Would these be any good as computer speakers on the side of the desk?

    • They would sit at a weird height with respect to the desk.

      • +2

yes, you'd have to stand them on something high enough to so that the bottom driver is well clear of the desk surface. then they become (deep breath): Stand-mounted-floor-standing speakers.

        • If that bottom speaker is purely low end I doubt it'd make much difference being lower than the desk. Bass isn't anywhere as directional as higher frequencies.

Though I agree with the below, most traditional speakers aren't meant to be listened to so closely.

    • +2

For desktop use listening at low volumes I would recommend a nearfield speaker system that uses a DSP. I went from floorstanders to the iLoud Micro speakers and wouldn't go back. These little things put out much nicer bass at low volumes.

    • id get some S3000 pro's
around the same price, unsure how to compare performance. but for desktop usage they plug into usb and it's gg
these speakers appear to be a f-around

    • You need nearfield monitors

  • These would be amazing for computer speakers, they are passive so you will need a small amp to drive them. they are very efficient..

    • +9

That is the sales guy for ya!

      • +2

lol imagine pretending floorstanding is a amazing for computers. Maybe for some, but doubtful for most.

        • Even Google Images struggles to find examples. I did find one though…

It's ridiculous. When sitting at the desk, you'd be nowhere near the sweet spot. I don't know why anyone would do this.

          • @cerealJay: Yeah it'd be extremely niche. More likely for people that use their screen as a tv too, and for when sitting back away from it on a couch, or for music listening in a comfy chair away from the pc.

    • Could you please recommend one that does not cost an arm and a leg and can handle 5.1 for future upgrades. Thanks

      • +5

What is an arm and a leg worth these days? I think a price range would more helpful.

        • Should it factor for inflation as well?

        • Back in my day, they cost a buck o fitty and you got a can of cola and chips with them.

      • +1

Your 5.1 requirement means you need an AV Receiver - https://www.rio.com.au/product/onkyo-tx-sr393-5-2-channel-av… is the cheapest they offer.

        • Thanks, that is pretty much the budget for it.

      • Not sure what type of budget you're looking at but for a 5.1 amplifier you could certainly look at the Onkyo TX-SR393 which we currently have at $490 :)

These would be amazing for computer speakers,

      No they wouldn't.

      • Just to hear the clicks of edge explorer or windows opening office programs! Awesome!!!

    • So for the thirds rule, you want to sit with your desk in the back 1/3 of the room facing the middle of them room. Who on earth would have the office setup this way

  • IMHO these are floor standing speakers meant to be part of a decent Hi-fi system and not for use with a computer. If you read the blurb you'll understand that. For starters they're nearly a metre tall, weigh 15.2kg.and you'll need a decent Amplifier to power them.Consider a Bookshelf type speaker instead….how about the powered OzBargain favourite,Edifier speakers?

    • The only edifier I like are the s3000 but for some reason I think the canton ones here are better value. Am I wrong?

      • better value depends on your perspective. If you want active bookshelf speakers then passive floorstanders aren't good value, regardless of whether they're a good price.

For what its worth, Canton, IMO, make incredibly high quality gear. Absolutely love their stuff. Their subs, and mini theatre systems etc and then their big boy gear- is all very very very good quality. Underrated brand.

    • +1

      No doubt.

But floor standing speakers are no longer popular. I have a great pair of Sony floor standing speakers in storage. They sound amazing. I tried selling them for dirt cheap but nobody wants floor standing these days. Even cash converters didn't want them for any price.

      • +1

Most people's needs are covered by soundbars. Most people also are fine with 720p streaming and low resolution sound - the space and complexity of floor standing speakers are not enough (for those people) to justify the sound quality

      • +3

        Maybe cuz they're sonys?

      • Floor standing speakers takes up too much space. High end bookshelves speakers and some sound bar are just as good.

  • +1

Floorstanders as computer speakers isn't overkill if that's the sound you're after. I personally don't like subs for music so I use floorstanders as a stereo pair only to get a fuller sound.

any deals on budget subwoofers rep?

    • hello we have a few awesome deals at the moment including Canton and M&K …. they are quality and built to last, which is important

  • When are we likely to see stock of the Onkyo RZ50?

    • sorry for the delay we have been quite busy, they are coming very soon but you will need to put a pre-order as most stock is sold now, with next lot coming in Dec with a price rise… :( I hope this helps

  • Random question since I'm banned from making new forum posts - what would be a good budget speaker setup for karaoke with wireless mics and to play movies from a projector?

    • Q Acoustics Q3010i Bookshelf Speakers @ $350
      Yamaha NS-SW100 Subwoofer @ $400
      Yamaha RX-V385 5.1-Channel AV Receiver @ $450
      Total ~$1200

That's cheapest I could find while still being decent and a good home theatre starting point. On receiver you'd set crossover to 80hz and bookshelf speakers to "small". This way they handle just mid-high and 10" subwoofer does the rest. No idea about the karaoke system though.

  • What would be a recommended Amp to drive these bad boys?
