  • soon going to be time to upgrade my Kids B350 PC's, (200ge and 2600)

  • I am out of touch with the latest. Current desktop an i5 4670k. Looking to upgrade with this AMD. What's a reasonably priced motherboard to go with this CPU. And will these be overclockable? TIA

Edit - appears to be easy to overclock according to Google search

    • +1

      get a B550 chipset based board for around $120 - $150

      • +1

i would say $120 is too much for the G version as it lacks pcie4 etc. I even got a $85 B550 (Gigabyte B550M DS3H) for my 5600x back then

        • +2

The downside for the cheaper boards are the lower heat tolerances. What someone saves on a budget motherboard, they may end up spending on extra cooling or shorter board life. And if they ever upgrade to a CPU that runs hotter, then the problem increases.

The guys on Hardware Unboxed did a good series of videos testing B550 boards that showed the high temperatures the cheaper boards easily reach, and the inevitable CPU throttling and system crashes

Obviously this all depends on how much and how often someone is thrashing their CPU, and also how hot the room that the PC is in gets

          • +1

@surethang: yeah, I selected mine after watching his review, one of the better boards with good VRM more than enough for 5600x. looks like the same motherboard is now $125 though. I think MSI B450 motar would be a better choice for 5600g if it is available now for a cheaper price as it lacks pcie4 anyway.

I got a Arctic Freezer 34 for $38 from an ebay deal. The bundled AMD cooler was hopeless and mine runs a lot cooler now.

        • +3

beware with any Gigabyte B550m with 4 ram slots,

There's only 3 PCIe slot all squeezed together, meaning if you have a larger GPU you won't have space to insert a WiFi card or other expansion card.

    • +9

With CPU, you can debate to get either 5600g or 5600.

5600G gives you intergrate GPU, but without PCIe 4.0, and have less L3 cache meaning less gaming performance.

5600 have better performance, PCIe 4.0, but no intergrate GPU.

      with Mobo, you can go:

Real Budget either Gigabyte B550m H, b550m s2h, or MSI B550M-A PRO, all gives you the very basic, 1 GPU, 1 WiFi slot, 2 RAM, 1M.2 and THATS IT, nothing else. (only have 1Gb Lan, and basic audio chip), I do have had issue with few gigabyte AMD board before, where the Mobo won't post, and you need to take out CPU to strain the power before it works again. out of the 3, S2H have the best power delivery (still low end ish, but slightly better in comparsion, the other 2 I won't recommend pair with any CPU more than 6 cores)

low to average MSI B550m Pro-VDH WiFi, this board is basically the copy paste to B550m Bazooka but with WiFi inbuilt. Power Delivery similar to B550m S2H which means up to 8 core, but with 4 ram slot (can be a bad thing though), audio and lan still basic.

average MSI B550m Mortar or ASUS TUF B550m Plus, Way better Power delivery, better lan/audio, with this you can later on put in 12 core, OC it and still be fine.. Though the price is kinda crap so don't buy unless it's in lower than $160 range. Consider this as low end premium board, where you won't see cut corners, but nothing superb.

above average MSI B550 Tomahawk. Same Power delivery as the 2 above, in full ATX, same as above no cut corners but nothing superb…. the cheapest board come with 6 layer PCBs which means you can OC dual rank memory higher than 3600Mbps, single rank up to 5000Mbps range, basically no memory OC frequency limitation anymore.

Even higher at this stage you should know what you want, if you don't you shouldn't buy a high end mobo.

if you are a memory overclocking nerd (like me), then 5600g have way superior memory controller which gives better frequency/tighter timings…. though you need to OC your memory Really Really high, to even compare with 5600 stock, and you can still mem OC 5600, 5600g will never win comparing to 5600 in gaming performance, either you OC both, or running stock with both.

      • How much would you suggest spending on a cooler since the 5600 doesn't come with one?

        • +1

I thought it does include one? anyway even if it does include a waith stealth, that cooler is pretty crap anyway….

My recommendation is any cheap 4 heat pipe cooler with 120mm fan.
I have had 2 5600x, both with PBO +200Mhz, 10x scalar and around -15 offset (varies between cores) with memory OCed to 3800 with tuned 2nd timings (which can make the CPU run hotter in some scenario), in stess test it never hit much over 80c. But keep in mind my thermal paste application, thermal paste used(7921), and mounting pressure technique is definitely above average, so you might want to factor a few degees here.

good example (there are so many choices I won't bother list everything):
DEEP COOL GAMMAXX GTE from Amazon

        • $30-50 is entry, they're mostly similar in performance. I would suggest counting the number of heatpipes, and check the height of the finstack as that's often a good indication of quality.

Starting from $65, you could just buy a Thermalright Peerless Assassin PA120/SE and have performance similar to the best air coolers out there (NH-D15).

An APU for $209, cooler fan included and delivered too - nice find op

  • +1

    Is this a good price?

Using a CPU comparison site this seems to be comparable to an i5-12400 yet 30% cheaper?

    • +3

This looks to be the lowest it has ever been. Good budget CPU, especially if you can't afford a GPU right now.

      • Thanks.

Is there any corners being cut on this G version compared to the standard 5600?

        • No ECC support.

        • +10

The 5600g clocks lower, has less L3 cache, and doesnt support pcie gen 4

If you dont intend on using the integrated graphics, the 5600 is well worth the extra $20

          • @AusDaniel: Thanks for the info! I will go with the standard 5600 then. Cheers.

        • Cache size is lower I believe, which can have impact on gaming when you are CPU bound. Whether you notice it or not is dependant on the user and games you play.

5600 is better if you don't need iGPU and it's not that much more expensive.

        • +1

According to passmark 5600G is about 10% slower than 5600 but you gain the iGPU if that matters. iGPU should be sufficient for casual gamer

        • +3

          5600G negatives
          No PCI gen 4
          Half the cache 5600/5600X 16 Vs 32

    • I have an i5-12400 and the stock cooler is the first one which just really didn't cut it for me, so you'd probably want to also add on the price of an aftermarket cooler in a 12400 comparison (in my case the Hyper 412R and I had to also order an LGA1700 adapter bracket).

How does this go for a NAS, I'm looking for a decent CPU for 4k hardware encoding maybe about 4-5 streams and tone mapping?

    • +5

Go for an Intel with iGPU so you can use quick sync

      • -1

        Thank you

    • +1

Or 5000 series non G for ECC support.

If you don't need quick sync

  • Anyone spotted some sub $90inc shipping b450 (4 dimms) boards?

    • Yes Amazon has the msi pro b550 for $88

  • At current price point at least get a 5600 or 5600x

  • I'm running an older Ryzen 2600 on a B350 board and really tempted by some of these newer Ryzen deals, but trying to hold out for Zen 4 (Hopefully not longer than a year or two away from a decent deal on a Ryzen 7600!)

    • +1

If you are waiting for Zen 4 you will need to get a new mobo & new ram as well. They are moving the CPU to the AM5 socket and DDR5 ram.

      • Yeah, hopefully DDR5 RAM sticks will be cheaper in a year or two :O

  • Is 5600G better than 5600?

    • +1

it's a little slower with decent integrated graphics.

    • +1

If you need integrated graphics it's worth the price. If you have discrete graphics it'll be less performing (5600G) on the more demanding cpu tasks over 5600

  • What motherboard would you recommend?
The only thing I need later on is maybe a graphics card. (3 monitors, league of legends and light gaming etc)

Already have a mac for video editing. Thanks

Also need a decent case with a lot of front panel ports

Kind of wanna do Mini-ITX coz I have 128gb sodimm ram

    • What motherboard would you recommend?

      here

    • Standard Mini ITX motherboards still use standard DIMM RAMs. It is only the specialised/non-standard small form factor
barebone systems (eg ASRock DeskMini) that uses SODIMMs, of which already come with its own motherboards (as barebone systems).
