    Wow! Cheap gaming monitor!

    • +22

I’m disappointed to find you can only display system resources. Thought it was a mini monitor you could extend your desktop over to

      • +11

Yeah would have got one in an instant for my rpi

      • +6

Check out the repo linked above, you can send any image across. Wouldn't work as a real monitor, but you can show anything that fits in an image and doesn't need a great refresh rate.

        • Be cool as a digital photo frame if there was some software to do that

          • +10

@hotphil: Use one of the free Python Udemy courses you've hoarded and implement it yourself.

    • Does it refresh at 144hz?

  • +8

    What not 4k? I'm out…

    • +12

AKA I didn't grow up in the 80/90's

      • -4

I grew up then and I wouldn't buy a non-4k monitor now, but that's because I want a my monitors to be stupidly big now, not that I need 1000ppi resolution. I currently use a 50" TV and my 34" widescreen at work annoys me a bit.

        • Just sit slightly further back

    • +4

      It's 0.4K, close enough.

  • +15

    HODL

  • +1

I actually love this stuff, but i have rainmeter on one of my many screens…

    • Thanks. Smaller than I thought

      • +27

        That's what she said

    • +2

More cpu usage than I'd like

      • +1

To be fair he's using a really low-power computer.

      • +1

More cliche anime babe the I'd like. This thing certainly has a target demographic.

  • +7

This looks to be cranking out bitmaps over serial, any idea what the max baud rate is? Seems to be using 16bit pixels so a full image is ~307kB, which would be a wee bit slow at normal serial speeds.

  • +1

I wish we can change the screen ourselves to display other REST API information…

    • +1

Check the GitHub link in the post. That may have what you’re after

      • The github link is a good start. worth it to get just to play with the github code i think. i doubt you're going to be able to use it as a proper monitor for something like a Pi any time soon, but using the code at github you could use it to display some status information i'm sure.

  • +11

lol I would like that to get this as a novelty, but just realized I got my Dell P2214H for the same price though :D

    Alternatively there's a project on Github(github.com)

Looks like it flashes an image and then feeding value data with an USB serial port :D

Alternatively, you can use a mobile phone with

    • +2

Added benefit the mobile phone will also run xcloud gaming :P

  • Anything that is a proper screen would be a bit more expensive:

    320x480 display

Looks like the fbcp-ili9341 SPI based displays you find in raspberry pis etc

    • +3

      fbcp-ili9341

back in the day I used Nokia 1100 displays for my projects, costed like $1, was cheaper than 16*2 displays with more pixels and control.
would love to try something like this but haven't built anything for years now.

Bundled crap software apparently does not read nvme

  • Would like to run that as a monitor for my security system albeit a tad small..

    • +2

      $189.99

      🤔

    • +3

Technically they are totally different products. The one in your link is a fully functional display monitor with a weird resolution whereas this gadget in the post is more like a USB device that has a display screen for itself.

  • +4

    Do i need this? NO
next min : Order successfully placed

Time to find excuses to resist another deal posted by clear.

    • Windows only
    • Only works with the included software

If this worked for R Pi 4, I would have caved in already.

  • are there any opensource apps to make it show and update stock/crypto prices? this would be coooool

    • +5

Guy has linked the github repo like 19 times.

      • +2

Guy has linked the github repo like 19 times.

Well, he really should have mentioned it in the deal post so people don't keep asking.
At least in the second paragraph.

    • Get a normal small HDMI screen, hook up to pi and write a program to pull prices every 5 sec or so and graph. Ezpz

  • +1

It looks cool but I'll just stick with a software solution (Speccy).
It would trigger my OCD and I would find myself constantly looking at the display and worrying about my temps and free resources, instead of enjoying the games!

  • If I could modify it to work on my Pi4 I'd get it.

  • +1

If you are okay with waiting for shipping, here's one for AU $22.73. https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005004681245759.html?spm=a2…

They're currently flooding aliexpress it seems

    • +2

A seller without a name and 0 feedback is risky.

      • +2

No, you're right. If anybody else is reading this, please search on AliExpress for the same thing, there's 10+ sellers selling the same thing and there's a few listings below $29

  • Can't wait for the flightsim community to build projects for this

  • +1

so I need to pay to be able to connect this thing to my PC so it can slow it down?

just what I asked Santa in 2004

  • +2

Bought 1. Now I need to build a new PC to use this.

  • This is decently priced.

When I built my custom looped water cooled pc, I bought a seperate LCD monitor and mounted it inside my case. Customised what I wanted to display and monitor.

  • not enough RGB

  • +2

The convenient part of this is you can use a header->usb for power+data when you mount it inside your PC.

If outside your PC, you could just use an old android phone with something like Remote System Monitor

I mean, you could probably use the android phone inside your PC with USB power as well (but still do the data over wifi)

    • +2

Wouldnt be putting a phone with a battery inside a pc case they gets really hot.

  • Does this act as a secondary display?
Used one of those raspberry pi screens for a while but always had issues with it acting as a secondary monitor.

    • No sorry they run off USB and need there software to control the device.

  • +9

These do not display anything really useful. There software is also a bit suss.
I got a few of these to put in builds a while back, but once I found out how limited they are and the software keeps flagging anti-virus. Glad I install them on a test bench first before trying in builds. I quickly returned them and the seller was a real pain to get the refund back from.

These are similar to ones out years ago call Goverlay. They where USB connected and had to use there software to configure but I dont think they have updated the software in while, so no good for CPUs and GPU made in the last year or two. But if you got a older system/hardware they will work well, Have used in the past.

You can get HDMI screens for a little more and run with Aida64 and you can make some really good screens and monitor everything including temps. Aida64 is also updated for new sensors/hardware all the time. You do have to buy the software too tho, so add that into the cost as well.

Another option is Corsair iCue Nexus. Runs off usb, monitors most hardware, runs on Corsair iCue (free software), Alot smaller tho too. Can mount internal or external, to run internal you will need a USB 2.0 Type A Female to Dupont 9 Pin Female Header adaptor, its touch screen as well.

    Hope this helps someone out.

    • Edit, GOverlay can work with Aida64 and HWInfo for sensor info, so factor into cost. So I would go with GOverlay before this, alot better. https://www.goverlay.com/

  • +3

I bought the same of AliExpress for $45, so this a great price. In terms of the product itself, it's a nice aesthetic to display temps, memory etc which I have mounted inside my case. My cable seems to disconnect a lot (not sure if it's just the cable I received). Software isn't too great but thanks to the post I found out about the Github project, definitely will be giving that a try to see how it goes. Cheers OP

Purchased at 10am and got an Auspost tracking number at 1pm

  • +1

I'd want to make use of screens from discarded phones, tablets and laptops rather than buy new.

  • -1

Exactly what I was looking for, grabbed 1 :)

  • +3

Pro tip for people just after a system stats display: If you have an old android tablet or phone laying around you can use the app "Remote System Monitor" by Trigone to cast stats over wifi from your PC.
I have an old Galaxy Tab A on my desk for this, plugged into power but not into the PC and it's worked great for the better part of a year so far

    • Logitech LGHub software can do this as well. But last time I tried it, it was not that great. There is also the issue of power off and on with PC for the tablet if mounted inside case.

  • Mine arrived yesterday - the default anime-girl display setup is cringe, but the quality is decent enough. The supplied cable is garbage though.

I've been writing my own script to scrape the Ozbargain RSS feed and display the deal with the highest upvotes. If anyone is interested, let me know, as I'll still need to finish it up and work out how to put it onto Github. Not sure if I'm meant to fork the existing one? Or is that only if its relevant to the original repo?
