    HODL

    • +14

HODL forever unless you actually need it or have performance problems. My 4 year old card can run everything max, who cares if it is +50% faster, 100 fps or 150fps is still more than enough. Nothing pushing hardware much nowadays anyways.

      • +19

        I care

        • +3

How are you downvoted for that, astounding. There's plenty of scenarios where people want and benefit from the most capable tech. What is this, tech humility? jesus.

          • @TsundereGuy: It’s amazing what some nobs on here will downvote

      • -1

Exactly. Very few games actually utilise these cards properly, so there is no point to rushing it.

      • +1

Yep. My second hand (but as new basically) 1080ti is still doing extremely well for itself at 2k. I wish I had RTX but I'm not gonna pay $1000 for the privilege.

      • Ageed. I HODLed until I absoultely needed one to play Elden Ring. Still paid a fortune for it compared to the current price but at least I got so much fun out of it and I don't regret at all.

      • -2

        Nice downvotes should talk less

        • Hodl should talk less and earn more money.

    • +7

curious what price you lot are holding for? Are you expecting $400 3090s? You're gonna keep holding till that 3090 is only good for 20fps in new games, then what? you gonna hodl for the 5080?

      • +7

lol thats what people do here. They keep HODL and then when a new card comes out they will say its too expensive and HODL and the cycle continues. They will never buy it. Its pathetic really. If you want it, buy it.

        • +2

It’s actually bad management of money. If you have the money to buy this there’s no reason to HODL. If you don’t have the money why are you buying a $1k discretionary pc part.

          • +3

@killingtime: It’s called PPPM, or Piss Poor Peasant Mentality and it’s a real burden for some.

      • New gen coming out in a few months. New features, more powerful, and expect a step change in price to performance ratio.

Looking to purchase ~1.2k on a 7800xt / 4080 equiv. For 2 to 3 hundred more, than this card, which could get at least 50%+ better output.

If you have a gpu that's running fine may as well wait a few months.

        • +5

Zero chance of a 4080 being $1200 in the next 10 months. Everyone seems to think Nvidia and third parties have suddenly become bros but I highly doubt they won't try to maintain high priced GPUs. You can say no one will buy but they will. We have $2000 phones that do the same thing as $300 phones and people still buy the crap out them.

I would not be surprised at a $1800 4080 price tag.

          • -1

@Zorololo: If only you knew the secret sauce my friend

          • @Zorololo: I hear you.

Everyone has their reasons for buying if they charge 2k and im fine with my existing monitor / gpu / game requirements will pass. Maybe even go down the stack. The question everyone will need yo answer is the 2k vs utility of the gpu. Will you pay 2k to play computer games. Does nvidia believe people will pay 2k for a single compenent to play computer games.

Even though i have an nvidia card now, im heavily leaning on AMD gpu. The power draw on nvidia not looking pretty.

Need to drive a 3840 x 1600, 144hz. Pretty sure a lesser card could do the job.

      • +1

Top end card shouldn't be more than $1500 on launch these 2k-3k cards are a joke and there just robbing you blind that's the truth you can brag about how much money you have or bla bla they aren't worth the price they released with if they were there's no way they'd be down to the prices they are now if they were actually worth that originally

  • +4

What (tf) does 'HODL' stand for? That is the question.

    • +15

HODL is an acronym for "Hold On for Dear Life". It is used in the crypto ecosystem to refer to a strategy of holding onto bitcoin holdings through its various price fluctuations and volatility.

In this context it means holding off the purchase — and waiting for a further price drop.

      • +23

Oh….I thought it was a reference to hodor…..from game of thrones….I'm not down with the lingo.

        • Likewise thought it was from GOT. I have a 2080ti that was purchased late 2020 ($699 after being $1800-$2100 for a while). Intending for it to go into my next pc, whenever I decide on what I will build next. I don't always use it to its fullest potential (don't always use 2160* nor do I turn on every setting eg: ambient occulation is generally turned off as I get motion sickness with it on), yet I'd consider a 3080/3090 on the cheap if it meant a fps increase for my gaming lol.

      • +26

I'm sure it was a typo that became an acronym.

        • +19

Yeah, I always thought it was a typo for HOLD!

        • +7

          Copy paste from
          https://academy.binance.com/en/glossary/hodl
HODL was originally a spelling mistake by a user named ‘GameKyuubi’ on BitcoinTalk. In the original BitcoinTalk thread titled “I AM HODLING,”

          GameKyuubi wrote:

I type d that tyitle twice because I knew it was wrong the first time. Still wrong. w/e. GF's out at a lesbian bar, BTC crashing WHY AM I HOLDING? I'LL TELL YOU WHY. It's because I'm a bad trader and I KNOW I'M A BAD TRADER.

The meaning of the meme has evolved over time, and I think Ozbargain community itself has somehow warped / changed it's meaning. It's originally used for crypto but somehow it now refers to holding off buying something for fear of overpaying.

        • +1
      • Cheers Scrimmers. When I Googled it all I could find was 'hold on for dear life' … but that makes zero sense in the context of holding off on buying something while hoping for a price drop, so I assumed there must be some other definition. Evidently not.

        • gotta hodl your money till good prices from crypto crash

        • What doesn't make sense is wtf happened to the the f from for!!! Guess HOFDL wasn't as catchy….

        • There are a bunch of annoying people who have overused the stupid term here.
It's probably the most annoying side to this site.

    • https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=375643.0 - this is where it originated from.

    • +1

HODL is the epitome of stupidity in terms of GPU hodl.

      • 'HODL' just does not make any logical sense at all in this context. How does your 'dear life' depend on the price of some of your shares/etc.? I am dutifully memorising all the new 'short-hand' acronyms that are flying around these days because no one is typing on keyboards anymore, and it is 'doable' if they are used in a way that makes logical sense.

Maybe this ludicrous one came into common usage because it is a play on the age-old terminology pertaining to HOLDing shares/stock …? As in 'a shareholder' … or 'Who is still holding, and who is selling' (etc.)?

        Aaaanyways. Totes redic.

        • +1

HODL was originally coined by crypto trader/miner. They refused to sell their coins at low price during bear market, hence holding on to it to dear life.

HODL in terms of GPU makes no sense. They got no GPU, what are they holding on for? nothing? They don't even have enough money to buy 3080 nor 6900 XT. nothing to HODL.

HODL in terms of GPU makes no sense. They got no GPU, what are they holding on for?

Holding off buying the GPU while awaiting a price drop.

        • +1

It's just a typo of hold lmao

  • +4

    Should add 10gb to title.

  • +1

This version is missing the Y. I'd skip it.

  • +1

not good enough. at least for this model

  • +1

nearly. waiting for the post 40xx prices.

  • -6

    HODL until $500

  • +10

It's finally happened, sub $1k, I'm so happy
    Still not buying

  • -5

I bought a $350 Galax 1660 Super and I'm happy with it, but I wouldn't get a $999 card if it's warranty is anything like the 2yr mine came with.

I also wouldn't care about the savings from a retailer that doesn't have an RMA AusPost parcel printout system.

  • -1

I kinda need to see a detailed analysis of the 40xx series before I make a decision.

  • bet you $5 they will be $799 soon

    • +3

bet you $799 they will be $5 soon

      • -1

        fantastic, I'll take cash!

    • dreaming.

    • Ill happily lose a fiver for a 799 3080 :)

    • +5

      3090s to hit ~1200 bracket

      3080s to hit ~800 bracket

Oversupply + heavy price cuts direct from nvidia EOM

Tehy arent hitting their profit targets and margin is MASSIVE on GPUs. They will freefall further.

      Exhibit A: $1000 2080tis

  • +1

    Heheh boi

  • +1

I bought the $500 Asus 3060 from them on Monday and got it on Thursday without any problems. Just thought I should mention it since the last thread had people worried about how reliable they were.

There's a slight chance that the box was already opened since one of the stickers seemed loose, but it's probably just my paranoia since I was a bit worried that the deal seemed almost too good to be true compared to everywhere else's prices.

  • +1

This would of been an OK deal if it were the 12gb model. The 10gb version isn't going to age very well. Won't be long before the 12gb model is under $1000, that would be a much better buy

  • Damn it, I should have waited instead of paying $1139 almost 2 years ago! At least mine is full hash rate :D

    • Kidding right?

  • +1

So pretty much crypto died in ass now cards have come down and they probably have either oversupply or low relative sales for what they got tooled up to make. Love it. These will drop hard.

    • +1

      Crypto is far from dead.

    • +2

      Arse. FFS.

  • +2

Nobody needs anything. However those of us running 4k 120hz OLED panels would go from 25fps to 160fps if we jump to a 4090 when it comes out.

We don't need more than 2fps. But it's nice to have playable fps on modern screens with modern features.

    • +1

      2fps??

  • I bought the 1080 at EOL for ~$700 and it's done me quite well, im hoping I can do the same with a 3080…

    • +1

get the 12gb, dont waste your money on the 10gb

      • +4

Are you saying this because of the lifespan the extra 2gb affords? I haven't seen a significant difference between the 10 and 12 as far as fps goes. Genuine question.

        • +3

The 12gb 3080 isn't just extra ram, it also comes with more cuda cores so actually performs a little better than the 10gb version.

  • +1

My wife and I agreed I do a major upgrade this time next year so I'm hodling

    • Nice. Anything else about you and your wife you’d like to tell us that you think we should know?

      • -1

Should hodl having sex until he can afford to buy a gpu.

  • -1

Do u really need this ? Got to much money or obsessive

  • $150 more for arguably the best RTX 3080 incase anyone was interested. The Asus GeForce RTX 3080 ROG Strix for $1,149 - https://www.centrecom.com.au/asus-geforce-rtx-3080-rog-strix….

Good to see prices slowly reducing.
