  • can it "easily" stream to an iPad? what (if any) App is required?

    • There is an app you can dl. Search YouTube it looks pretty easy from the demo. Also can have a few devices streaming at the same time.

Its just so much extra $ for a wireless streaming capability though isn't it? I mean its a good function, but wow, they sure put a premium on it.

    • +2

Well it does add in wifi hardware, batteries and whatnot..

Plus this is mainly targeted for iDevices, with their lack of usb support. No surprise they charge a premium

      • oh, so its completely portable. that is cool.

  • I don't know if this is a stupid question, but can you still connect while connected to the internet WiFi? Meaning using two WiFi connections at once? Amazing if you can.. but I'm certain you can't.

    • you can. It'll act as a wireless bridge.

      • Oh. Thanks man. I should learn more about this technique.

        • I have one. And unless there's been some major firmware changes in the last few months, you can't do this without modding the firmware. There is a way to connect the goflex to your local access point, and stream from it like it was another pc on your network, while retaining internet access. But otherwise you can connect to one access point at a time, your wifi, or the wifi provided by the goflex.

You can find details on it here. http://forums.seagate.com/t5/GoFlex-Satellite/bd-p/goflex_sa…

Edit: I apologize. It appears that with v1.3 of the firmware you can connect to local networks without modding. So what zukand said may now be possible.

New firmware updates now allows simultaneous wifi stream and bridge to network. Also increase battery life. Cnet link for more info.

I hate using my IPAD for video you have to convert your files to a specific MP4 format it's just too much trouble.
    http://www.kaiserbaas.com/wireless/personal-media-player

This media player does 720p and downscales 1080p mkv it kicks ass for video and its still a 100 bucks!

    • With the seagate you don't need to reformat or use iTunes just stream via wifi and the app. Also supports 1080p

      • "on an iPad 2 we could only play H.264, MP4 or QuickTime files, as per the limitations of Apple's tablet."

        http://www.cnet.com.au/seagate-goflex-satellite-500gb-339321…

Not sure if it will be different for the new ipad and since that review is from Sep 2011, the hardware/firmware/app for the HDD might also have been updated. Also from what I can tell the device pushes the content out to other devices which will then need to decode it themselves rather than streaming it.

    • why do you down a movie player from the appstore which plays multiple movie formats? works great for me, without the need to convert the file to mp4.

    • I use AV PLAYER HD for my IPAD
You don't need to convert anything, you can watch 1080p files, and I have not found anything it won't play. you simply drag and drop the files, or you can transfer them wirelessly.

      • Other than this device what else can you use ? 16 gig or 32 gig doesn't cut it with too many 1080p files.

for 200 bucks i am sure you could get a cheap android tablet with usb support and a HDD?
this is why i moved away from apple!!

    • -1

You don't like apple because it doesn't have USB support?

      Wierd

      • +1

No they moved away from Apple due to their limited codec support.

      • +2

Among a billion other things Apple do not support. Eg. True capability to manage its own file system without jailbreak, lack of video codecs, cannot do anything without itunes etc etc.

  • +1

I use Transformer pad 300, plug a usb hard disk straight into keyboard then there you go. no extra charger, no configuration(like iPad) for dual wireless link ( I doubt it works without special hardware). Not to say, it's much cheaper!

  • Dse had it for $198 on their one day sale think
