  • I need a lawn mower ( my petrol Victa is on its last leg) due to spring and summer is coming but still deciding whether to get a petrol or battery lawn mower. This deal looks good for a quality battery lawn mower but I'm just afraid it might not have the power to cut tall grass like the petrol mower does. Does anyone own one of this and can comment on the the ability to cut tall grass with a medium size backyard?

If you are struggling already with a petrol, the electric mower is significantly weaker. Petrol mowers have more torque to cut through dense grass than electric mowers. For a small lawn I would consider electric mowers, anything bigger I would be leaning to getting a petrol again. Victa is not bad, I have a Victa myself. I also have makita tools and battery, but prefer the petrol mowers for more torque. Victa requires some maintenance with oil changes and high cost of petrol, if these are concerns go with the electric, but also consider long term battery degradation too, good luck.

Thanks for the informative reply. I think I might get a petrol one and go for the Masport 470 which I heard great review about. Beside 330mm is quite small.

        • Just looked on totaltools website to compare and wow Makita do a lot of lawnmower models! I'd definitely check them out before going all in on a petrol one 🙂

I have a masport with a Briggs and Stratton engine. Cuts buffalo on unless it's long then can struggle. I think an electric would struggle more and i have a pretty big yard?

      • I just read a review on 399$, ozito mover. The guy who fixes and uses petrol movers sells all the petrol ones And buys ozito ones after testing it.

    • Would recommend at least the 36v version then that uses 2 batteries. I find it strong enough unless the grass is really thick and then you may have to do 2 passes.

    • This model is too narrow and all plastic and at 18V won't be very strong to cut tall grass and 30lr grass catcher is very small. If I to buy a new mower to replace my current Victa petrol (still going), I would consider cordless either Makita 36V at $660 with steel chassis (I am in Makita system) or Ego for $799 inc bonus blower vac (if you can find stock near you), Bunning have Ryobi 36V 46cm 4.0Ah Brushless Cordless Lawn Mower Kit for $499 which seems to be reasonable considering the price.

Why don't you get your petrol mower fixed or at least a quote , probably end up cheaper!

  • Interesting how with cars everyone talks about how much more torque an electric one has than a petrol car, but when its a lawn mower its the electric one that lacks torque.

(Yes, I have a electric lawn mower but its one that has a power cord. And even it lacks the guts to do a tough job.)

  • You need a 36v model if you have medium or large lawn. I have a 36v Makita myseft, cut very well, quiet and no effort needed to start, just push the button and hold the lever. 18v maybe is for 5m2 lawn and you cut it every two weeks.

    • I take it 36v just means two batteries inserted?

      • Yes two 18v batteries together but a bigger, more powerful machine with steel deck and about double the price. 18v version can only use one 18v battery. The same batteries are used for my sweeper and blower and we can buy more skin only tools, they are powered by the same batteries.

    • Would it cut buffalo?

      • How tall is the Buffalo and how much you want to cut it to?

      • Yes it can, if cut every 3-4 weeks ony one cut, if 6-8 weeks maybe need two cuts in some area where grass are taller. It does not do so well with wet grass and i'd say it's about 80% as powerful as my petrol one.

  • I had the 2 battery version of this and it lasted a little under 3 years. I got the model up with the metal body (also 2 battery) and it's been much better. It was double the cost of this but worth it for me. We have easily less than 200 sq.m of grass.

  • I've got like 8x4m of grass and think this mower will do… Still tossing up. Chances are I'll end up getting this but by the time I do it'll probably be back to normal price
