Credit Card (Qantas edition) Pro-rata refund of annual fee list

Hi all,

I went on a bit of a CC (Qantas) craze and racked up a nice sum of Qantas points.

Just want to share with you all the CC that allows Pro-rata refunds of the annual fee:

  • Qantas Premier Platinum - Pro-rata refund via telephone. You will need to call them up and ask for it. My account is about 1 and a half months old post-annual fee. I am getting about $190 back from $225. They will send the refund via cheque.

  • Westpac Altitude (Qantas) - Pro-rata refund via telephone & Live chat. You will need to ask for it. My account is about 2 months old post-annual fee and I was able to get the full annual fee back ($49). They will transfer it to a nominated bank account within 3 bd.

  • NAB Qantas Premium Card - Pro-rata refund via telephone & Live Chat. You will need to ask for it. My account is about 2 months old post-annual fee and I was able to get the full annual fee back ($250). They will transfer it to a nominated bank account within 10 bd.

Other users experience

  • @Autonomic - ANZ - telephone - Full refund after 2 months post-annual fee payment.

Comments

  • Nice one - I'm about to hop on a new card soon after completing my ANZ Black spend (unsure if they pro-rata refund but will update accordingly if yes)

  • +3

ANZ refunded me the total annual fee of their FF black card.

    • How long after paying for the annual fee did you close the account? Ill add it to the list :)

      • I need to know that too, thanks.

        • Yes, just got approved for ANZ black and need to know too!

      • I was charged annual fee on first statement. Called to refund it on as soon as I received second statement and points.

        Opened 28/6 & closed 17/8. Annual fee was charged 12/7 I believe.

  • I just cancelled my NAB Qantas Premium Card last month on live chat and didn't ask for it and got the pro-rata refund of the annual fee.

    • Sorry, just curious, where did your refund landed to if you never asked for it?

  • Qantas Premier Platinum - Pro-rata refund via telephone. You will need to call them up and ask for it. My account is about 1 and a half months old post-annual fee. I am getting about $190 back from $225. They will send the refund via cheque.

Pretty sure this is a white-label (former) Citibank card. I've found that Citibank will refund as long as you ask for it (I did it via Livechat on a Citibank Premier).

You can also use Payall and earn points (at 0.5/$1) whilst paying to a bank account - not sure if it counts towards min spends though.

    • You can also use Payall(www1.citibank.com.au) and earn points (at 0.5/$1) whilst paying to a bank account - not sure if it counts towards min spends though.

      It does.

  • Im guessing AMEX don't offer any of these refunds as they have travel credit in some of their card offerings? Is it just me or their personal cards their offers don't seem great at the moment.

    • It also harder to grind for AMEX. If you're getting AMEX, i recommend doing for LT and do it for their benefits.

      • +1

I'd still recommend churning AMEX. Yes, you have to wait 18 months between cards, but each sign up bonus is typically 120K+ QFF points. No way you're going to get that from regular spend on AMEX during the 18 month cool off period unless you are putting business spend through it.

        • Rather than churn I tend to downgrade to the fee free card, a few months later I get an incentive to take out the ultimate card again. works out at about the same as getting the churn deals but you get to keep the amex card and benefits throughout.

          • @Poolprouk: How much do you spend on your card, also do they email you the offers?

            • @tess1988: 2-3k a month. When you say offers do you mean card upgrade offers (answer is no, usually mailed) or the normal $10 off $100 spend type offers (yes).

              • @Poolprouk: Are the upgrade offers as good as the sign up bonuses(that have the 18 month wait)? How long after downgrading on average to you get an upgrade offer?

                • @gym: Last deal was 60K QF points (3K in months spend) with I think a $200 discount off the annual fee. I usually get these on average 3-6 months after downgrading. I think the first time was 6 months and the subsequent 2 times about 4 and 3 months respectively. (first 2x was 40K points)

                  https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/694661 similar deal.

                • @gym: The upgrade didn't trigger a credit check either so that's a plus.

    • Amex will not refund your annual fee. But you can ask them for something to sweeten the deal to prevent you from cancelling. Last time they gave rewarded me with 30K MR points for not cancelling. The points arrived the next day, I spent them and cancelled a week later. Its always worth asking

  • Thank you, didn't know this was a thing. Still waiting for better bonus point offers to pop up though, trying to pick wisely for the next churn

  • What about St George?

    • +1

Bank SA refunded me a $29 annual fee.

  • Westpac waive the annual fee generally if you are a customer already - just need to apply via online portal =)

    • Can you tell us more? I tried to call someone about my annual fee in December for my Westpac altitude Qantas platinum and they said no dice

      • +1

Generally it's when you first apply and only for the first year, either a fee waive or reduced fee. The card page should show you the offer applicable for existing customers

  • Any idea if this would work on the NAB Qantas Rewards Signature card instead?

    • +1

Yeah I got a refund on that when closing the account

  • Got $425 annual fee refund for ANZ FF Black, four months after approval. Asked via live chat and they transferred it to my bank account.

    • i'm in the process to close out my ANZ FF Black now, am i better to ask via chat or just close it out in the app then ask?

      • +1

I usually contact them before cancelling.

  • interesting I just got a citi Prestige card for booking hotel and plane tickets and get points and free access to lounge,
I will see if I can cancel them when I come back and get a refund :-)

  • Great thread. TY all for sharing your experiences.

  • Thanks for thoughts

  • This is great but now makes life harder trying to pick the next Qantas card lol

  • Any idea on pro-rata refund for Qantas Premium Titanium?

    • Would like to know this also

  • Successfully claimed full refund from ANZ via phone including the Rewards program fee

    • I’m waiting on my final statement to figure out how much I got - but yep, managed to get some back

      • Same here, waiting for final statement
You should receive the full amount as ANZ don’t do pro-rata

  • +1

I was not successful in getting a prorata refund for Qantas premier platinum. The consultant even said that they weren't able to do it since 'i have received the bonus points already'.
Seems like they are cracking down.

  • +1

I was able to get a refund on the following cards.

    Westpac Altitude Qantas Black
    ANZ Frequent Flyer Black Qantas
    NAB Qantas Rewards Signature
    Citi Premier Qantas
    St George Amplify Qantas Signature
    Bankwest Qantas Platinum Mastercard
    HSBC Platinum Qantas Card
    Coles Rewards Mastercard

Also for AMEX you can receive 30k MR points on the AMEX Explorer card if you ask for something to prevent you from canceling. Then as soon as you receive them cancel anyways.

    Hope this helps

    • When did you get refund from
NAB? I attempted last week through live chat and was declined.

      • It was in November last year. They actually offered it to me without me even asking. So maybe things have changed

  • I tried using the search function but couldn't find a credit card pro rata refund for Velocity cards - does it exist? TIA!

  • Just tried pro rata refund for anz black via live chat and was denied. Is this a recent policy change?

    • +2

      Update: Called and was successful

      • did you cancel the card first or you call them to ask first?

        • I would like to know this as well

  • What reasons does everyone provide for getting a reduced/refund on the credit card?

    • +1

I just tell them, “why should I pay for 12 months fee if I only had the card for just 2 months.” Usually they don’t ask, and if they do, it’s not because they won’t refund you if the reason is not good enough.

    • +1

I go with the generic "oh I just don't really use the card that often". In my experience, even if they ask you why, they don't really seem to care or argue back.

      • may I ask did you cancel the card first or you call them first? thank you

        • +1

This is what I tell them, when calling them to cancel the card.

  • Just got my anz ff black fee refund approved over the phone (both the annual fee and the reward program fee)!

    • What number did you call?

  • Just got a pro-rata refund of both the annual card fee and the Qantas rewards fee for Westpac Altitude Qantas Platinum via live chat.

    • What did you say? I'm about to give this a shot too

      • Asked if a pro-rata refund of both the annual card fee and the Qantas rewards fee was available if I closed my credit card. Then proceeded to close it in the same live chat conversation.

        • Thanks, that worked.

  • +2

Got an annual fee refund on ANZ Rewards Black

    • Can you let others know how you did it? Ie, method of communication, what you said etc.

    • How !!! We were rejected for a pro rata refund 12 months ago…

      • I might need to update next month when I got the latest statement. I have called them and they said they will give a pro rata refund. However, the online customer said that they will not give refund as I have received the rewards. So will update next month. :)

        • Cool!!!

          • @drhip: Update on this: Managed to get my $320 AF refund.

            • @clayaa: Any tips on how? Just keep calling until someone agrees to give the refund?

              • @krazek: I just called them, might as well got lucky on the first try.

  • +1

Was declined in annual fee refunding my ANZ Rewards Black Qantas FF. Had the card for 3 months (2.5 if using the date of annual fee as the basis). Tried using the "why should I pay for 12 months when I only had it for a few months", to which they said the system would not let them as I had achieved the promotional offer. Tried mentioning that I was using it for big purchases rather than promotional points, but they would not budge. Did not bother to ask to escalate.

    • Was this via phone call?

      • Yes via phone. Ended up calling them back. They mentioned it's up to the banker's discretion. (So not a system…)

        • +1

I think it might be worth calling back and seeing if the next rep will do it for you.

          • -3

@Koipanda: Called back the same day. The next person was not able to reverse the decision even if they wanted to. Next step was to submit a complaint case which I have done.

            • +2

@jraj: Whilst this site is about getting bargains, submitting a complaint to try and manipulate the system to get something that you aren't entitled to as per the terms and conditions of the offer isn't OK in my opinion. You get free bonus points or cashback etc and to then try and get a fee reversal or pro-rata fee reversal is going too far. Asking is probably OK - but if they say no - accept it. Yes they are a big organisation - but you need to act with some decency. Complaints should be made for genuine grievances.

              • @onceupon8: Fair feedback and thanks for putting things into perspective. My basis for the complaint is that if others have managed recently to get a refund on the same criteria, why have I been declined? Even the second rep had suggested submitting a case, which I agreed to, rather than the other way around.

I had not originally read through the full T&Cs that has been quoted below. It answers the refund question pretty clearly (maybe it was added recently/maybe it was always there).

It will be good to find out if there was any other factors I was not told originally that affected the decline. Otherwise I won’t proceed much further with the complaint.

    • ANZ has stopped the pro rata refund around 1-2 years ago… We had the same conversation as yours a year ago…

      • -1

I had ANZ refund my annual fee for Qantas Black card 7 months ago with no questions asked. Maybe because it was reward points and not Qantas?

  • ANZ quoted this to me when they declined the refund via live chat:

    /start
Additionally, for your request to have the Annual fee reversed as this has been charged within the first year that the account has been opened and you've received benefits such as cashback or bonus points, we are unable to reverse the fees. As part of the terms and conditions on using the credit card.

Under Clause 16.c of the Conditions Of Use states "(c) Any annual or other periodic fees are charged for the relevant year or period or any part of it. This means, unless we agree otherwise, that we will not refund them once paid, even if a Credit Card is cancelled or your Credit Card Account is closed."
    /end

So they don’t allow refunds if you got the bonus points apparently. I opened this card 5 months ago so I didn’t have very high hopes either way. I might try again from a pro rata angle.

Can confirm Westpac still offers full refund of the card fee if you cancel via telephone within the first month.

  • +2

Can also confirm St.George also offer full refund on annual fee when cancelling over the phone within the first month

    • Points in the first month too?

      • +1

Yes, full points in the first month and then full refund after first statement period.

    • Thanks mate! Just read your comment and gave them a call to close an Amplify Platinum.
$99 refunded and just let them know I don't use the card anymore. Open since Mid December 2023.

  • +1

Westpac - online chat approved refund of the whole (discounted) annual fee.

ANZ - phone help said they'd submit the request for refund of the whole annual fee. Result tbc. Not expecting it but never hurts to ask.

    • oh nice, did you manage to get it?

so i applied for the ANZ Frequent Flyer Black Credit Card 110,000 Qantas Points and $100 Back with $5,000 Spend in First 3 Months, $425 Annual Fee "https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/795434" but after cancelling after 3 months, they would only give me a pro rata refund so im only getting back $215 so in the end (assuming i get the refund) it would've just costed me $110 to get 110k qantas points (concidence on the 110 number lol)

i noticed this one currently one ANZ Frequent Flyer Black Credit Card 100,000 Qantas Points & $250 Back with $5,000 Spend in First 3 Months, $425 Annual Fee "https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/814239" which is not bad too if you can get the refund after.

But yeah the lady i spoke with ANZ said because you got the rewards plus the cashback, you not eligible but i argued with her lol of course YMMV

      • oh nice, did you manage to get it?

Don't know. ANZ closed off my internet banking immediately so there is no way of seeing the card balance.

The card closure letter states "If you have a balance in credit we will send you a cheque for the closing credit balance of the account (unless those funds have been remitted as unclaimed money in accordance with the law)."

Hopefully a cheque will turn up one day out of the blue.

they would only give me a pro rata refund

        Any amount is a bonus.

        • Received a final statement with nothing to indicate refund of the annual fee, but still hopeful :)

          • @UrMumsOnlyFan: Hi did you get the refund in the end? Just called them, the rep said they will credit the annual fee and reward program fee as refunds back into my credit card account but like you said there's no way to check given the account doesnt appear in online banking anymore

    • Tried to get refund via Westpac online chat but failed , tried again with another person online but both pointed that I have received the bonus point therefore they cant refund the fee.

      • +1

That sucks. Maybe try phone if you can be bothered.

        • Just gave them a call, and they approved the full refund for $124!

  • tried both phone call and message in App, no luck to get pro-rata refund. i had a qantas black card

“ The Annual fee and Rewards Program fee is payed up front and part of term's and condition.

This in Non-Refundable, and you were granted the promotional points and cashback.

Please speak with the Closure to check for options.

    Thank you.”
