Mate was trying to book using Qantas app, virgin app and Jetstar, from Perth to GC. He uses combination of cash and points for Qantas and virgin.

Qantas app kicked him out when just about to purchase the flight, and had to start again, but same flight then listed at $80 more. Got to purchase button again, and AGAIN kicked out of purchase back to main app home screen, then another 100,000 points to purchase the exact same flight! ALL WITHIN 10 MINS.

So he went to use virgin app, same exact thing happened once, but went up $100. He just bailed straight out in anger.

So he went to use Jetstar and found it's just as expensive as the others. Chose Jetstar after all out of pure frustration.

I'm an app and software dev, and I can see someone saying "make it so if we change the price up, it kicks them out and makes them restart the transaction. If it lowers, just keep them in transaction…"

I'm a developer as well in the travel industry and have previously worked at Qantas. That's just not what they do (intentionally at least). Flight prices change many, many times a day - to the extent sites and apps (even Qantas for their own systems) have to cache prices at times. Then you click it and it re-pulls the latest data and bugger, prices have (usually) gone up. Depending on your GDS from Amadeus/Sabre other airlines/agencies are all selling tickets on Qantas's behalf as well - there's so much ticket variation that odds are you don't pay the same as the person next to you on the flight, as the story goes.

It's frustrating, but if you're interested, ITA Software wrote a presentation on the topic (Before being acquired by google): http://www.ai.mit.edu/courses/6.034f/psets/ps1/airtravel.pdf

      • The presentation is surprisingly an interesting read. Thank you.

      • Yeah I agree it's not likely, but the app has never done this before and each time prices changes in a matter of minutes quite dramatically. Surely it's fair to lock it in for a certain amount of time for a customer session, and maintain that as static for the customer, like "resume your order".

  • many deal posts
could we just use your site for all deals
or are these links deal-specific? cheers

    • +2

Sometimes deal specific, but yes, they're available (often cheaper) through searches on my site. Each website is limited to 2(ish) self-posts on ozbargain a week though, so when I've maxxed out I may as well share to the other sources - a deal is still a deal to be shared!

  • No Canberra either.
