If you don't mind a day in Hanoi on the way back (land 6:30am leave 11:30pm) I would rather spend the difference on croissants and cheese. And a day in Hanoi could be fun provided there are no covid issues with leaving the airport anymore.

      • You can't do Hanoi - Melbourne/Sydney direct tho, can you? Don't you have to go through KLL?

        • +2

Yes you can - Vietnam Airlines fly between Hanoi and Sydney. Melbourne > Hanoi is via Ho Chi Minh City.

      • -1

Takes 3 hours each side just to get through immigration there.

        • +6

Rubbish, I fly to Vietnam regularly, never been more than half an hour at immigration in Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City or Da Nang.

          • +3

@Flying Ace: Don’t know why Fying Ace’s comment got negged. It never took me more than an hour at Immigration at Tan Son Nhat Airport (HCMC). Already had two trips during the last three months.

        • +1

I have flown in to HCMC a heap of times and never had to wait much at all in immigration.

      • +1

I would rather spend the difference on croissants and cheese

        Better go to Austria then.

      • But you need a visa, right ?

      • But organising a Vietnam visa just for one day would be annoying and costly too

    • +6

Nothing wrong with minimizing holiday expenses, especially with airfares which can be insanely expensive.

      • Indeed Bali at Xmas time at the moment for example has astonishingly high airfares.

        • I know a few people flying back home in Xmas and they paid eye-wateringly exorbitant airfares. It's a stark contrast to the airfares deals posted here (to be fair, those won't include the year end holidays).

  • +7

It's cheap but …. massive layovers and booking through dodgy third party sites.

    • -2

      5hrs is not massive
Gotogate, MyTrip, Flightnetwork are not dodgy by any means.

      • +3

They all are dodgy with consistent 1 star reviews

        • +3

I've personally booked with them several times without any issues.

          • +6

@expatOz: I used some of those sites, too. And I think they can be good, due to potential cost saving - UNTIL you do have any issues or require some sort of support, changes etc.

          • @expatOz: Because you've been lucky doesn't mean they're good. I've had very bad experiences - One instances is where the booking didn't show up in the airline's system, trying to work through the o/seas helpdesk and personnel with only a very rudimentary grasp of English was a nightmare.

            • @LoungeLizard: Well then, QANTAS has to be the dodgiest of them all by that standard.
I had to spend hours on the call for a so single one way ticket!

      • Don't know about the others but Gotogate is dodgy af

    • I have 6 hrs with Singapore, and return 22 hours.

That's because I used points for business.

It's shit, probably heaps of empty seats on earlier flights but that's how it is.

      • I’ve got similar with scoot to Athens in late February; not sure how to fill the early hours of the morning on arrival in Singapore. Maybe 5 hours at Aerotel, then out for the day.

Singapore still has annoying covid entry thing at the moment; hopefully gone by then.

Recently booked flights with Vietnam Airlines similar to this deal and the price of the flights on the airlines page was much cheaper than through any third part page, which showed much higher prices. YMMV.

  • Safe?

  • +18

Cheaper to book directly with the airline, eg Melb-CDG 29 Apr to 14 May is $1062 on th Vietnam Airlines website rather than $1092+ with the dodgy online agencies. Plus you will get far better customer service direct from the airline rather than these dodghy online agencies. IWantThatFlight doesnt get commission direct from airlines I guess hence why it only compares the dodgy agencies.

    • +3

Agreed on all counts, but does it deserve a neg? The deal's more about the price, it's not forcing anyone to book through the dodgy third parties.

      • +11

Yes because they dont include the cheapest and best option, so its not a deal.

        • +9

I usually take these flight deals as a general sign that the dates and airline are cheap, rather than focusing on the exact booking agent or link in the deal, but I see your point.

          • +1

@Ozymandias: i think booking through a reputable site/agent is the key, so in case you need customer services you're getting some quality responses there.

Never been on a Vietnam Airline flight before so i cant comment on the quality.

    • Also, if you book through a Vietnamese travel agency, you can customise the dates of all legs without incurring extra fees.
I always use Vietnam Airlines when I want to travel to a country AND Vietnam.
It is worth noting that booking through an agency might cost approx. $50 buck more than if you book directly on the Vietnam Airlines website. However, you have the benefit of customising the legs.

Btw, saying “Vietnamese travel agency”: I don’t know if it is a good term to use. I found that only travel agencies who have Vietnamese background could do so. Don’t know why the other agencies could not do it. Maybe some Ozbargainers might shed some light.

      • Any recommendation of a travel agency that can do that? Might be worth me doing in the future.

I have been using this one for several years. (I believe there are a dozen of others).

I flew Vietnam Airlines to Vietnam before covid and it was a great full service airline. That said, they didn't do online check in and I was pretty shocked when I arrived at Melb Airport to find a massive queue for check in. It took about almost 2 hours to get checked in because the vast majority of passengers were Vietnamese travelling either home or to visit family. Every single one had boxes and large excess baggage of supplies to have weighed, wrapped, scanned etc… and it took forever. Not a deal breaker by any means, but an FYI if you've never flown with them before.

    • I could second this.
The trick is to come either really early (3 hours plus before flight time) if you want to do GST claim or travel with family; otherwise if you are not picky with your seat, then come a bit later (from 60 to 90 mins before flight time depends on how adventurous you are.)

  • +1

will never fly Vietnam airlines or use flightnetwork ever again. worst travel experience ever- cost me $8000 extra and took 48 hours to get home. happened in July 2022. they're scammers- sell you tickets that are actually unusable

  • +2

Google Flights has links to the airlines themselves (in addition to third party sites like Gotogate, Booking.com etc).

As much as I hate to promote a Google monopoly on anything search related, another advantage is that the results are more reliable. For whatever reason, IWTF could have a Gotogate deal for $2500 when Google has a Gotogate deal for the same flight at $997. The worst part is that Gotogate will happily charge you $2500 even though they'll have the exact same flight for $1000 listed as the cheapest option on the same page.

If you happen to catch this comment right now, check the first Sydney to Paris link above.

  • As mentioned earlier view these posts as adverts and book direct with the airline itself is usual best practice.
