why is movies coming to a streaming service a "bargain"?

    • +17

Where were you when these post happened for all the other streaming services. Yet you only speak out for Netflix?

        • +9

come on, we all saw Dune in cinemas or "streamed it elsewhere" almost a year ago…

Dune took in only US$11mil from Australian Box Office

Thor L&T took $15mil alone in the opening weekend

          • +5

            @spackbace: I still prefer the 1984 version.

            • +10

@raybies: While there are some aspects of the old movie that were good (score/cast/costumes) the new movie is far better (script/cinematography/special effects)

              • +1

@xavierod: New movie didn’t have Pug Atreides :(

            • +1

@raybies: David Lynch, the absolute genius of film.

              • +2

@PinzVidz: The '84 exuded class, uniqueness and immersion. even though it was essentially a theatre type cast. The '21 just felt cheap and lacking, and I didn’t like any of the cast; just compare Lady Jessica’s the later hardly worthy of a Bene Gesserit. I wasn't even wow'ed by the SFX, no space folding, no navigators… even the dragon fly heli that people were so impressed w/ felt like another missed opportunity, they used rigid wings instead of using the shield tech wings… could have saved a lot of structural engineers' face palming.
Still a good movie, but it could have been better.
Yes I know the SFX are much better in the '21 version BUT now days we're just limited by our imaginations.

            • +7

@raybies: Dune 1984 is free to watch on Internet Archive along with 15,000 other movies
              https://archive.org/details/Dune19843640x272435mb

              • @SuperGeek: You definitely get a +1 for opening my eyes to this free to watch archive.

          • +9

@spackbace: This is because it was severely delayed in Australia. It was released October in the US and on HBO Max streaming service, but in Australia we didn't have it "officially" available until Boxing Day 2021.

By the time it came out, everyone interested had seen it already through other means. Idiots in charge making stupid decisions have nobody to blame but themselves.

            • +3

@vicerum: Believe it or not but some people don't pirate, which accounts for the pos votes on this one

Yet goes to show the lack of popularity of the movie with the lack of pos votes compared to other streaming additions

          • +3

@spackbace: That's cause it was released on pirate bay in Dolby Vision 2160p 6 weeks before it came out in cinemas.

We got Love and Thunder 2 days BEFORE the USA wide release

            • @jonathonsunshine: I thought Thor Love and Thunder was just a really good CAM job? This was the best one that is apparently around back then (24 July 2022): "Thor Love and Thunder 2022 1080p V3 TELESYNC Line Audio X264 AC3 Will1869". I am waiting for the release next week.

              • @danielh: I meant that Thor4 came out in Australian cinemas 2 days before American cinemas vs Dune coming out in American cinemas + HBO Max (and therefore PirateBay) 6 weeks before it came out in Australian cinemas.

So, anyone in Australia who wanted to go and see Thor4 has no high quality viewing option apart from the cinemas where as for Dune, Australians ONLY high-quality option was piracy for 6 weeks.

        • +10

As it keeps getting repeated (But it's easier to just keep complaining), if you don't like posts like this just block the 'Streaming Service Addition' tag in your settings.

    • +35

Yeah i'm firmly in the no-bargain crowd.

Have been told to change posting subscription settings.

Good to see that netflix is finally getting something that isn't in house crap.

      • +15

Netflix has lots of good movies. Just because you don't like them doesn't make it crap.

        • +25

It's not just me that doesn't like them
The ratings are pretty abysmal for their in house stuff

          • +3

            @Drakesy: Yup agreed.
Those Netflix in house recommendation/browsing covered almost 80% of content. I became so irritated that I actually stopped my Netflix subscription.

Then came the Turkey chopper and been on-boarded since. To browse occasionally.

        • Just because you don't like them doesn't make it crap.

          Of course it does…

      • +6

I can’t remove it from the RSS feed, so here I am downvoting.

    • +11

      It's not

    • -3

Everyone please report these advertised fake bargains.
Hopefully they will start to get pulled.

      • +2

Not going to happen - this has been discussed plenty and mods put a friendly little set of instructions on how not to see these if you don't like them each time

    • +6

Apparently since SBS showing football world cup on free to air is also a bargain…

      • +5

You had no problem upvoting Thor being added to Disney plus. But you downvote this?

    • +1

I agree, it should be on a forum. It's certainly not a bargain as it's a crap movie

  • -4

"users who wish to block these posts…"

I'd suggest that would be 99.9% of the ozb userbase. Does this post qualify as a bargain, in any way whatsoever?

    • +43

i haven't seen 99.9% of people downvoting this, so your numbers might not be that accurate.

Somebody might have been thinking of buying the Bluray or digital version of this movie, so knowing it's going to be on netflix just saved them a couple of dollarydoos?

      • +8

The fact that you have to go out of your way to write a comment to be able to downvote a post would be a big factor.

        • and yet you do.

          • +16

@itstuan: And more should, because it might just then prove that these are not "deals"

            • -2

@Benoffie: They should and they already have. But the amount of people who enjoyed this post far outweigh the people who don't. There's nothing to prove here really. This has been discussed and if you don't like to see these. Just filter out in the settings and you won't see them again. No point complaining really.

            • -1

              @Benoffie: "Prove"

              Good luck with that

In the meantime, thank you for the water of your sweet, sweet tears

        • -8

You have to go out of your way to upvote it to. At the time of writing, 54 people had gone out of their way to upvote, and only 7 had gone out of their way to downvote. It appears to be very black and white that the majority of, but not all, OzB users would prefer these posts stay

          • +20

@Andrew87: Rubbish. An upvote is as simple as clicking the plus. A downvote requires that you have written a comment on the post before you vote on it.

            • +2

@ParmiAndChips: plus, my downvote was revoked by the system because people didn't agree with it…

            • @ParmiAndChips: And off course the negatives have more impact to decision making than the positive ones.

For once, I read negative comments of any deal which seems interesting. When rightly justified, even one negative comment is enough for me to ignore deal than 100 positive ones.

          • +1

@Andrew87: Oh! I actually did not know that - I don't actually log in to my account often, and just lurk. But I am bored at work and saw some old fashioned internet drama and decided to log in.

      • +1

Maybe they blocked "Additions to Streaming Services"

        • +1

You're this close to getting it

      • +2

I couldn't be bothered, but I will thanks to this. Not a bargain, just an announcement

    • +16

Does this post qualify as a bargain, in any way whatsoever?

To me it does. I have Netflix and was almost going to rent or buy this movie on iTunes.

Knowing it will come to Netflix saves me a few bucks.

      • -8

Also known as a digital release date… not really a bargain.

Its like you were going to rent a blockbuster VHS but you found out its going to be on free to air TV… would you also call that a bargain?

        • +3

Agree, if you were going to buy it maybe do some research to see if it's coming to one of your streaming services soon. If it isn't coming to your streaming service or it's too long to wait then buy it. Doesn't belong on OzBargain.

      • +2

Same - was literally about to rent. Now going to wait.

      • +4

People still buy or rent movies?

    • +3

Clearly you haven’t been on this site long enough. It’s not just about saving money or getting a bargain but letting the community know about new/positive changes so go away with your negativity.

    • +11

Its not a deal. Just a way to allow people to keep their "deal" post count up.

      • +2

Yeah so I can cash out at the end of the month.
O simply to inform other people there's a good movie coming up and free if you have subscription. Like every other good intention bargain posts on here. I suspect they haven't yet earned a cent. So thanks for your negativity.

        • +1

'simply to inform other people there's a good movie coming up' That makes sense, but sounds like a movie discussion forum.

        • -2

I generally agree with you, but the movie is not even worth a post.

          • @HunterBargainHunter: I tried watching it a while back and couldn't get onto it. I'm usually happy for my sci-fi to be a bit slow and a bit dry. But Dune always been too much drama, feels like MacBeth with aliens to me.

    • +1

Not going to vote either way but you gotta wonder. I mean if you have Netflix they're not exactly going to keep quiet about this one so you MAY notice a hugemungous banner for it..

      • +8

Not going to vote either way but you gotta wonder.

        votes negative

    • +2

I feel special now as I'm one of those 1 in 1000.

It's a deal because what once cost money now doesn't (for those with a Netflix subscription). I was about to rent it and will now just wait for the weekend.

    • +1

If that was true, these posts would never be upvoted enough to be featured on the main page. The fact that these posts are routinely upvoted shows that the more people like these posts.

      • +2

The community upvotes a lot of things that ozbargain moderators will remove for various reasons, does that mean we should unban that content?

    • I don't get why so many people are complaining. There are clearly people who find this post helpful and if you don't want to see posts like these, why do you find it so difficult in blocking them?

  • +10

This is not a bargain… you are paying for the subscription already…

    • +4

nobody says it's freebie. Bargain does not mean free!

    • +6

      Paying more than ever :D

  • -2

Thanks op for the post but i dont have netflix so i will skip this

    • -4

      Thanks for letting us know…

      • +2

        Thanks for nothing aye @jv

        • +4

          exactly…

  • +6

Watching new release movies not made by Netflix sucks as they don't stream it higher than HD and don't support DV/HDR even if you're on the top tier premium plan. Wish they would do what Amazon Prime does and stream all the movies in their catalogue in 4K/HDR

    • +1

Stan also to there credit has majority of films in 4k when available

    • +1

They don't? I don't feel so bad about only using the standard plan then. Either way, 4K upscaling on the NVIDIA shield is heaps good and makes higher res streaming almost redundant.

    • Really? That makes me feel a bit better buying it on iTunes a few weeks ago for $9.99 4K Dolby vision, Atmos etc etc.

      I will compare with interest.

  • +5

Now the next question is if it will be available in 1080p HD with a 5.1 track- or will it be a bargain 4k UHD HDR with an ATMOS track.

  • +23

This is not a bargain or anything that a reasonable customer wouldn't expect… A movie subscription service has movies.. more news at 11.

Whats next, posting that Hellofresh has Moroccan-Style Pumpkin & Garlic-Fetta Yoghurt this week?

    • +5

Does it? I'm considering signing up to Hellofresh and that would seal the deal, saving me money on having to purchase all the ingredients at Colesworths.

      • +4

Yes… but damn I'm missing out on internet points by not posting it as a separate deal!

        • +4

          You absolute madman! That's genius!

posts entire netflix catalogue, one movie at a time

          • -1

@lychnis: You keep threatening to do this, or claiming it’s something g that could totally happen

When are you going to put up?

            • @GrueHunter: my apologies, i didn't realise you had a schedule to keep

when would completion of the revamped site be good for you?

get back to me with a firm date and I'll get some quotes.

      • +3

You still have to go buy ingredients from colesworth, hellofresh always forgetting ingredients or they go bad quickly

Also this is not a deal, sub people already pay for and new content is expected

    • +4

"Whats next, posting that Hellofresh has Moroccan-Style Pumpkin & Garlic-Fetta Yoghurt this week?"

      But seriously… do they?

  • +4

    Program guides are not bargains…

    • -2

A bargain is a thing that is offered for a price that is lower than expected.

      • +3

I expect all my movies on Netflix to be free.

        • +1

So you get your netflix as free as well ?

          • @HolyCr4p: I did for the last 12 months.

  • +3

I think we're missing the other point, its only half a movie.

  • I brought a ticket to the movie hoping to see a batista bomb. I was disappointed that all I saw was floating blubber on the ceiling.

    • +2

So you ordered online and printed the ticket at home?

    • +2

"Gurney spent heaps of time training Paul, but has seemingly neglected to teach him to hit, or a avoid, a pedigree. 0/10"

  • +1

Thanks OP! Saw this in an email from Netflix this morning. Been wanting to re-watch this. :)

  • +22

We should have one page that shows a list of all new movies added to each different subscription service each month. Individual posts like these are not bargains.

  • +9

In what world did you think this was a bargain?

    • +3

Ozbargain world. Check out Borat, Spiderman, Uncharted and the recent Fifa on SBS that has over 750 upvotes (and many more…)

  • +19

I like being informed about these new movies/shows because I wouldn't have known about them otherwise. I know they're technically not bargains but I'd still like to see them on here. Keep them coming OP!

    • Exactly same here. Don’t have time to check Netflix daily for new movies so this is great news.
