Battery life is not good enough on this model. How I miss my Huawei mate 20 pro šŸ˜¢…

    • +1

Are you in VIC, did your mate 20 pro work with myki?

      • +1

While not exactly what you asked, my P30 (same Kirin 980 chipset) worked fine with Myki through Google Wallet when I was there briefly.

      • +1

I am in Melbourne, and my Huawei P30 Pro works perfectly fine with Myki, and all other apps in Play Store too !

      • +1

My mate 20 pro works with Myki. Not sure why it wouldn't? It has NFC.

        • Is yours the optus variant? NFC works for everything else except myki

          • @chillipaste: Yes Optus variant.

            • @brifog: hmm interesting, might do a factory reset, it's never worked for me. thanks for the info.

      • +1

That's interesting actually. I have the mate 20 pro still and it doesn't work with Myki, but pretty much every other NFC function works.

        • +1

exactly same thing with me - all other NFC functions work except myki, did you have the Optus variant?

Huawei phones were a game changer ahead of their time…

      • +1

Unfortunately, The US government killed this competition.
No Huawei anymore, at least for another few years.

        • +2

No Huawei, no competition. Samsung selling shit phones and consumers can't do anything about it.

      • I totally agree with you!

    • I miss my H P20 pro. Camera was so good. Battery life, best i've had and this phone was made years before this S21 model.

I don't get why the S21 FE selfie camera is better than the back camera. Blows my mind sigh

    • was a great phone
      mine died after 3 years

    • Huawei…….let's line the pockets of the CCP so they can bully more people…..

      • -1

Mate, Keep politics aside. FYI Apple(US company) is still made in China.šŸ¤”

        • +3

Apple silicon is produced at TSMC, which is located in Taiwan.

The CCP threatened to completely stop manufacturing/assembling Apple products in China unless Apple began referring to Tawian (e.g. Taipei, Taiwan) as China (Taipei, China) instead, which Taiwan is very much against doing; it's almost as sad/funny as banning Winnie the Pooh lol.

Samsung brand has tarnish since S7 nothing worthy after that model

    • +12

Literally no one is cross shopping a flagship tier Samsung and some dodgy Xiaomi that's selling for over $400 less. Useless comment.

      • +20

While you are probably correct, the Xiaomi is not "dodgy".

      • Brands aside, the Samsung (Ex 2100) is over twice as fast (as Dim 700) and has an AMOLED screen.

      • +3

Haha I was, very recently. I ended up going for the Xiaomi because I couldn't justify paying more.

        • You could've got the S21 FE for a few hundred, even $100 using the Samsung store hacks I posted early on.

          • @Techie4066: Yes, for eligible people, phone plans or trade ins there were some good deals going for sure.

            • @AlanHB: You didn't actually need to trade in. Asurion didn't place hold charges.

          • @Techie4066: Interested in the Samsung store hacks. Can you share the link please?

            • -3

              @Undecided: No. Check my posts.

              • @Techie4066: Ah posts ok thanks. I was checking your comments thinking 'early on' means today šŸ˜Š

                • -2

@Undecided: No worries. Going by your question I thought you might've been one of those long-time lurkers who can't help themselves.
You'll see a table in the last one I posted. Samsung started patching over loopholes so it broke at that stage. With trade-in values the grand total could reach <$150.

                  • @Techie4066: Just read that post. It's very helpful. Have seen these Samsung trade-in deals before but never clicked on it as my phone was working fine. Need a new phone now though so I'm keen. Thanks again for your help!

      • +1

        Username doesn't check out!

  • I'm not sure what's been patched on this phone but didn't initial reports say that it overheats during regular use, has terrible battery life, and has UI stutter issues?
Price seems decent but unless there have been some major patches to improve the things listed above, you might be disappointed

    • +2

A73 $597 a good alternative if these are concerns. The midrange Snapdragon in a73 would not have the overheating or battery issues.

      • +2

6.7" screen is too big for my liking. Even the 6.4" on the S21 FE is a stretch for me. I'm a bloke with average sized hands. Not sure how women can use current phones. I guess they are forced to buy iPhones

        • Although a73 has bigger screen it's bezels are slimmer (~87% screen to body ratio) so the overall size of the phone is not too different from s21 fe.

          • @silenthillrocks:

It's bezels are slimmer (~87% screen to body ratio)

No they aren't. S21 FE has 89.6% screen to body ratio. The A73 is ~7% larger in area (12,458 vs 11,600 mm2)

      • +1

I've been looking at both the a73 and a53 and really like the features/price for them both, just sadly missing wireless charging which I currently use all the time (but maybe I wouldn't need it considering the a73 battery..?)
Will probably end up holding on to my current phone for another year or so until something like the a53/a73 gets wireless charging and UFS 3.1 storage.

    • +9

Haven't had overheating issues but the UI stutter is bad, searching for apps and opening them is slow, battery life is ok. It feels a bit like using a 5 year old phone.

Very dissapointed with it. Only silver lining was I only paid $170 using coupons and Samsung trade in.

      • Sorry to hear that - at least others can read about your experience and make an informed choice

      • Yes searching for apps is slow! The app drawer sucks so searching is usually the fastest way to get to an app! On my P30 I could easily just scroll through my app drawer to the bottom. Now I have to swipe through each page of apps!

Good device, 4 android updates 5 yr security with Amazon warranty.

  • +1

Exynos is still shxt after so many iterations, will skip until it uses Snapdragon chip made by TSMC again.

    • -1

      This 5G version uses Snapdragon

      • +3

No it is using Exynos 2100.

      • +2

That was only for s20 fe

  • +26

There are a number of deals currently for the Samsung A73 for $600, both phones will receive approximately the same number of OS updates (both shipped with Android 12 and are guaranteed 4 os updates). Full comparison between the two phones here: https://nanoreview.net/en/phone-compare/samsung-galaxy-s21-fā€¦ But the main differences are:

    • The FE has a slightly smaller battery (4500 mAh vs 5000 mAh)

    • The FE has overall better hardware (better memory, cpu and faster storage)

    • The FE has a better camera

    • The FE has has wireless charging which the A73 doesn't

So the main thing is that the A73 should technically have longer battery life, if that's more important to you than the other features then I'd recommend the A73

    • Thanks for this.

    • +1

Great post, would upvote twice if I could!

      • +3

        I up-voted for you

    • +1 thanks

    • +5

Another important point I completely forgot: The A73 has expandable microSD storage but the FE doesn't

    • Probably should mention that the A73 has a marginally larger screen too which very slightly offsets the bigger battery.

Of course that means a bigger device too - the S21 FE is already bordering on the largest size I'd be willing to accommodate, so the A73 is too big for my personal preferences.

      Visual comparison here

      S21 FE: 155.7 x 74.5 x 7.9 mm
      A73: 163.7 x 76.1 x 7.6 mm

      and for comparisons sake, S22 Ultra: 163.3 x 77.9 x 8.9 mm.

So closer in size to the largest Samsung flagship.

    • FE support DEX as well

      • What's DEX?

        • It's a nifty feature to switch your samsung (galaxy series) phone into a desktop mode. I use it frequently with my S10 and find it quite useful. Basically you just need to plug it into a usb c dock with monitor, keyboard & mouse attached to it and you have a lightweight desktop set up with all data from your phone readily accessible. Not all apps will work smooth (particularly games) but most typical ones like whatsapp, messages, gallery, email, browser, pdf reader, banking apps etc will work just fine.

      • Dex is good in theory only. Not very practical in reality. Id say 90 percent of people would never use it.

        • +1

With USB C monitors becoming more common, Dex will get much more use.

  • Anyone knows if it's dual or single sim? Amazon description doesn't seem to specify this.

    • it's dual sim. the sim tray is double-sided.

      • Interestingly, the second question under Customer questions & answers read:

Is s21fe a dual sim phone?
        Answer:
        No this model.

        • Interesting. I thought it was dual sided but I just tried to put it in the back of my tray and was unsuccessful. No dual sim and no snapdragon processor! Us Aussies have been jibbed!

  • Jeez - i wont be in a hurry to pricematch with OW again. That was long, painful and ultimately was rejected. Bad luck or is it always a fight? Too hard for me

    • +1

Probably because Amazon does not have the model # in the description?

OW will reject 99.9% of the time if they dont see an exact match of the model #

      • +1

spot on - that was the issue. Just went with Amazon

I'll never stray from you again Amazon! xxx

        • +2

          Jeff Bezos approves

    • I successfully got price beat at Officeworks in Eastern Suburbs of Melbourne. Worth a try! Was no hassle at all.

    • I know. I stopped bothering as well. Make you feel like a criminal for trying to do what they try so hard to encourage you to do in their commercials.

    • I find it's easier to ask for price beat when I call them rather than in-store. My experience so far they asked for the website, saw it's in stock & asked if I want to go ahead with the order. Was surprised how smooth it went.

  • Flipping typical. I bought this exact phone from Harvey Norman like two weeks ago

  • Worth upgrading from the 20FE?

    • +9

      no

    • Definitely not.

    • +1

      100% No, especially if already on a S20FE 5G which has SN865

      • That's the one I'm on. OzB'ed it through the cancellation loophole. Those were the days…

  • Does this have a Snapdragon processor?
Is this an upgrade from S20 FE 5G?

    • +1

It doesn't have the Snapdragon and doesn't look like an upgrade at all from what other people have told me. If it was an upgrade and had a Snapdragon CPU, I'd buy it no problem. I'm stuck on the A73, the S21 FE and Pixel 6a, but the more I learn/read about them, I don't want any of them even for their current prices let alone what they were selling for before these specials.

I haven't bought a phone for a few years, but I am surprised how crappy phones are in this price range. It seems you have to spend $1000 plus to get a decent phone from all the comments I'm reading. Would much rather spend that money on my PC than get a mediocre phone for $500-$700. Definitely don't want to spend $1000+ just to get a decent phone. The value for money seems to be garbage on the current models from Samsung, Google etc. in the midrange.

Got for $630.80 at officeworks- thanks Op!
