Really hard to justify this over 6900 XT for $999. I myself moved from a 3070 Ti to a 6900 XT. Don't believe the NVidia fanboys, AMD has knocked it out of the park with RDNA2.

    • +12

Well unless you need to use some professional softwares that are better with nvidia.

      • Like what?

        • +4

          Ever tried training neural networks?
Most of the stuff I've tried use CUDA, etc.

          • +14

@Aleigh123: But you'd be using a Quadro or other enterprise RTX card for that wouldn't you?

I suppose in that very niche case, stump up the extra 25% for the Nvidia card (or just get your employer to buy one…and no large employer is going to be hunting OzBargain for the best deal, they'll be going straight to a mob like Ingram and paying top dollar).

            • +5

@xyron: Not really. For non-pro, but hobbyist stuff like rendering the RTX cards are perfect. AMD's blender plugin is working great too. Now if they can get their HIP thingy in GPU Open more user friendly, then we can see the appeal of CUDA get less.

            • +1

@xyron: Or paying eye watering rates for AWS GPU enabled EC2 instances

            • +5

@xyron: For machine learning we use normal NVIDIA cards, no one I know uses enterprise cards. There's no functional difference when it comes to deep learning and enterprise cards cost like 5 times as much.

          • @Aleigh123: if all i do is just graphics-heavy games, do I have to worry about this?

            • @jianh: Depends on the games, best to check performance results and make your own conclusions

            • @jianh: Depends what features you are after. 3D Vision (now defunct'ish) and G-Sync were enough of a draw for me to stay green. As well as AMD/ATI drivers having been historically rubbish (though I understand they've improved).

The only drawcard for me the other way would be GPU Smart Access Memory.

            • +3

@jianh: Not really. Have owned both AMD and Nvidia GPUs. If you are just gaming Radeon is better value for money, unless you really really want Nvidia specific features. With Adaptive Sync, Gsync has become pretty irrelevant. The myth about ATi drivers is just something that has been perpetuated by Fanboys. I have had driver issues with both NVIDIA and AMD. Both were rubbish till about 2013 and have significantly improved since.

              • @shellshocked: as a Linux user, the "myth" about ATi/AMD drivers being crap is not a fanboy thing, it was very real.

          • @Aleigh123: I see these <1% examples constantly posted on here to justify these ripoff models. Along with CP2077/MS2020. Take a step back for a moment and realize what you're saying, it sounds like you're clutching at straws in an attempt to justify this deal.

A much better way to justify this deal than "neural networks" would be a lower price. You're also ignoring the amount of stock of these particular models. If they were aimed at these niche groups as you claim nvidia would've manufactured exponentially less of them. I mean for Christ sake get some perspective.

        • +1

Iray stuff. AI de-noisers (like Topaz) which i think do not work with AMD cards yet.

          • +1

@kehuehue: They do, but pretty buggy at the moment. I've had a couple of tickets open for Topaz Denoise and Gigapixel open since March.

The issue with Denoise crashing was resolved only recently. After multiple beta versions Gigapixel Upscaling still has artefacts and random areas of the image exported instead of the cropped area.

One of the main reasons I'm looking to switch to the green team for my next upgrade. Hodling for sub 1K prices for the 3080/12GB, or will go for a 4xxx series card.

            • +1

@fullerms: Thanks for this crucial info ! I will be looking for a 3080i or above, as I am a amateur photographer, and use topaz alot.
I was one of the lucky ones, had a 1080i, and it broke down during the height of crypto mining, it was replaced with a recon 2080, which also broke down, so I was sent a RTX 3070, which has been running sweet, bit still looking to upgrade..I must be mad..lol

            • +1

@fullerms: Personally I've looked towards the 3090s hitting around $1000. With the current prices it doesn't seem out of the question, it matches where the equivalent 4070 will hit, and the extra memory makes it worthwhile for deep learning exercises.

    • +3

depends what games, 6900xt has issues with games like warzone

      • what issues?

        • the big one was the stuttering

i believe amd list all the bugs/issues in their driver releases so you can just check out the list vs the games you are looking to play and see

      • +11

Every card has issues with games like warzone. It runs like crap no matter the card

        • +2

No it's specifically mentioned that the 6900xt has issues with Warzone that the other rx6000 cards & nvidia cards don't. You can see it mentioned in the AMD driver changelogs on their website.

          • @Jimmy77: So the 6900xt has more issues than the rest then. The game itself is incredibly bloated and no longer optimised

        • Nope. My game runs smooth as butter with my 3080 Ti. I previously sold my 6900XT because of how bad the stuttering and 1% lows were in Warzone. Same with a lot of games, the 6900XT gets great peak frame rates, but constantly dips and has poor 1% lows compared to the NVIDIA cards.

    • What resolution do you play at and what's the improvement like going from the 3070 ti?

      • +3

4K. That was the only reason - the 3070 Ti was frustratingly not quite good enough to comfortably get over 4k 60fps on modern titles at top settings. to be honest, i couldve just played at high instead of ultra, but those $999 TUF 6900 XTs were impossible to go past (for me at least).

        • Thanks.

    • +1

Definitely the case unless you need it for professional purposes. From what I've seen though on the used market (other than mining), Nvidia cards seem to hold their value much better, you'd likely lose a similar amount if you upgrade next gen

      • +2

Nvidia cards seem to hold their value much better,

Been always perceived as the better brand, like Apple. But if AMD manages to keep their performance competitive, it wont be long before Radeons are considered premium too (like AMD did with Ryzen)

        • +4

I've also found that AMD cards 'age' a bit better as well as the drivers mature.

I've recently moved from a 980Ti/1080Ti/2080ti to a 6900xt, no complain of product.

        • +2

I like my 6900xt, but more issues.
That said, 3400x1400 res, under 200w, 120+ fps, high and ultra, such a strong card.

Will pull more watts in some games

    • Thanks for the info. I am about to built my gaming rig for 4K gaming (FS 2020) and was thinking about the graphics card. After seeing your comment I have checked few YouTube videos about the comparison between 6900tx and 3080ti and saw the results opposite of your opinion / experience. I guess it depends on the content.

      https://youtu.be/ThgOesAICqY?t=303

The other subject is upcoming GPUs… If nVidia releases 4000 series then 3000 GPUs will be way cheaper.

      • +1

The 3080 series is still the gold standard for 4K and image upscaling (not to mention raytracing), FSR 2.0 comes close but isn't as good as DLSS. There's a reason why the 3080 still costs more than the 6900 XT, despite what anyone says.

I really hope AMD can knock it out of the park with the 7000 series.

      • +6

I never said the 6900 XT is better than the 3080 Ti. I said it was much better value. Jarrod's Tech finds the 3080 Ti is only 6.5% faster on average than the 6900 XT at 4K, yet it costs 25% more.

        • +2

yep you have the point on that one.

          • +7

@wrx5: Sorry, the 3080Ti is actually 50% more expensive!

            • +2

@xyron: I used to be an AMD fanboi but after having countless (yes multi generations of cards) issues with drivers I went back to Nvidia and brought this exact 3080 Ti at a higher price. Since then have really enjoyed the professional standard of Nvidia drivers, it really should not be on consumer to debug cards/software. No regrets at all and I would do it again.

A few mates have jumped from AMD recently for the same reason. I do however like competition as it drives fair pricing so I hope AMD eventually get their software up to scratch.

So if your looking for no fuss and dabble in Ray Tracing your on a great card here. Otherwise consider the 6900xt if you can put up with occasional instability/driver bugs or dont want Ray Tracing. For some (like myself with sim racing), the occasional big is just unacceptable risk.

              • +3

@XPunK: I had a 5700 XT that was riddled with stability issues but have had nothing of the sort with any of my RDNA2 cards (have a 6700 XT, 6800, and 6900 XT in various rigs). Still have the 3070 Ti in a work rig too. It's a shame you've had stability issues with AMD but don't assume that's something that every user is sharing.

In fact, i much prefer the better real-time monitoring and tweaking capabilities offered by AMD's drivers (and all with no need to sign in to that horrible "Geforce Experience" software - amazing that NVidia users think that is acceptable).

              • +3

@XPunK: Big = bug…. cant correct my post typo above.

It definitely depends on what your doing. But just keep an open mind and buy based on your situation.

I would never just blanket recommend one over the other given my experiences (have stated the trade offs I found, but ppl do your own research).

    • +3

I use the software davinci resolve for most of my work nowadays, Amd is so little competition that a 3060ti outperforms a 6900xt, there is a difference between being a “nvidia fanboy” and being stuck to software optimisations.

      • -2

So you sacrifice heaps of gaming performance (or pay a 50% premium) just to get some faster rendering times on Davinci…doesn't make much sense to me. Like I said before, if you are doing for-profit workloads on your GPU and the time taken matters that much, your employer should be stumping up for your gear (or if you're self employed, it's all a tax writeoff anyway, so shoot for the moon!)

        • I play indie games, stuff runs fine on a 5700g, I am not employed this is a personal project, and it’s not just rendering it’s vfx, timeline consistency, scrubbing, hard to keep a consistent workflow when scrolling through the timeline is like scraping paint off a wall.

          • @Pugkin: And before anyone suggests adobe do the maths

          • -2

@Pugkin: Fair enough. I guess you are the one guy who should buy this card then (but you would still be getting better value with a 12gb 3080, as other's commenting around us have separately noted!)

      • Facts, looking at Pugetbenchmark tells you everything you need to know. I hate that AMD isn't competitive at all when it comes to these creative applications.

    • +3

Agree, 6900xt owner for 18 months now, prior card was a 2080ti, this card has been fantastic and I've enjoyed top notch performance. I actually prefer the AMD driver interface too, their app is not stuck in windows 98 design language and the built in overclocking/monitor tools are great. No need to download afterburner.

    • True but I really dig using DLSS and ray tracing with my 3080.

    • AMD or Nvidia, why is it always Gigabyte cards that are hard to move. :D

  • +19

They over priced this so much that people actually thing is a good deal when they lower the price lol. You can get a 3080 12gb for $1099. The ti is not $400 better, even the $1099 for the 3080 12gb is too much. The 4080 is rumoured to be twice as fast and will mostly cost the same as this so called deal. It's like 3-4 months away, don't believe the people saying its a year away. They want to get out ahead of AMD, the 4090 and 4080 will release this year.
I can only imagine the regret people will feel if they buy this and then a month or two later the next cards get announced and the ti drops down to $1000 lol

    • so 4080's will be around $1500?

      • +1

That's what I'm hoping ,msrp for the 3080 was under $1200. Obviously they'll up the price but hopefully not too much . They don't have miners to profit of this time around and they also have the current gen to contend with. If they're over priced some will just end up getting a 3080 second hand or on sale when they drop when the new cards come out. $1,600 would be the most I'd pay personally .and only if its close to twice the performance of a 3080 lol

        • ok cool. ive got a 3 or 4 year old 1080ti which is starting to struggle a bit now, especially at 3840 x 2160

$1200-$1600 is a lot of money for a graphics card, but if it can future proof me for at least another 4-5 years then i would think its worth it?

          • @DiscoJango: 3080 is already struggling to do most games at 4k 60fps unless using dlss or playing an older title . The 4080 would be a capable of playing 4k easily so I'd wait for that one personally. Especially it the prices is under $1,600 which I think it will be. That's still $400 over the 3080 launch price so I can't imagine them marking up the price this gen by over $400

            • @S1nn3r86: thanks :)

only thing is, new gpu usually goes hand in hand with new cpu, mobo, ram, hdd, psu and case. guess i better start saving!

  • +3

    I am HODL-ing~!

  • +11

Better to have gotten the 3080 12gb for $1099, this is definitely not worth price jump in any situation

  • +7

    Still overpriced…

  • +7

3080 12GB is likely to drop below $1k

hard to justify this price tag

  • +3

Yep, $400 over 3080 is not even close to being worth it.

  • +1

You can get full 3080 systems for a little more. 1500 for a GPU is way too much even if its the cream of the crop. 3080 Ti at 1000 sounds within reason if you have money to splash but at 1500, I don't believe its worth it.

  • +3

Below info might help people planing to spend money on CPUs and GPUs:

I have seen somewhere on the internet that nVidia 4000 series GPUs are ready but due to slow speed of reducing the stocks of 3000 series GPUs release date has been moved from Sep 2022 to around Dec 2022.

Intel will be releasing 13th gen CPUs around Sep 2022 which should reduce 12th gen CPU prices. There are YouTube comparison videos already between 13th gen and 12th gen. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ICenGUH_Nqo

AMD will be releasing 7000 CPUs on 15 Sep 2022.

AMD has plans to release new GPUs RDNA3 7000 towards to end of 2022 similar to nVidia.

Well I guess not too long, within few months, prices will change a bit.

    • +1

Due to collapse of mining (POS was tentatively announce for 19Sept) , there will be a huge influx of 3xxx card both new and used.

Some of the Eth mining card will remain and migrate to other coins but market will be flooded , IMO of course , which we can see how sharp prices are fallin.

I won't be surprised if Jensun delays 4xxx series or release a super limited amount as he's tons of 3000 cards with partners.

      • If Jensang can make 200% off the first half of his stock, he can afford for sell the second half for 50%.

        • +1

technically correct but he'll post much less profit for this year which is no good for his face in front of share holders….lol…then he'll start manipulating the market , same as what he did last 2-3 years

  • +1

If I've got a G-SYNC only monitor should I be staying in the NVIDIA ecosystem or is it negligible now with a high end GFX card? (Dell AW3420DW)?

    • same boat with x34p

    • Same. Gsync too good.

  • Damn I paid $1569 for 3080 12Gb in April

    • +2

That's over 3 months ago, no point complaining now.

    • Ouch the $999 6900xt is a far better card.

      • 6900XT available for $999 in April?

        • That's a very incorrect way of looking at it.

There's definitely point in complaining. It's 30% cheaper within 2 months after April… after being overpriced at 2k for a year.

  • Highly tempted to upgrade my 2080 Super Ventus. Running Fortnite at 1440p on Ultra and games like F1 22 just bobbles around with the FPS, and even a small overclock with either of the above two games just doesn't go down well.

  • +9

Accidentally hit the upvote button. Should have been a downvote. There is zero value in this for most people when the 6900 XT exists for $999. NVIDIA jacked up the price so much that people are lulled to thinking this is a good deal. Unless you need NVIDIA for some reason, get the 6900 XT for a third of the price less.

    • +2

You can revoke your vote by going to the 'votes' tab

  • +3

    Tell em they're dreaming!

  • Not a good deal, in the US the price dropped to $900, 1300AUD.

    • +1

I wouldn't buy it even for that price but if someone wanted too go with EVGA good warranty for AU

      • I agree Gigabyte be it AMD or Nvidia card is a hard sell because of GB's bad warranty behaviour over their card failures with customers.

  • +1

    Come on 1k

  • +4

    HODL MAKE EM BLEED GREEN

is this card any good for TF2 ?

    • +1

Is TF2 any good for this card?

      • You mean Team Fortress 2?

You should manage 60fps at 4k with maxed settings, but if you need 120fps it may struggle - a 3090 would probably handle it okay though.

      • Is good any card for this TF2?

  • seems like this is not a deal.

This is dropped price. everywhere else sells at the same price

  • +3

Vision is the same price on Amazon https://amzn.asia/d/8VTSdnQ

    • +1

      Need Wanda too…

  • I am waiting for the 69xx series

    • +1

AMD RX6900 GPU is already out, no need to wait.

      • +1

Maybe they meant the RX 79xx XT cards coming out later this year.
