Trade in an old corolla and they owe you money!

      they owe you money

You'll need it for the hire car whilst the MG is back at the dealer.

        but costs $80k+ more

        • +1

its most like 100k when you add everything up lol.

      • +1

Beautiful car but I can't imagine paying 115k for an MG.

        • -2

          Seems like a good deal!

          • +3

@maggiemee: It'll be worth half that as soon as you drive out of the dealership.

        • Yeah your would buy a Porsche boxer for that

          • @kungfuman: Or a old Maserati or Range Rover if depreciation is your thing

      • Want to drive that. Couldn't own a coup though

    • Why would you make the sacrifice?

  • +3

I heard it struggles uphill any comments?

    • +79

84kW engine… probably struggles on flat ground hahahaha

      • +3

Kei cars generally produce around 47kW. That said, they don't weigh a lot and can be moved by a couple men.

        • +10

Great. Carry a few blokes with you if you arw going uphill. Problem solved.

          • +2

@aparasher: Except.. not in your car. You might need them to follow in a convoy.

      • -1

I got you covered this MG has 375kw 0 to 100 in 3.2 seconds https://mgmotor.com.au/pages/cyberster there ya go problem solved.

        • Damn thats nice

          • @ATTS: you won't be saying that when you see the price tag :D

            • @kungfuman: Haha i did see it, better than getting a tesla model s i think

Hmm i wonder if they copied the tesla body cameras

              • @ATTS: lol Mg has something called MG PILOT!!! its there version of tesla autopilot. well they also have 2 other cars one that looks like a model 3 and one that looks like a model Y both in similar price ranges.

                • @kungfuman: Haha there copying tesla

                  • @ATTS: they couldn't come up with a better name than MG pilot? lol

                    • @kungfuman: Should they have called it MG Gunner?

                      • @ATangk: well they pretty much took autopilot and remove the auto part lol.

      • My bike has more kw than this

just get the kids to get out and push

1.5L naturally aspirated (non-turbo) engine producing 84kW and 150Nm of torque with a slow CVT transmission and 1,295 KG weight means it reaches 0-100km/h time in 10.9 seconds. Yep, it'll be sluggish.

      • +38

So it accelerates like every car from a red light.

        • -5

          *like every non-electric car.

          • +2

@Eeples: I barely can see all the other cars in the rear view mirror when I start at the traffic light. provided I am pole position. otherwise it's the usual slow grind along the Princes Highway. driving more than 10kph below speed limit should be made illegal

            • @shabaka: OR, hear me out.
LIFT SPEED LIMITS to +20kmph! @shabaka
I would sign that petition in a heartbeat.
Instead of chasing real crimmies, they go after 'speeding', ooo, 2kmph, $300 fine!

And they find someone, AFTER the crime, drink driving/drugs, in a stolen vehicle, that they physically assaulted someone to get, then smashed that car along with two other cars and hurt a couple of pedestrians… The criminal gets bailed. Yep, nice.

        • Yeah every other car being a dual cab BAKKIE

          • @eddyah: safaaaaaa

          • @eddyah: A what?

How is a CVT slow? They're fundamentally the fastest transmission I.e. no time wasted shifting gears or outside of the maximum torque range. They're also the most economical because no time wasted shifting and they can keep the engine at peak fuel economy. (Power and economy are mutually exclusive and depend on how hard you press the pedal)

My 2003 Mitsubishi mirage was 70kw and 125nm (and that's torque only sometimes (and that's factory specs, 22 years later was probably lucky to get 80% of that)), with a 4speed auto. Weighed around 1 ton. No sports car but damm it was fun. Completely capable and fast enough for 99% of the population.

Do some maths and the MG with a faster transmission though less torque/kg is also good for 99% of tjr population

        • 99%? Id say maybe 50%.

          • +2

@ATangk: What does one half of the population do that the other half doesn't do (in regards to driving a car).

Only the 1% wants a car that can do burnouts.

99% need a work and grocery getter, and maybe drive to a holiday location 200km away once every year or two.

What else do 99% of people do?

            • +5

@Some Random Guy: 99% of people need a reliable form of transport…

              • @ATangk: Define reliable?

Engine? Transmission? Electronics? Gets you from A to B? Will keep your family safe in a crash? Comes with a reliable mechanic?

Do 99% have an unlimited budget?

What would be more reliable a new $40k Toyota corolla with $0 dollars in servicing across the next 5 years?

Or a $25k dollar car of any brand serviced liberally and proactively?

No car is reliable. that is a myth

There are unreliable cars (cars from 2010 plus minus some years is a big example).

But more often than not you have lazy servicing, bad drivers, and people not using the whole rev range (hence why the Italian tune up exists).

(For example, the RX8, add some oil to the fuel, and use the whole rev range and its a reliable beast. Run it dry and low rpm and your apex seals go quick).

        • +3

CVTs are slow. Your fastest theory doesn’t work in practice. CVTs are designed to save fuel not performance.

Manufacturers don’t put CVTs in performance cars because they suck. Subaru did with the WRX and everyone hates it.

          • +2

@Grok: Toyota's eCVT is something totally different but quite impressive in how someone even thought of it.

          • +1

            @Grok: https://racingnews365.com/the-dutch-invention-that-instantly…

Quicker, as they literally optimise power delivery by continually varying gear ratios not rpm, but much more boring, and you're right, normally intended for economy cars.

          • @Grok: Brother has is (though an idiot), it is not slow and is actually faster because of the CVT

I believe everyone forgets that you can program the pedal response

Dad has a 2015 petrol Toyota corolla with a CVT, also is not slow.

The only slow feeling CVT car has been my gf's 2010 Suzuki SX4, but that's because it's a big round blob that doesn't give a lot of a feedback to the driver.

In all the CVTs if you lightly press the pedal the engine seldom revs above 2k rpm. Put it mid way and it'll do the fake shift thing. Foot to the floor and the engine won't move off of max power (kw) around 5k rpm for most these cars.

Honestly I'm nog sure why I'm discussing this with a bunch of numb nuts who couldn't point out a spark plug if it looked them in their eyes

          • @Grok: CVT: continuously variable transmission.

A transmission where the gearing ratio can continuously change without the need for a clutch or clutch packs or even gears!

When a transmission operates it is "slowest" when the powerplant (engine) cannot deliver power to the wheels, ie when the clutch is in or the hydraulics in a conventional auto are doing their thing.

Engineers saw this as the fundamental issue and bottleneck with conventionals. This lead to the development and wide spread use of the cvt because it both improved performance and fuel economy - the engine is never resting during acceleration.

Yes they're not fun (I've driven every transmission except DSG) and CVTs feel a little weird but that's because you're more so controlling the transmission then the engine. Like you elect a speed or acceleration and the car does the rest rather then you revving the engine and shifting to stop it from hitting the limiter.

Hyundai put a manual transmission mode in their latest sports EV because even though EVs are the fastest, they lack character - they're all just a AC motor spinning from 0 to whatever rpm no hitches or stops along the way.

So I'm not arguing fun factor. I'm arguing that CVTs are the best for both performance and fuel economy, and that isn't an argument that is a fact. And on reliability, if you have a first gen DSG, or 1st gen mitsu, Honda or Nissan CVT then yes you'll have problems. So did the first conventional autos and manual.

CVTs, made by a reliable company and serviced properly (not by the book but by using your brain), will last as last as any other transmission and you won't have to deal with swapping out clutches or clutch pack wear (but saying this if you're having heaps of wear on either of those you are doing smth wrong)

Car companies would not put billions of dollars into R&D for a worse product that would be stupid and hard to convince your shareholders with.

            • @Some Random Guy: One of the most common CVTs in Australia is the Nissan owned Jatco unit, it’s horrendously unreliable. You can extend its life slightly by religiously changing the transmission oil (against the recommendation of the manufacturer)

The most common design of CVTs of two cones and a band connecting them is a fundamentally weak and flawed design that is an abomination in the field.

The Toyota planetary gear version is different, it’s expensive, no-one else does it and it’s designed for economy

As I said the theory is great, the practice is different.

          • @Grok: CVTs are in generally speaking cheaper to build, more fuel efficient and when made correctly, smoother.

Issue with them is its structure are not robust enough for high torque transmission therefore not very good for performance cars or heavier cars (thinking of Nissan's iconic failure with the x-trail). However for a very basic and little urban commuters like this it makes a lot of sense. They can be very reliable as long as not stressed. You see some almost 30 years old Honda Civics still running around on old CVTs.

        • +1

In theory maybe, in practice no - They also suffer from friction losses significantly higher than any DSG/Manual transmission, and even more than a typical auto iirc.

        • Dude, never EVER admit to having owned/driven a Mitsubishi Mirage.

          • @MrZ: Ykno the CE series of lancer/mirages are quite sort after for track days and mods right?

There's a whole Australian forum for them

      • That's before you stick 3-4 people in it and the boot loaded. 200-300kg on top including fuel. So trying to push 1500+kg.

        • +2

You can say that for every car ever.

If you put 400kg onto of the kerb weight on any car it'll be slower.

I'm just baffled to why people believe they need anything more than a basic car - well I'm not exactly baffled so to say as most men are compensating for something else and a big fast car makes them feel good.

Realistically we could all do fine with a moped or a smart car but no we need big ford rangers that can't fit in a parking spot.

          • @Some Random Guy: "If you put 400kg onto of the kerb weight on any car it'll be slower"
Not if the car is already struggling moving its own weight. That's the point of the previous comments.

why people believe they need anything more than a basic shelter? A tent will do
why people believe they need anything more than basic food? Beans and Rice for every meal will do
why people believe they need anything more than a basic shoes? Grass Sandals will do
            etc etc.

Sorry, that argument is pretty shallow.

It now qualifies for a pensioner discount on your insurance and vintage plates.

    • My s cross struggles, well it doesn't but the engine revs loud if you accelerate fast which seems a bit rude so I just take it easy.

    • +1

I drove it and it doesn't just struggle uphills. It has almost 4 second delay from pressing accelerator to actually moving forward. The old ZS 1.5 is much better with the regular Auto gearbox. These are trash engines and trash gearboxes. Terrible build quality. I ended up buying the old 1.5. The old essence 1.3 is also much better. The 1.5 with Auto box was the best drive out of all of them. Do not know how it passed safety tests…

      • yep - 1.5 with CVT is a dog

1.3 with 6AT is much better, just feed it 95 to reduce hesitation

    • -2

My Getz 2006 has no problem getting up hills. You need to lose weight.

    • Mrs Entropy’s first car was an early Australian Mazda 929? from the early 1960s that had been owned by the one couple all their lives and they had left the plastic covers on the seats (for some reason cars weren’t detailed back then by the dealer).

Anyway, on our first date in Newcastle it could not climb the hill and started rolling backwards.

My first couples’ project was to convince her to get a decent car (manual Pulsar Q) and learn to drive a manual so she could visit me in Canberra.

    • +1

      It struggles with everything!

Hesitation from a standing start and sluggish performance makes this vehicle potentially dangerous if you are trying to enter fast moving traffic.

Australia's cheapest SUV and they need to give people a $2,000 cashback to encorage purchase?

Thats when you know that Australians have woken up to this useless vehicle that has the highest depreciation rate in Australia!

  • +1

Realistically how much will these be selling for on the second hand market in 5 years? $8k prob

    • +39

Just run it until it dies.

        • +5

Wouldn't leasing be a far better option for someone who is constantly after the latest gen?

          • +1

@Benyq: When you run the maths, usually no.

            • @tottenman: Depends on your income. Higher income almost a no brainer if you are wont to churn cars, but you would get something a bit further up the market tbh if leasing.

              • @entropysbane: more of a no brainer if it's used for work and can tax deduct. otherwise it's borderline when you run the maths.

        • +1

Well then it last 5 years, pretty simple hey!

@BatmanAU: Never lost out trading in? You took a car dealer for a ride?

                • @entropysbane: No I didn’t lose out, I got what I was happy with, even made more on one car actually, so bonus.

        • +3

Want latest gen but buys bottom barrel cars made to go from A - B.

          Good logic

          • @krisspy: "Bottom barrel" cars still make advances and new features over 5 years. Low iq logic by you

            • @tottenman: Yeah you wanna wait 5 years for the base model to finally get electric seats? Lmao what a joke

You get a half decent ev/hybrid from a Chinese company and you already have all the fruits a car can have plus even tick off some luxury features.

More power to you since you love throwing money away at depreciating econoboxes. There's a dad thanking you in 5 years time for their kids learner car.

      • +1

Then thats only 2 years what to do for the next 3 years?

    • $12k is probabaly the bottom. I saw many worse MG3 listings sell fast once they hit that point. Because either it was an old well run car from another brand or a newer mediocre car for ~$10k.

    • +1

Bold of you to assume it will even last 5 years.

    • +4

So 10k deprecation or 2k a year is really good.

      • Have a rev head mate who loves his Audi's, has a Rs3 and a Q5, mocks my Hyundai that I got for $29k, worth probably $10k today after 9 years, his Q5 has dopped $40k in value over 4 years, he can mock me all day, he doesn't own his house, I'm 6 years away from paying mine off.

I couldn’t find 2020 car, maybe it wasn’t available then. But 2021 cars are at least $15k on carsales. So I wouldn’t hold hopes holding 8k hoping to buy a second hand one.

be lucky if that, had exact model traded it less than 18 months old and took a huge hit ridding it.. complete lemon of a car multiple warranty repairs in first 12mo, terrible to drive, lots of gremlins, barely goes with the aircon on. see FB group, yeh easy to say but warranty.. but when a car has issues like that its a never ending chase to fix. compared to Haval/GWM bought at same time night and day difference.

    • Just pay for the paint protection and extended warranty for extra resale value.

    • I would go a decent second hand car well before this.

    • 5 year old models are selling as low at $12K now!
