don't mind waiting. Similar to model Y as i'm trying to future proof myself (coming from a hatchback)

I had a look at the price of the ev6 on carsales, base model for 97k drive away is kinda steep when comparing to the price of a model y. Would you say 20k extra warranty the poor build quality?

            • @Illyria: Many people say they are great cars. Curious as to hear why they are horrible.

    • +3

Not the ones built in China, which is where Australian model Ys are built.

      • -3

Yes "made in China" is a synonym for quality LOL

        • +1

You've just shown everyone how little you know about EVs.

  • +1

    Lube?

  • +2

I would suggest running through this checklist before taking delivery

  • -4

Given your concerns around preparation I'm gonna assume you've bought a puppy dog and curiously named it "Tesla Model Y".

As such insurance is certainly something to consider depending on your ability to meet unexpected vet bills.

    As for after market accessories…

    • Food and water bowls.
    • Collar, harness, leash
    • Puppy gates
    • Soft bedding
    • Toys
    • Grooming tools

    Enjoy the new pet!

Recommend that you ensure that you have a powerpoint in the garage.

    Buy a Samsung T7 / 512GB for your dashcam/sentry.

Check with your sales reps that you are getting the u
    UMC with your vehicle.

Check that you have wifi in your garage, or otherwise intend to get the "premium connectivity" subscription.

Buy the mats, a tyre repair kit (inflation) and a puncture repair kit, and maybe a portable 12V tyre inflator (no need to go to servos any more).

  • Yes, you should insurance and some way to charge it. Not sure about after market accessories though.

  • weird flex but ok

  • We have one coming very soon too. Lots of good tips over at whirlpool. Probably better off checking there. Grab your accessories off Aliexpress.

  • how long ago did you place your order?

Cost of owning this car? 75k before on road costs and taxes, 3-5k for reasonable at home fast charging equipment so it doesn't take 18-24 hours to charge from normal wall socket. Full comprehensive insurance at 75k+ about 2K+ a year, about $756 a quarter to your home electrical bill assuming full charge once a night at current peak electricity prices or $9 a day for a 75kw battery in your tesla. Cost of decent solar system for your home forgetting solar doesn't work at night and you need a battery which will barely touch the sides of charging the 75kw battery in your car 7-10k. Decent battery costs 15k+ for power wall 2 with 13.5kwh capacity so you'll need more than one for both home + car.

The cost to our planet to manufacture your tesla + battery + solar because you've justified your tesla purchase as saving the planet because you believe in global warming and the planet will explode in 10 years even though the bank just lent you a million dollars over 30 years term for your home that they will never get back because of global warming and the world coming to a end. Even though you think you've done the right thing by buy a car that killed more trees, mined the silicon and components from the earth and smelted it all with coal fired power that you hate.

    Absolutely f@*kn priceless.

    • +6

      Absolutely f@*kn priceless.

When people apply logic to show the cost of a telsa like fully charging the car every night, but wouldn't use the same justification for petrol vehicles and refilling every day.
Insurance is a common cost for all vehicles.

I don't own a tesla but even I think your wall of text is "Absolutely f@*kn priceless"

      • -8

Thanks. Thing is once you do the maths your argument falls on its head. And I don't know anyone that fills a full tank of petrol every day. Nor do I know anyone that spends 30k in petrol in a 4 - 10 year period which is the warranty period of tesla car battery in Australia with a 70% retention of Battery capacity due to depletion over the warranty period lol, where a new car costs say 40k and a tesla 75k plus on roads plus all the other crap and costs involved to charge from home. To justify a tesla you would need to be spending over 35k +++ in fuel in a petrol car over this time frame plus add all the other necessary costs to that calculation.

Then add the inconvenience of charging your car looking line a twat for hours on end on your holiday journey while petrol cars pass you by laughing. Unless of course you just buy it to drive around the city in which case the maths is much worse. You can try and justify all you like but the maths don't add up.

        • +5

And I don't know anyone that fills a full tank of petrol every day

Yet make the assumption that an ev driver charges their car from empty every day.

It's ok to have strongly held opinions, not based in reality….just as long as you're ok to admit that's what they are :)

Again, not a telsa owner and far from an elon fan boy…(.e.g. I hope he's forced to buy twitter or pay a massive fee to get out of it…..)

I just don't see the logic behind rather outlandish or idiotic for or against claims of EVs.

        • +1

I have news for you. Maths doesn't seem to be your strong suit so don't try it again.
Writing an unnecessarily long post does seem to be your talent, however.
