Used to be a reasonable deal, but since the price of Serenity tyres seems to have jumped up by about $50 per tyre, it's not really getting a free 4th tyre.

    • +3

I mean that's also inflation/shipping. With the price of containers having gone up by about $10k. With say 500 tyres in a container, that's just $20 more on shipping alone, let alone everything else.

Not saying you don't have a point, just saying it isn't necessarily purely a money grab. Only partly?

      • containers haven't gone up by $10k….

Yes they went up, but not by $10k
In fact they're rapidly returning to where they were before.

        • +6

          In AUD it's close enough…
I'm paying around US$7k at the moment, but this is the cheapest part of the year and we're heading into the expensive part of the year, where I will not be surprised to be paying US$10k.
October-December last year was up around US$12k

Historically USD$2k was around the mark, so US$7k is hardly close to "returning to where they were".
          So we're up US$5k = AU$7.2 but levelised across the past 12 mo0nths, AU$10k extra/container is probably about right.

Shipping charges are also factored into the value of goods and therefore the Import Duty and GST you pay as an importer.

          • -4

@ESEMCE: I agree it's still quite excessive, but the ridiculous prices are a thing of the past as supply chains catch up.

            • +5

              @Drakesy:

but the ridiculous prices are a thing of the past as supply chains catch up.

If you're not in the International Supply Chain business, then you're dreaming.
If you are in the business, then you're the most optimistic person in the business. Everyone I talk to think that prices will remain high until at least after CNY 2023.

I have no reason to think they're wrong and you're right.
I'm still seeing multiple weeks in shipping delays which mean the wharves are not catching up and we're only 6 weeks away from Golden Week peak shipping which is historically when shipping delays bite even in "normal" years. So this will just make the current delays worse and prices will rise as demand outstrips supply in available shipping capacity.

Note that Factory Output is not and has not been the problem for a while now.
But International Shipping is in all sorts of trouble and the Shipping lines are making mint while providing crap service so they have no great desire to decrease prices any time soon.

              • +1

@ESEMCE: He's obviously not in the business, he went from having the polar opposite opinion to you, to the next post almost agreeing with you that they are "still quite excessive".

Probably just running on old info that the news was putting out last year that 2022 was going to be the "return to normal" year.

              • +1

@ESEMCE: Interesting insights, thanks. I had no idea about the index or any of this before.

              • -1

                @ESEMCE: So my take is
Bunker fuel is coming back to reasonable levels - one of the biggest costs
Wharves such as Shanghai are quickly catching up - again, purely covid shutdown related.
                Panama canal isn't clogged up.

The rest of the world is largely uninhibited as far as trade is concerned

                • +1

                  @Drakesy: So your "take" just proves you have no idea here;

                  • BAF (the fuel surcharge) is literally a fraction of the cost of shipping a container. It's around 10% of the shipping cost, USD$6-700 at current rates. It's slowly decreasing, but not going away quite yet. Even if it did, prices would remain sky high.
My shipping prices mentioned above are before BAF by the way… It's not something I consider in my long term cost tracking because of the variability.

                  • Wharves such as Shanghai were behind before the lockdown, so got even further behind in the 60 odd days they lost (despite most freight going out through other ports) and yeah they might be catching up, but containers are still sitting there for 2-3 weeks and as mentioned above we're heading into the busy season when even in normal times they don't keep up.
Every hour's delay means more and more vessels sitting idle off the coast instead of moving, which has been and remains the major issue in International Shipping.
These delayed vessels are reducing the moving volume of goods. Therefore creating a reduced supply of moving volume which results in increased prices to move volume as Demand exceeds Supply.

                  • Panama Canal doesn't (directly) impact the vast majority of Australian routes.

There continue to be delays at destination ports as Stevedores and Road and Rail Freight crews are impacted by sickness.
And finally, the MUA still hasn't resolved it's Industrial dispute from 2020 AFAIK and they know when to time their Industrial Action… through the busiest time of year in September-November.

                  • @ESEMCE: To write off all of those doesn't exactly help your case

                    • +2

@Drakesy: Happy to update and review the direction of Container prices with you in 4 weeks time.
By your reckoning, they'll be well on their way back down to US$2000/40HQ, I reckon we'll be going past US$8500 into the East Coast and well past US$9000 to West Coast ex Shanghai (plus BAF).

This is one of those "bets" I kinda hope to lose… Winning isn't good news for me, even if it proves me right.

                      • @ESEMCE: @Drakesy
Kudos to you, shipping prices are slightly down.

my August average 40HQ was around US$7200+BAF
my September average 40HQ was around US$6900+BAF

More importantly shipping times are down significantly, so now I can agree that prices are likely to continue to drop.

                        • @ESEMCE: Yet the doubters still neg away
I cant do anything about that
                          But yeah
                          It was bound to happen

                    • @Drakesy: Just had a meeting with one my Freight Forwarders.
They informed me that the BAF was going UP, not down! (go figure)

They also said that Shipping prices are still going down, but my most recent quotes from their competitor through this week have been $100-200 higher than in previous weeks on generally comparable routes. Not enough to call it, but an inkling.
They're also trying to win more of my business, so might be reducing their take to sweeten me up.

        • Paid US10K for 20GP in March. Right now not much cheaper.

          • @Metre: Yeouch! Where from?
That's close to what I was paying for a 40HQ in the same period!

            • @ESEMCE: Shenzhen. They had a covid lockdown right when we were needing it to ship.

      • Hot take 🤣👊

      • This is one of the problems with current inflation and the constant talking about it in the media.

Price rises will obviously have to happen to some extent due to increased transport costs. However, many businesses see an opportunity to add a bit of fat on top and increase the profit margin, purely because everyone is talking about inflation so it becomes an expectation. That makes inflation worse and increases the problem. Sadly greed gets in the way of most things working as well as they should.

While I think the RBA is going a bit too hard and may ultimately send us backwards, part of their reasoning is to try to nip this sort of profiteering in the bud by reducing/killing demand.

    • +1

      agree,

      for instance, price from https://www.bobjane.com.au

      Bridgestone DUELER H/P SPORT 225/60R17 99V $359 each

      buy 3 get 1 free = $269.25 each

      Bridgestone Ecopia H/L 001 225/60R17 99V $307 each

      buy 3 get 1 free = $230.25 each

      Dunlop Grandtrek ST20 225/60R17 99H $246

      Michelin PRIMACY 4 225/60R17 103V $245

      Dunlop Grandtrek PT3 225/60R17 99V $236

      Kumho Solus Eco KL21 225/60R17 99H $190

    • Serenity now, financial insanity later

  • -8

Be very careful about doing research on what fits if you're going to a Bridgestone shop to get these fitted (the serenity plus is not available to any other shops/mechanics AFAIK). They are not trained properly.

The guy at my local Bridgestone tried to fit dangerously small tyres on my car, like literally half the width and thickness of a sane size, and refused to budge. This was even after I booked the appointment with Bridgestone online for the specific size, model, and price. Illegal & dangerous bait'n'switch.

    • +8

      name and shame the location?

I'd say it's unfair to paint all Bridgestone outlets with the same brush?

      • -1

        Bridgestone Select Fortitude Valley

in other cases, I see why it'd be unfair, but first party franchises are generally run to the same expectations/standards. if this one has such low criteria for their staff, who knows what they're doing for other branches.

    • +3

You can't really say every single Bridgestone franchise is "Illegal & dangerous bait'n'switch". I've had nothing but pleasure dealing with the. The local shop take tyres of rims for me regularly without even charging.

      • great for you. just a warning for the others.

    • +3

I'm not sure that a bad customer service experience with a particular store is worth negging a deal that ranges across many outlets?

      • -2

first party franchises are generally run to the same expectations/standards. if this one has such low criteria for their staff, who knows what they're doing for other branches.

        • -1

The deal is across other retailers too. You can order through tyresales and choose any installer

          • @malich: if you bothered to read at all, you would notice i specifically pointed out

if you're going to a Bridgestone shop to get these fitted (the serenity plus is not available to any other shops/mechanics AFAIK)

            • @xrailgun: My comment was in relation to negging the deal. Which you have revoked now

    • +1

The one and only time I went to a Bridgestone store (in GC) to get tyres fitted, they really tried hard to get me to let them fit non-standard width tyres because standard width tyres for my car were out of stock. I declined and never went back - but this doesn’t mean every other store would be the same.

    • +1

How would they ever fit half width tyres on the rim? This doesn't make sense.

      • of course it doesn't, so i told them to bugger off and left.

    • What are your wheel specs and what tyre size did they try to fit?

      • wheels were 18x9, they insisted on fitting 215/45/r17.

again, this was after specifically booking in an appointment and confirming availability and pricing of the correctly specced tyres.

        • +3

I find it hard to believe that they attempted to fit a 17" diameter tyre to an 18" wheel…

    • +1

Same promotion in regular rotation. I went to buy some RE003 last month and they definitely weren't still under promotion. So this is a valid deal post.

But yes, likely to be at all the usual retailers as it is a manufacturer promotion.

  • +1

Damn, those prices have moved! Last time - under 2 years ago - the RE003 for my wheels were $235ea. Now $309. Calc….that's +$74ea or +31.5%.

Who got greedy fast? Bye bye Bridgestone.

    • +1

Just checked mine. Man, they've gone up in price since 2 years ago.
      Were $330, now $399 each.

    • +1

      $150 -> $200 each for me.

    • i find Maxxis, BFGoodRich and Hankook tyres are goods in terms of price and quality

which you can try them next time.

      • Not sure BFG are in the price bracket of the other 2. Over 300k km on my car, Bridgestone wore the quickest by a long way. Good life out of Maxxis, BFG KO1 and Falken though.

    • -1

Following the trend of economic inflation, the cost of importing/exporting has also increased, and as you may know, Bridgestone Tyres are mostly made in Thailand/Vietnam. An increase in the cost of manufacturing, import/export costs, and other business costs really add up. The company isn't just going to cop the increase in prices, they have to offset it somehow, so eventually, the customer gets the blow.

Painful, I know, but that's just how the world works now.

    • +4

What’s more, is that the RE003 is a lot lower in performance compared to other tyres on the market now.
So it’s overall value has gone down 2x.

    • To be fair, all other brands have gone up also.

My Serenity Plus in 205/60R16 were $145. Now they are $205.
Other brand's prices are around $200 too :(
      https://www.jaxtyres.com.au/tyres/sizes/16-inch/205-60R16?gc…

      • How is the serenity inside the cabin? Quiet tyre as it is called? or rubbish after having tyre for 2 or more years? Need to change my tyres soon
        Never tried any Bridgestones yet

        • It's quiet but as with any road tyre, the road noise will depend on the road surface material. Roads around Adelaide are getting resurfaced and the tyres are very quiet on these new surfaces. On coarse bitumen, it is loud. But that is the same with most road passenger tyres.

  • -1

Price went from 135 - 189 per tyre in the past year. 16 inch tyres.

Edit: and I got this same deal at $135 back then.

    • -2

So the neg is for what reason?

      Inflation?

      Is b3g1f not a bargain?

    • +1

Time to fire up the delorian

  • +2

I know we have inflation, but the jump from 12 months ago - $50 per tyre seems a bit more than juts blaming that on inflation.

    • It's the easy excuse

  • Costco had these for $289 only 2 weeks ago. (RE003 in my size)

Now they have gone to $320 a tyre. What an absolute rip off.

    • +3

Didn't you know there's been 10.7% inflation in the last 2 weeks?

      • 10.7? Is that it? 🙃

      • I did believe you however 😂. Nothing is impossible these days in relation to inflation.
Just typing this comment I see the prices went up again.

  • +5

The deal should be called: Buy 3, get the RRP.

  • Damn¡

    We need new tires.
Looks like we’re up for more for them now.

Any good (real) deals around atm…

  • Damn, looked at my email receipts, bought the RE003 215/45/R18 in Nov 2016 for $275 each, now its $369 each, that's a 34% increase

  • I paid $669 for 4, re003, 245/35r19 in April 2021.

Not worth the $900 using this deal they're asking atm.

  • +1

RE004 has been out for years overseas…

  • +1

If people want to whinge about inflation in tyre prices, they should look at fuel prices first.

    • Unleaded is $1.50/ltr

      • Now add the fuel excise

    • September is fast approaching ;-)

      • Followed by October. Then November…

  • Worth checking prices at Tyroola. Sometimes they have very good prices.
Buying tyres is like any other high-cost purchase nowadays where you have to shop around, haggle, and question fake discounts.

  • $220 for RE003 225/45/17. $660 for a set.
    2 years ago I paid $540 a set.
    22% increase.

  • +1

MyCar offer a price beat so whatever you can find (including this deal) its worth speaking to their call centre before you pull the trigger elsewhere.

If you choose one of their 'selected' brands they also include their Tyre Care Plan which is well worth bonus, including a free rotation after six (6) months.

I found a buy three get one free deal recently for Bridgestone's, they beat that deal then offered me Pirelli's at the same discounted price which was included in the Tyre Care Plan..

  • Prices surely have gone up quick. Had a puncture Monday and was quoted $55 to repair it. First thought was don't bother when you can get that size tyre brand new from $100… Except it's no longer that price on closer inspection. I'm looking at $150+ compared to 3 years ago

  • How often does Bridgestone run this deal?

    • This is the question you should ask Bridgestone directly, not us here.

  • Anyone here use tyresales? I just got an offer of spend $800 get $100 back on my Amex and they're offering the Buy 3 get 1 free…

4x 245/40/18 RE003's for $885 fitted with alignment comes down to $785 with the cashback offer.
