Damn, Wera tools are usually well north of 300.

  • +6

Make sure you check the country of origin on wera tools. While they used to be manufactured in Germany under very high standards, nowadays there are also eastern European manufactured ones that absolutely don't meet the quality

    • +3

Can confirm that the Wera Tool from Prime Day were Made in Czech Republic.

      • +1

I haven’t seen the QA on that particular Wera lineup, but they have a reputation to uphold, and will be particularly conscious of what happened to Stanley when they offshored to China.

They’d have a good choice of manufacturers in Czechia too - 40% of their population are employed in the sector, and their automotive sector is particularly well regarded.

        • Prusa research is there too, rock solid 3d printers.

    • So you believe this set that is Made in Czech Republic is nowhere near as good then?

      • I have no idea about this specific set but I know that some are made outside of Germany and you don't really want those ones.

        • +4

Do you have examples of the items made outside of Germany that are poor quality?
I've only gotten the ones made in Czechia and the quality is very good so wanting to know how much better the German ones are.

          • @sobriety22: The Wera Czech factory is Wera owned, it's not 3rd party, I've been aware of this but never looked at specific factory that my wera tools come from, wera claim they do 97% of the manufacturing which would seem about right as they don't smelt steel.

My knipex is all made in Germany, but companies like Gedore now make in Taiwan also, my Stahlewille is Germany, but their ratchet ring spanners are rebadged taiwan made.

            • +1

@garage sale: Not all Knipex are made by Knipex themselves. For example their Electricians' Shears are made by another Italy company called Fumasi

        • +1

It’s usually polite to at least provide some analysis and research if you can’t speak for experience. Even an anecdotal story can go a long way.

      • +9

This guy doesn't know what he's talking about. Wera own their own factory in the Czech Republic (not outsourced), and they've been manufacturing most of their stuff there for over a decade. It is not a new thing, and you're not going to find a "made in Germany" equivalent of this set.

        • well, someone doesn't

    • Looked up the barcode and found the item listed on Element14 which states the COO is indeed Czech Republic

      • +1

It even says Czech Republic on the Amazon page.

    • +1

I always thought Wera was a German company but manufactured in the Czech Republic?

All my Wera stuff in the last 5 years has been made there and it’s been brilliant.

Bunnings also stoke Wera, so you could also possibly price match (assuming they carry this).

      • -1

Unfortunately more and more are manufactured outside of Germany nowadays. Hasn't been always the case.

      • +2

Bunnings don't stock this, they only have a very small range of Wera products.
I have lots of Wera sets and they are all Czechia made. Agreed, they are very well made tools.

        • +1

They rarely have them on the shelves too - have to ask behind the counter.

They’re the codeine of hand tools.

      • +1

I have some Wera drivers from 12 years ago made in Czech. Now rocking a layer of engine oil and grease patina. Still in a good condition, green bits in handle didn't melt as I predicted.

    • +1

They've been manufacturing outside of Germany, and specifically in their own factory in the Czech Republic for ages - it is not a recent thing at all.

Like well over a decade at least.

      • I have left Europe in 2008, iirc back then all was made in Germany

    • Marketing tricks ;) If they were manufactured in Germany they would last >100 years … but you won't - you've overcapitalised.
Most brands now cut costs & manufacture in other places. It's not just brand reliability but logistics & optimal value for money.
We are not rich as before & worse is coming - victims of consumerism :(
eg. iPhones are produced in China because of the best supply chain & the best programmers are there (they admitted).

      • Yet somehow the European car market is still quite strong (not criticising you just saying). Know their cars are expensive here but over there, they're a lot more reasonable and common. Plenty of countries have outsourced manufacturing. China probably produces the best electronics in the world (on mass production), they also probably produce the some of worst too. But I don't think we can expect an Aussie electronics company to come up with a great phone. On the other hand they do specialise in areas and do a really good job (particularly mining) like with Red Arc, Rhode microphones or even Cochlear

Thanks! Was looking at some reviews of that zyclops ratchet when the AmazonAU page refreshed the price to 196. Was about to give up the buy when I noticed they still had the UK offering under the wishlist with the 20% of buy 2 deal so nabbed it quick. Now the AU page shows 317!

  • +2

    Made in Germany?

    Czech!

    • Ok, I will Check once receiving the order :D

  • +3

May I know what you guys use this for ? , is this mainly for Electrician ?

    Asking for advice.

    Thanks

    • +4

Appears so. The screwdrivers are insulated and would be difficult to get good torque on due to their narrow body. I love wera but its not for me.

I'd get more use out of something like this:
      https://www.amazon.com.au/Wera-056490-Tool-Check-Ratchet-Soc…

      • The handle on that kit looks really small tho, do you have experience on it ?

        • +2

I have two of the 817 VDE screwdriver handles in a separate kit to go with the bladed / interchangeable tips. They're not tiny and you can get a good grip on them but they're definitely designed for electrical work and more precise jobs and not for wrenching on.

        • +1

i have the above, and yeah, the handle is a bit small - but the tools in this kit work perfect with this: https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B0047KXA6U?m=A3JCEYBC5L8UJ8&ref…

          • @productred: The small metal bits will work with this but the red insulated blades will not. The bladed VDE tips only work with the matching 817 handle. I just tried the VDE in the 1/4'' drive and it doesn't fit, they're 8.95mm flat to flat

        • +2

I bought this mini kit from Bunnings years ago (quick check and doesn't look like they carry it anymore) for about $120 on trade discount (~5%).
The fact that you can fit a screwdriver/torx/hex bit straight into the head of the tool without an adapter makes it perfect for squeezing into tight spaces and is pretty much the whole reason I got it. If the naked bit fits with a bit of room to spare, the tool will fit too.
Only times this has failed me is when I needed a 2.5mm Hex tip for something, or I needed a longer handle to get a better angle on hard to reach screws.

      • +3

        Am I missing something?

The red screw driver bits insert into the red and yellow don't they?

        • yup they do, you change the whole shaft instead of the usual just change the tips/bits

        • +1

Yes, it is insulated, so mainly the market target is Electrician

        • wow ok, my mistake.

    • -2

yes, you pay a premium for the VDE insulation certification …. I don't need anything above 240v so don't like to pay for the VDE certification.

      • +4

        Ok so just to clarify;
        VDE is tested to 10,000VAC
        Certified to 1000v

Tested not to BURN or degrade insulation to after being CRUSHED, COLD

        https://wihausa.tools/what-are-vde-certified-tools/

        THE HANDLE IS VDE
        THE BITS ARE VDE

This means they are DOUBLE insulated…

You only need protection in case of FAULT CURRENT or voltage… Meaning, unexpected conditions.

240v protection is not what you think you need.

AIR is an effective insulator against 240v

  • +3

Czech manufacturing is far better than German anyway in my experience.

    • +1

+1 to that. at least it is on par. This week my Bosch serie 8 machine made me reevaluate my beliefs too…
same goes to BMWs assembled in Russia, that were widely believed to be inferior, it turned out the quality was better in Kaliningrad plant.

      • What happened this week….

        • +1

it decided that it is gonna retire after a warranty period…

  • Not sure how the Op got $136, my one come up as $138.10

    • Price is automatically converted from pounds I'm guessing, so adjusts constantly

    • same, ordered

    • +4

Comes to $136.69 for the tools.
It's an extra $1.41 for the candies to get the 20%.

  • +1

Finally! Have been waiting on getting a good set to pop in the trunk of the car. This stuff is always handy.

    Cheers OP.

  • Woohoo, can finally replace my bulky ass tool set kit. Thanks OP

  • +11

I didnt really need the candy, so I bought ~$200 of knipex tools instead.

  • All gone at this price unfortunately. I saw this yesterday and should have pulled the trigger.

Plenty of other Wera and Knipex stuff availabel though.

  • Got one, thanks OP, love a sneaky deal ❤️ Had my eye on this set too. Pretty versatile

  • +1

Ordered. Thanks. Sadly the candy is shipping separately 😭 what a waste of carbon.

    • Just got shipping notification for the candy… tools over a month away

  • Price has dropped further 😂

  • +2

Got the kit plus some cheap lollies to get the total price for both items down to $137.14 after the 20% discount

I ordered when it said in stock but still says Aug-Sep delivery

    • +2

It's Amazon, it usually arrives well before then.

  • Thanks OP.

  • +2

Bought one each for my sons. Will give to them when they are older.

  • Nice quality, but the completeness as a tool kit is average in my opinion.

    • Completeness for what task? Obviously not targeted to a home use/car, it's an electrical service kit, with most things you'll need in one small kit.

      • Well first thing youll need for electrics is sidecutters for a start. Better hope there aren't any nuts holding on the instruments that are 12mm or 14mm because a socket won't work.

        • I'd suggest this is for a maintenance / industrial setting. Well thats what ill use it for. Needle nose get way more use than my sidecutters.
I've had the ratchet in another kit and stood up well to years of use. The joker 10/13 spanner in this will complement it well.

  • Going to throw this one in the car!

  • My set has been shipped.

I’m not an advocate of sidcrhrome but nothing beats the nano set here:
    Eg;
    https://sydneytools.com.au/product/sidchrome-scmt12120-38pce…

This post is a set is for electricians who may encounter LIVE apparatus.
It will not replace my Sidchrome Nano but my bag is lighter and safer with this set.
It won’t save me money but will save me time/weight/risk of electric shock, burns loss of time, function of appendages in the event of a short circuit.

I did most of my apprenticeship working on LIVE equipment such as traffic signals or 24/7 production line industrial equipment.
Things are done different now, but for the extra cost, it will be worth it.

Sidchrome Nano is the best for every situation otherwise

    • In the shed I have a little box with a Teng bit set plus some SP bits, and a Snap on bit spanner, there's also two pairs of pliers. This seems to get used a lot, especially now I own a Ktm which has lots of torx screws.
For in the house I've put together a little box from Supercheap, which I think originally was a wallet style kit. It's got a nice big Stanley shifting spanner and all up owes me about 120.

      • Yep, the 790 is nearly all Torx bits….

  • Back in-stock at link now at $177.88 and the buy 2, save 20% still applying. So still good value.
It's a good kit for maintenance of domestic appliances and similar. Would get it if starting to build a collection of high quality tools.

The people pontificating about quality differences because made in Czech Rep and not Germany, are from my experience with Czech made products from German companies are well wide of the mark. But hey wouldn't be an internet forum without hot takes would it…

  • Mine just came. Nice bit of kit!

  • My parcel was lost , "We're very sorry that your delivery is so late. Although it may still arrive, you can request a refund now."
