  • Anyone have feedback on build quality, maybe extending an opinion on comparison to XPS and MacBook?

    • +6

      The quality is awesome !
      Same as any big brand

      • +4

Better than big brand to be honest

      • +4

        Better than most big brands
Walk into any JB. 80% are plastic.
        Except apple, Ms
        This is an excellent laptop.

I have this and my partner has a Dell XPS 13 and a Macbook Pro. The Huawei is pretty good, there's some chassis and display flex but overall not bad. The Dell and Macbook are definitely superior though, much more solid and sturdy. Also better keyboards (imo) than the Huawei.

Honestly though, with these specs at this price, I don't think you'll be at all disappointed with this laptop. I would just be aware that they've released a new model with 2022 specs, if that matters to you.

They're still on 11th gen like this model. If they switched to 12th gen I would consider upgrading.

I wonder how they get around the trade ban. I would have thought it'd affect their ability to deal with Intel and MS.

I have the 2018 model. Build quality is excellent, it feels solid just like the XPS13 and MacBooks*. The screen is really good - sharp and bright with good colours. The touchpad is large and works well. Webcam is quite low down but I don't use it much so it doesn't bother me.

Keyboard feel is of course subjective, but IMHO it has a really good keyboard. I've used multiple ThinkPads and a Surface Book before this and I'm very happy with the keyboard feel. I'm a really picky keyboard user too.

*the MacBook is thicker, it'll feel more solid.

The spec is great, but the battery life is significantly behind all of its competitors which is a deal breaker for me https://au.pcmag.com/laptops/86846/huawei-matebook-x-pro-202…

    • The cost of getting 13.9" vs 13.3 & 50% more pixels on touch screen. It has decent battery life for the price & specs.
I would only wait on 12+ Gen (iGen 13 is around the corner) & there will be more competition from others)

That camera… that damn camera. Before Covid, wouldn't have bothered me. But with remote working beling so prominent, it's just about a deal breaker.

  • I bought one of these recently and subsequently returned it due to a horribly 'warm' screen. Whites looked yellow. I was comparing it to the 2018 model which I believe has the same panel.

Maybe I just got a dud?

    • Change settings

      • Even setting everything to the coolest possible settings, I couldn't get whites to render as well as my 2018, which was on the default temperature.

Trust me when I say that I went through every possible permutation of settings.

    That's a shameless copy of a Macbook.

    • +1

      So do Intel NUC M15.

    • +4

All cars have doors and wheels. You cannot say Huawei copied MacBook as even Apple hasn't declared that yet.

    • Good.

    Ahh, the classic everyone-copies-Apple comment.

Where did Apple's designs come from? :)

    • +3

      Kazakhstan:
"…primary ancestor of most cultivars of the domesticated apple to be the ancient apple tree: Malus sieversii. There used to be some controversy over this, but it has since been confirmed, through detailed DNA testing, and a full sequencing of the genome, as recently as 2010.

Malus sieversii is a wild apple, native to Central Asia, specifically to the Tian Shan Mountains of Kazakhstan, where they have been growing over millions of years and where they can still be found fruiting today."

  • Does this notebook run hot? My dell latitude runs hot and it is very unpleasant.

Does it come with spyware? I don’t want any overseas gov looking at my browsing history 🫣

    • +5

Just download win 11 from Microsoft and do a "clean" reinstall if you scare that much. Oh wait, you are exposed to Google or Microsoft anyways unless they are not "overseas" company.

      • -1

How naive. Google or MS are not HQed in a country who takes away basic human rights.

        • Mahalo was talking about spyware and overseas governments spying, not human rights.

Of course China has a terrible human rights record, but when it comes to spying capabilities, the US probably comes out on top.

    • +1

Then don't buy 'merican products. They are the best at spying (Merkel, & the rest ;) Pitty iPay users believe in privacy & deceptive iMarketing

who else will keep world order? It's a necessary evil

        • Come on man. Forced labor is of cause evil, Bombing people is not a necessary evil

    Lenovo deals were better

  • They take bite size pay (aka shark pay) so that's even better spread it over 99 payments no fees no interest

  • Anybody knows if this is good for watching movies? And does the battery last? I'm a basic user

    • +2

This laptop is more oriented to office users with a 3:2 aspect ratio screen. Watching movies is better served by 16:9 aspect ratio screen.

I'd suggest ASUS ZenBook UM3402 with a 2.8k 90Hz OLED screen. good for watching movies. The 75WHrs battery is reasonable large for 14" laptop. Currently, $1263.20 after 20% off.

    • From experience with my ThinkPad X1 Titanium, 3:2 ratio IPS displays are pretty awful for watching movies, its more of a productivity thing. Huge bezels if you don't zoom in, or if you zoom in you lose 40% of the action

  • Bluetooth Bluetooth 5.1

If this is running an AX201 or similar, I believe they are 5.2 certified now. (I'm just assuming here, since there's an Intel cpu)

    Screen Size 13.9” 3K LTPS touchscreen (3000 × 2000), 450 nits, 100% sRGB colour gamut

That's not a common screen size. I imagine panel replacement could be complicated in the long-run if you drop it. (Please don't drop the laptop)

    Fingerprint power button

No Linux support for the one used here, outside of a few proof-of-concepts. :(

  • I can see it has 16 GB of RAM. Anyone know how many slots and max capacity? Thanks

    • +2

It's a thin laptop so it'd be soldered in. Not enough clearance for RAM slots.

  • +1

Coming from a 16:9 XPS 13 I love the 3:2 ratio. Just feels more substantial, less squashed. 14 inches is really nice.
We have 2 XPS 13 in the house, they are great laptops too but i keep coming back to the MBXP even though it's 2018 (i7/16gb holding up pretty well). The latest XPS and XPS Plus are great too.
I was going to upgrade to this (2021) as it is great value for the spec and quality. But decided to wait for (hopefully) and equivalent deal on the 2022 next year as I dont want the double chin cam anymore.
Exceptional buy IMO. Ticks all the laptop boxes for me, spec, quality, price, screen, size, weight, form factor. Just not the web cam (anymore) for me.

edit: forgot the keyboard is very nice to type on, durable. The trackpack also pretty good, nice and big.

I am not convinced the Microsoft ebay store is actually 100% Microsoft though…

      Don't worry, it is.

      • thanks

    Grabbed the last one :)

  • Do these have the same return policy as buying from Microsoft direct - i.e. I can try it out and free return in original packaging if I am not happy with it?

There is 30day free return with eBay plus
