Been tracking DDR5 prices in anticipation for the upcoming release of AMD Zen 4 on September 26th. Seems like a good price for a standard non RGB kit. Cheapest local stock I could find is $317 + shipping at Skycomp.

Price History at C CamelCamelCamel.

  • Add price to the title. ;)

  • Price in title please

  • has there been any release/benchmarks released from AMD on the "optimal" speed to pair with zen4?

    • not that I'm aware of. Though the next cheapest price for a 6000mhz kit is a good ~$85 more. dont think its worth it at that point

    • Leaks/rumors suggest optimal to be 6000

    • +1

Zen 4 Infinity Fabric runs at 3000Mhz, meaning the 6000Mhz DDR5 will be the most effective as it will run 1:1 and not asynchronous ;)

Similar to how Zen 3 likes 3600MHz RAM as that is 1:1 with it's default Infinity Fabric at 1800Mhz …

      • is C36 as bad as it sounds?
Or is CAS Latency totally different on DDR5 (compared to DDR4)

        • +1

That's normal for DD5, double the DDR4 CAS latency. Higher bandwidth on DDR5 so that evens things out.

        • +4

Yeah and nah :P Remember CAS is measured in cycles, so it depends on frequency :/

So if you measure the nanosecond time it takes to fetch data from RAM (and you assume EVERYTHING else is equal - which it will never be!!):
          DDR4 @ 3200 with CAS16 = DDR5 @ 6400 with CAS32!

          So, in theory, to be equivalent latency of DDR4 @ 3600 CL16 you will need DDR5 @ 7200 CL32
but keep in mind there are other technologies in the DDR5 spec to make up for latency like:
higher bandwidth, shorter fetch times, smarter prefetch, smaller and faster gates etc, etc

  • Gonna wait til there's more info on the new EXPO stuff

  • Good speed considering it's 1.25v ram, and decent timings. Most kits at 5600 are already at 1.30v or 1.35v, with similar or worse timings.

  • This or the Corsair Vengeance 6000Mhz for 405$?

  • This generation AMD build is going to be expensive. I'll be holding off for a year, maybe mid next year.
My 5800x is just fine till then.

    • yea same, I will keep my 3900 till the pricing and any potential issues settles

  • It is now discounted to 260$ on Amazon.

  • Looking for 6000MHz :(
