Jumping through hoops to get this price

    • +2

There are tons of deals where we had to jump through more hoops than this

    • +6

Barely. Applying a discount code and purchasing with gift cards is pretty standard.. $134 is a pretty good price for simply entering a discount code either way :)

    shuckable ?

  • Is seagate reliable for portable HDD?

    • +2

I think you'll get mix reviews same as WD

      • I put them 1-2 notches above WD.
And for Mac users, Samsung has an agreement for a free software for NTFS support (Paragon) but the drivers only work for Samsung/SeaGate. Pretty handy, plug n play.

WD had one, but it's old and spotty. So they're not really supported on Mac, unless you buy the original Paragon from their website.

No such thing as a reliable HDD. They ALL fail. Make sure you have a backup of your backup.

      • +2

I think they're asking what the chances are of it lasting more than a year

No Seagate has a really bad record when it comes to reliability of their storage devices. Personal experience is the same as well. Go for WD if you want yua HDD to last longer

      • +2

All portable hard drives are somewhat unreliable, but it's still rare to have issues. WD have soldered on USB ports so recovery is nearly impossible.

I have a small USFF PC (the dell optiplex) that is always on and connected to the network. Is it okay if I leave this portable HDD plugged into it so I can use it as a 24/7 Nas (after mapping the network drive)?

I don't use it regularly, its more for transfering photos and taking backups and syncing files so that it will be avaliable for all computers on the network (without buying an actual Nas).

    • These 2.5 inch drives are better used as cold storage.

    • Yes, I've done it and it works well.

Just a heads up, if you convert the OptiPlex as a NAS then you MAY have problems with external storage/sleep function. Because the system can't read the HDD directly, as the USB Hub can get in the way, which can get annoying (unplug/plug the cord is not a solution if you're remote).

So an easy solution I found was to disconnect the DVD Writer/Disc Drive, and use the SATA cable to connect it to the "shucked" HDD. Then it reads natively.

But honestly, the OptiPlex are better used as a HTPC, there are better solutions if you want to have your NAS/personal cloud. More informed members here can help you out.

    • The really small ones? Don't they have a 2.5in drive bay as well as the m.2 slot? Could probably just shuck it and connect it up internally.

Non-Prime member can get the deal too.

      • ahh. wasnt sure so qualified it just in case

    • pooh, payed shipping at JB. you snooze you win.

    • I have Prime and it's listed as $149. Did they increase the price? Camelcamel says it was never $134

was an extra $14 off yesterday via check box while JB's code was valid. check box gone now.

  • I did the gift card thing but it's not working in check out?

    • +1

Where are you entering it, in the payment section or trying to use as a gift card?

It's meant to be used like a payment card.

      • This

      • I did use it as a payment card kept getting rejected. All good I worked it out in the end (see my comment below).

    • you might have to convert the gift card to a JB HIFI online gift card. I had to do this with the HER/HIM card

      • Yeah I converted to a JB card. Just eagerly awaiting the emails now

        • Surprised it was not instant

          • @Saltywarden: Yeah same, it took 20 mins for the $100 and 15 mins for the $20. The store I wanted to C&C sold out as well by the time I got them. Can't complain though managed to get a saving in the end.

Would warn to stay off Seagate due to their notorious reliability issues

    • +1

      Computer says no.

    • [All hard drive vendors] has entered the chat.

  • I knew this would happen, just got 3x of the One Touch 5tbs delivered from Prime day (UK stock).

Had been waiting 3 months for them to drop, thought it might be xmas before the next price adjustment.

  • Amazon are price matching the 10% JB price. Plus free delivery, beats click and collect or $5.99 delivery.

  • Not bad I picked up a 5TB WD XBOX drive from officeworks for $129 last week

    • +1

      Same, last one too 0.o

      • That’s awesome, right place and right time as they were not online (Instore clearance)

    • +1

Except if the usb controller dies you can't open the case and plug the drive in like you can with Seagate.

      • Yes, had that happen to one of my 4tb Seagate drives and just popped it into a enclosure - https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/703040 - deal says expired but it's still available.

Gave my HDD a second life for $10.

        • Do youk now if that'll work for the 3.5" (90mm) drives?

It says it does the 2.5"/50mm drives but if it's only just the plastic case I'm happy to crack it open to get a cheap sata drive adaptor.

          • @lancesta: Maybe someone else knows the answer to that. I Just checked the box and the controller does come out but don't know if it's a fit for your purpose.

I'm sure you can get what you're looking for on ebay. But it's too long since I did it to recall the details.

            • @JH100: All good. I can definitely get one off eBay, just thought this was a good price

  • Would this be good to use to expand reolink NVR storage capacity?

  • Anyone think this drive is suitable for use shucked in Synology NAS? Thinking of using 2 of them for their SHR, just not sure if I should use 3.5" drive or the 2.5" drive is ok? Mostly for backup and some shared folder in the network.

  • Damn I totally screwed this one up. Missed the deadline by 8mins (thought it was all of July) and bought the wrong card. Got a student one instead of the home one.

  • Any suggestions for bang for your buck portable ssds
