makes it hard to justify buying 2tb pcie 3.0 tbh

  • +1

Is this too slow for PS5?

    • -4

      Yes, pcie 3.0 not 4.0

      • +10

It's gen 4, but not fast enough

        • Speed is same as Gen 3 lol

      • +1

        Wut

    • +2

Its been discussed in previous threads, some people say its fine, some say its not fine. Apparently its slower to copy games to, but its fine to read while playing.

      • +1

I wonder if it passes the official Sony test

        • +2

I've had this exact drive installed in my ps5 since Feb. Official test was only around 3600mb/s, but haven't had any issues so far…

        • No issues here…installed since Feb…

        • I also recently installed this on the PS5. No issues as well. Copying of games from the main SSD to itself was relatively quick. GT7 loads just as fast.

          • @Davesday: Did you just leave the SSD cover off since the heatsink is too tall to close it?

            • +1

@jace88: Thats right. I left the SSD cover off as the heatsink rises over the cover. I read that you could technically screw it in (more like forcing it) but I decided not to do it. I have not experienced any issues or EMI interference.

Is this too slow for PS5?

It's still able to trick PS5 to permit it (since it supports PCIe gen 4) and there isn't any PS5 game that can cause problem for this SSD yet. The sustained write speed is subpar, but you are not going to be transferring games from internal SSD to this one all the time. It's not the slowest PCIe gen 4 SSD in terms of read speed.

Assuming you are asking this question because you still haven't got an SSD for your PS5, if so, this one is worth considering (due to the price).

      • The rate they are dropping price, I have to wonder if in 9 months a "def good enough for sure" 2TB one will be $200 anyhow

        • Well, E19 1TB SSD was $109, but for some reason E19 2TB SSDs are quite expensive. 2TB @ 200 for PCIe gen 4 will happen. One possibility is E19 2TB with QLC, but that's going to be tricky because E19 is 4 channels only, so QLC gets a bit too ugly (benchmark wise, it will most likely dip to below PCIe gen 3 speed). So, E19 2TB offerings are TLC, but wanting decent 2TB TLC NAND chips based SSD (with inferior controller, E19) to beat QLC NAND chips with better controller (E16) is not likely yet.

      • I got a read speed on the PS5 of 3845.977Mbps when formatting the drive. Currently moving some of my PS+ games over.

  • thats just an insane price for a 2tb gen 4 nvme drive

    • +1

Not really, you are still paying for the E16 controller. 2TB QLC NAND with Phison E16 basically.

      • +1

Umm so is that a good thing or bad thing??

        • +1

I think they're saying it's meh, from the link in the first comment QLC is a negative for high end product and E16 is good. So the combination makes it a trade off of sorts. Idk it's all news to me.

        • Compared to the cheapest 2TB E16 with TLC NAND deal:
Sabrent Rocket NVMe 4.0 2TB with Heatsink $268.7 Delivered @ Amazon AU

I wouldn't call this "insane" price. That's all. Whether it is a good thing or a bad thing depends on how you utilise the SSD. If you can avoid the ugly side of QLC, then it is fine. At least with QLC, getting 2TB is a good idea (because with 8 channels, at least it can push the QLC sustain write towards 250MB/s).

          • @netsurfer: That particular deal was available for about 20 minutes.

            • @ihfree: There are other deals with that SSD which are ~$20 more.
My point is that, given P1 2TB (QLC) was $205, this does feel like we are still paying for the E16 controller.

If your usage avoids heavy writes a lot, then this SSD is a good idea, it's just I don't think it is an "insane" deal.

      • Still cheaper/close to many pcie 3.0 drivers

        • If we are talking about $20 (see the $268.7 deal link I posted as an example). To be fair, this SSD's sustained write is the same as my slowest external USB 3.0 NVMe SSD (250MB/s) so it is certainly still acceptable to me.

Obviously, if you are comparing to currently available deals, it looks good.

Waiting for sweet 2 TB pcie3 ssd for $200

  • +1

Found this long term review in PS5 use.
    https://youtu.be/V3patXl_SeQ

    • With console games not really requiring top notch PCIe gen 4 SSDs, and Sony simply just checks for PCIe gen 4 support, cheap PCIe gen 4 SSDs are attractive. It's a pity there aren't any cost effective E19 based 2TB SSDs. The lowest we've seen was 1TB TLC based for $109 (E19). However, the 2TB version of them are just too expensive. If they come up at $220 mark, the decision is going to be tough (E19 with 2TB TLC vs E16 with 2TB QLC, E16 is a better controller, E19 SSDs so far are yet to get the QLC cost cutting).

Non Sony games are unlikely to require top speed (because they will most likely be for PC, Series X, so the games cannot be that aggressive). Even for first party games, due to the small internal SSD size, Sony would go for heavy compression (Kraken) and if the game assets are heavily compressed, then would it really need super fast large file reads constantly?

    I don't have a laptop that runs these……

I do notice most laptop only have 512 SSD, You have to go to high end model that is over 2K before you start seeing 1TB let alone 2TB but with price like this, why not more laptop has 1tb / 2tb SSD? This just shows how sting laptop manufacturers are!!

  • My PS5 is out of space and I just signed up to PS+ to get access to the broader games library… to buy or not to buy. It sounds like it'll work, but there's no guarantee it won't get nerfed in the future.

    • nerfed in what way?

      • +1

PS5 software updates suddenly block drives which don't meet Sony's specific requirements.

        • If they haven't done it already the chances of that happening are pretty much non existent, if anything they would introduce it with ps6 at a hardware level.

I wouldn't even worry about it.

          • @garetz: Ended up deciding to order one… figured even if it isn't as fast, but it works, that'll do since I don't think I'll put my regular/important games on there anyway… and should it stop working in the future, it'll easily find a home in my desktop PC.
