Welp, Hifiman has dropped the price of the he1000 v2 substantially on amazon. Cheaper than $4500 offerings from minidisc, addicted to audio etc.

Improves upon arya in imaging performance and timbre. Immaculate details, can even compete with electrostatics.

I'd still get the arya, but if you're looking at this post you probably don't care about price, ignoring the fact that you are on ozbargain.

Woah, hey big spender! I use earphones I got for free from an airline.

When you consider the value proposition of free earphones, nothing else makes sense.

      • +7

Hey, no need to look down on the less fortunate. Besides, s/he could be a millionaire and still not see the value in any headphones even worth $10.

        • -8

How was that looking down? It would be madness for someone who couldn’t afford them to buy them

          • @Icecold5000: Eh, maybe I got in my feelings but it didn't read as neutral or positive.

            • @E4xtream: Being poor is the lived reality for many of us unfortunately. Unless you’re a Buddhist monk there is no positive

    • are those a koss ksc75 clone? they sure look like it

    • I can actually hear those crackle from here

  • Geez thanks guys, now my oppo pm-1's feel like cheap garbage

    Better hurry, only 12 left!

I have one of these. I chose not to buy the HE1000se or use the 'upgrade' option on the Hifiman website. They have pleather earpads which fell apart on me, I expected real leather like the competition in that price bracket. The wood isn't nice and has gap fillers and a cheap plastic element.

The only saving grace is that the HE1000 series do sound fantastic. It has a powerful bass as it's a planer magnetic but doesn't take away from the clarity. Not fatiguing. Open sound stage. Not neutral and more on the enjoyable side. The sound is absolutely audiophile quality, the build is … Hifiman.

I'm waiting to see if Focal will release a Utopia successor as I'm interested to get that.

      • +6

pleather….. cheap plastic parts.. and gap fillers…. on a 3k pair of headphones, this is insane.

      • Thanks for your feedback.

      • +1

Pleather was likely used for acoustic reasons. Leather increases bass significantly

        • +2

The outside is pleather. I kept the headphones stored in the box with dessicant and in a controlled environment. I took it out after about a year and then when I touched the pleather it just disintegrated. The surface against the skin is fabric. Different companies change that material that touches the skin into things such as velour as that does impact on sound quality. However, using pleasure on the outside is just not good for headphones of this calibre. For example the Focal Utopia uses a carbon fibre yoke and real leather. The build quality of Focal is impeccable.

          • @Eatslikeacat: Again, the external material of the earpads does play a role in acoustics. Have you tried contacting hifiman for a replacement? I've heard people have received free earpads upon request before

            • @zjz93: I've had that suggested before. However, it's a lot of effort for a problem that shouldn't exist and that will re-occur. These types of headphones should last a long time and are often handed down to the next generation. I doubt that pleather external material makes a huge difference otherwise other headphones in that price bracket would use them. The Sennheisers have velour, although my first HD800 velour was a bit stinky out of a sealed box, the velour just gets dirty and worn over time. The Audeze LCD-3 and LCD-4 have leather. The Focal Utopias have leather. I even had the HE1000 v1 once upon a time. The pivot joint between the headband and the earcups were metal on metal and they got dust into them and started grinding and caused a bit to chip off. So in the HE1000 v2 they put a bit of Teflon in between. I gave Hifiman a go, they sound great but I'm not a fan of their build quality. I can't see pleather as a good design choice for headphones of that calibre.

for those savvy, just use a freight forwarder service (literally dozens to choose from). could easily declare this as ~$200 headphones, shipping should only run about $20.

OK but then again anyone even considering $4000 headphones in the first place probably ain't giving a shit about $1000 or so.

This is one of the best headphone that I have ever heard. Great soundstage - wide and tall. Good enough bass for planar. The mid and treble is just right with excellent timbre. So comfortable to wear. There is no perfect headphone and this one is an excellent all rounder in achieving at less 80% of what is possible in almost all categories.

    • +3

what's 100% of what is possible? will it give me eargasm every time I use it? every time = 100%

      • +8

will it give me eargasm every time I use it?

Yes.Countless ear babies have been spawned using these headphones.

      • +1

20% of the time you listen to shit music. It's not the headphones fault

    • I've listened to Sennheiser HE1 phones. Look them up, they're exxy. I have good ears. With well produced music they're spectacular there's no doubt. But I've listened to them back-to-back with phones that cost less than 10% (still costly!) of these homewreckers which exhibit no discernible difference in sound quality across their metrics.

While it can be argued that you're paying hard for a slice of design and manufacturing art you have to ask yourself what is it that matters the most. For me it's sound and durability. If there was a aurally quantifiable advantage to me of the most costly headphones I'd have them, no doubt about it. Wife out, headphones in.

The simple fact is with my good ears 5-10% of the possible financial outlay provides pretty much 100% of the possible listening experience. It all ends there.

      • +3

You're definitely paying for manual research and work by high level experts as you go further and further up.

The HE-1 is a benchmark headphone, a product that exists to set a target to reach for as technology and manufacturing evolves over time.

That's why it exists, and no one should be ever recommending it to own unless you're in the business of researching sound, whether that be in manufacturing, research, or retail.

Headphone wise, there is a lot to be had and cherished from $150 through to about $3500, but as you stretch past $500, you really need to know what you're looking for, and have actually demo'd a lot.

We're seeing a lot great products start to dip into the bottom of mid-fi, and this price drop reflects improvements in automating manufacturing, assembly, and testing.

It's amazing to experience what $250-$700 can get you now, and that will accelerate going forward.

      • What's that headphone that costed 10% of the HE1?

  • -1

Is this the one that applies electromagnetic brain stimulation?

    • Yes and in orgasmic proportion. It will bring out the goose bumps.

  • -4

    Arya? Racist headphones?

    • +5

The Nazis took the things that were great elsewhere in the world to make themselves matter. If you are referring to Aryan race it's not what the Nazis described. Aryans are actually Persians. The India/Afghanistan/Iran area was once referred to as Aryana. The Afghan national airline is even today called Aryana. There are many in that region that refer to their ethnicity as Aryans.

      • To make themselves matter? Lol NLM ✊🏻

        • Maybe lol

It was the ultimate cultural appropriation. They took very historic and meaningful symbols and descriptions of other races, cultures and religions that were recognisable but not well understood in Europe and put their own spin to give themselves relevance. Otherwise they were a group of nobodies.

          • @[Deactivated]: Name 3 besides the reversed swastika

What do you mean a group of nobodies?!

            • @the cringe: This whole discussion was about one of those or did you miss that? But here you go:

              1. The Heig Siegel or Der Deutsche Grub - the salute was taken from the Romans by the Italian Fascists then the Nazis. Look at Jacques-Louis David painting Oath of the Horatii created in 1784. The Romans are using it.

              2. They didn't invent fascism. It was the Italians (Moussolini) that established it and the Nazi seeing how powerful it had been for them made it their ideology. Also saw it as forming an alliance with the old Romans.

              3. They used flames and torch lighting in all their propaganda which was a ritual of the Greeks, Zoroastrians and Hindus.

              4. The crossed hammer and sword I shouldn't have to tell you where that came from.

              5. The Celtic Cross used on their uniforms came from Ireland.

              6. The skull or Totenkopft on the rings and other insignia. I'm sure you know where else that's appeared historically. Haar Haar. But really it's an international symbol.

              7. Black as the uniform colour. The nazi party were known as the brown shirts. That was their colour until they adopted the Italian fascist party's black shirts. But even before the Italians ancient powerful armies in the middle east and south East Asia have traditionally used that colour.

              8. The German imperial eagle is the symbol of the Holy Roman Empire. I'm sure you've seen it in many movies about ancient Rome.

              9. The half sun that made the SS bolts is the Greek letter Sigma.

              10. The runic alphabet used by Nazis is Armenian.

I could go on but I think I've made my point.

As for a group of nobodies. Hitler before becoming the Nazi party leader was just a soldier before finding himself with an unexpected level of power due to global economic turmoil. He was a nobody before that. Nevermind his other henchmen. Only Göring had a significant part and regarded as a military hero.

              • @[Deactivated]: Thanks for the extensive blogpost and that sure is being a lil pedantic don't you think

And yes we all get it; Hitler was worse than a thousand Stalins, Maos, and Pol Pots combined because he was German but I'd rather be some nobody that put his neck on the line multiple times in one of the worst wars in history (and survive) ignoring the rest even, than to be some nobody calling him a nobody

                • @the cringe: No, I classify all those people, and there are others, in the same category. Did you know that Ghengis Khan is estimated to have killed more than 40 million people? In one fit of rage he killed 75% of the then Persian Empire because the emperor refused to see through a trade deal.

In all, he is estimated to have been responsible for reducing the world population, at the time, by between 11 and 15 percent. Reminds me of the Avengers Tanos(?).

                  • @[Deactivated]: Yes - I have read genghis khan and the making of modern world by Jack Weatherford and no - I don't watch marvel/disney/whatever that childish fiction is

                    • @the cringe: Good for you. But nothing in fiction comes from our imagination alone. Fiction is an embodiment of the world we live in but sometimes exaggerated for dramatic effect. The marvel heroes are very anti-fascist. The Hydra antithesis group are basically the Nazi SS but I must say in that particular case the non-fiction version was far more cruel and ruthless.

I misread as Hitman and thought the price tag was justified…

  • Get the lcd 5. They are amazing. Not sure on this one. What do you need to drive them?

    • I'd give them all you've got. Many folks use speaker amps with these. Planars can scale quite a bit with more power

      • Cool. I discovered planars through the hifiman Sundara. I like the details and slam and punch of planars but they do need a proper amp and dac to drive

  • where is jesswolf guy?

this is quite rich for my blood, but eyeing LCD-X (2021) or Arya Stealth, for a discrete listening Sundara closed (pending reviews)

    • +2

I can assume his reply would be to buy the Hifiman Edition XS for $590 on Aliexpress or on Amazon during specials.

    • LCDX's tuning is heavily flawed. If you are looking to purchase, be ready to apply some heavy eq.

    • If you're not craving a wide stage, Mr Anan's Nan-6 would do everything else about as well for a fraction of the price. Resolution in the mid -treble may be a little behind as well.

A new option up in this price range would be the RAAL CA-1a. Would anticipate it to be beating the HE1000 V2 in everything but maybe soundstage width.

      • I've seen you mention these Mr Anan's Nan-6's a lot, I've never seen them. Is it easy to get them into Australia?

        • You're importing them via Taobao, but you should be able to get them direct from the platform as there should be no restrictions. Failing that, there's plenty of forwarding services.

Keep in mind they are akin to the HIFIMAN HE-6, so they need a powerful amp to master the execution of the dynamics in the bass (which is one thing that the Nan-6 would definitely do better than the HE-1000). Extremely current hungry.

They're technically DIY headphones, but the design is excellent.

      • +1

        Some more notes:

RE: Arya SE, would be more detail etched, worse timbre, less wide, weaker imaging. The HE-1000 V2 is along the lines of the Susvara.

Don't bother with LCD-X unless you've demo'd everything and really love the Audeze house sound and technical strengths.

Sundara closed back will be interesting, but I've got a sneaking suspicion they will be v-shaped. Given that stealth magnets tend to make a driver's tonal signature brighter all else being the same - particularly at 12kHz - I suspect that HIFIMAN have slapped it into a closed back to use bass to mask what the magnet array has done to the somewhat bright Sundara.

It'll be tasteful, but it won't be flat or, Harman neutral.

Another note with the Nan-6 is that its bass will be far more dynamic than the HE-1000, but it's overall a different technical flavour from both the Arya and the HE-1000, with the most obvious negatives being mid-treble resolution and some soundstage width.

HEKv2 also rocks soundstage height way more compared to a HE-6/Nan-6.

How will these headphones go with my walkman? Trying to hear that crisp tape sound.

    • You'll probably need a headphone amp to get the best possible crisp tape sound.

  • thanks for the bargain, grab 4 of them :)

  • Definitely need to setup my feet pics Onlyfans page so i can buy these.

    • Now that's an idea! Nautilus here I come!

  • Grab 5, Buy now and regret later

  • For that price, I would consider HEDD headphones.

  • Would these work on my 1995 Sony Walkman? And am I safe to use the Mega Bass option? I don't want to accidentally blow the drivers on the headphones

  • Where is the "tks op bought 10" reply?

    • +3

      tks op bought 10

  • Booked Virgin Galactic Flight via Skyscanner. Would these help me blend in with other passengers.
