      No security updates either.

Do you still get the unlimited 'storage saver' quality Google photo backup with these refurbished phones, or are they like one-off activations from original owners? Have seen some mentions of people setting up sync jobs from their newer phone to old Pixels, but not sure if Google has closed that loophole recently

    • those options gone on all pixels

      • +1

        Ahh damn. Thanks for confirming!

I've got a pixel 1 as a backup machine. Syncthing doesn't really work if you take alot of media on your main phone (both folders have to be "synced" if you want it to be seamless and truly automatic), unless you're happy to wipe your main phone when the pixel wipes all backed up data.

I've uploaded over 600gb using the pixel, doesn't matter who's used the phone, any account you sign in using the phone won't count storage. Think of it like a back-door to a paid theme park.

          • @krisspy: Okay, I was thinking more of a one way sync/copy job from the main phone to the pixel rather than trying to keep both phones' camera folders in sync. I currently do something similar with Foldersync to home NAS

That's good to hear yours is still working!

@supercules: Yep you can have the main phone set to "send only" and pixel as receive only.

But I guess the problem arises when the pixel gets full you'd have to wipe the media. Now syncthing doesn't know what's already backed up and what's not so it'll just try and copy everything.

There might be an app that can set parameters where main phone only sends the last week or last days files I haven't really looked hard into fully automating it.

But just to warn you: retrieving files from Google is a major (profanity) PITA. Google has a feature (take out) where it'll download everything you have on your photos but… Alot of files were missing when I took everything out before re-uploading through the pixel. Thankfully I noticed this before all my media expired in google photos recycling bin. This is a known issue, it's not a reliable way to getting bulk media out. You have to manually select all the media and hit download (pain if you're talking thousands of pic/vids).

Plus when you use takeout you get 3 files per photo, the picture itself, the exif data and Google's data (location etc). You need to use a program to add the exif data back in

              • @krisspy: I've taken a bit more of a look and it seems that this loophole may be more trouble than it's worth. I was hoping to mount an external storage via USB OTG but Google only allow sync via the internal storage.

This poster outlines the varying attempts he's made, and highlights that using the phone to sync all the time this way may also eventually burn out the memory storage NAND

                • @supercules: Yeah it's a bit of work, imagine having to manually upload 600gb+ of data when the phone has 17gb usable space lol.

I was on the 200gb tier of google one and was about to go over, figured it be cheaper to spend $100 instead of a new subscription.

        Wrong.
        Pixel 1 - unlimited original
Pixel 2 - 5 still get free storage saver.

This was after the changes google made.

I've got a pixel xl as a backup whore

    • Yes, you do.
I have a pixel 1 and pixel 3, both still got unlimited storage (original quality for pixel 1 and storage saver quality on pixel 3). It doesn't matter who the original owner was or how it was activated. If you backup a photo with these phones, that photo won't consume any of your google account storage. As simple as that.

  • How many of these are still out there? Seems like every other week there are old pixel 3 deals!

  • Any pixel 1 available in good condition?

  • Are there any with new oem batteries? I have a pixel 3 and its perfect except the battery life is terrible, I replaced the battery however after 2-3 months it was terrible again

  • +1

Don't buy a pixel 3 they have the flash memory wear issue. Imagine my partners surprise when one morning the screens gone black and there is no possible way to revive it. Can't get any of your data off it, it's now just a brick. People report just over 24m use is when the flash chips start to fail, conveniently Google claims two years is fair life for flash memory so no obligation under ACL to rectify.

    • So this is what happened to my phone!!! Thanks! It was doing my head in not knowing why it died all of a sudden

  • Has the deal ended? Can't seem to get the discount to apply in cart

    • I'm also wondering if the deal's ended. I'm unable to get the price to reduce.

  • Is the deal still available?

  • If deal has ended it should show Expired.

  • anything on grade b specials?
