Banger price for sanwa parts - it says switch compatible but looks like it’s wired usb? How’s it going to connect?

EDIT looks like you need a usb to usb c adapter

    • +4

The Switch dock has 2 USB ports, how else?

      • +5

tbh i totally forgot the dock even has usb, it's been that long since i used the dock.

I usually charge it using a wall charger and just play handheld

    • Yeah, this is an incredible price for a stick with Sanwa parts. Tempted to buy one myself, but I already have enough fight sticks.

    • I bought a F300 elite earlier this year for a discounted price of $180 (in april).

I got it for my a500 mini.

This post makes me sad as 1) Gipped and 2) It doesnt work with the mini (Not the sticks fault).

  • joystick not included? i like the color for F300 and 101

  • +3

+1 for sanwa buttons for the real arcade tactile arcade experience

    • +2

Even though Aussie arcades used MCA sticks and buttons :)

So the true Aussie experience would be MCA.

  • +1

The buttons do not use micro switches like the vast majority of 1980's and 1990's arcade buttons did. There were a few that did not use micro switches, but the Hankin and LAI all used micro switches that I worked on.

No mention of the USB PCB used. The USB IC is the biggest cause of compatibility and reliability issues.

  • +5

Maybe worth noting that PS5 compatibility requires some extra work after a little bit of research.

Playing PS5 games requires either an adaptor or a compatible third-party controller plugged into the stick.

Playing PS4 games on the PS5 requires a PS4 controller plugged into the stick.

  • Also worth noting that the standard (non-elite) F300 and F101 linked above dont have the stick and buttons included, only the base.

Just in case any of you were falling over yourselves to order a ready to go arcade stick for 70 bucks without reading the description like I almost did!

    • +3

I read it as it's complete but with generic? buttons and stick.. But you can replace the components with Sanwa Denshi internals, if you wish but are not included.

      • +5

F300 and F101 come with the stick and buttons but not Sanwa

      • how's different sanwa and generic

    • I stand corrected!

  • I while ago I bought one of those pandoras box machines to play old fighting games and it was hot garbage.

I have always thought I should make my own with two of these fightsticks as the base as you'd at least have nice controls.

    • Have a look at MiSTer FPGA. Emulation never quite got there for me in the past but MiSTer is amazing. It is a bit pricey to set one up though.

  • With controller paring, has anyone tried a third-party wired Xbox 360 controller? I've got a Rock Candy brand and I'm scared to look up prices for an official wired controller.

  • +1

The elite with Sanwa parts is ok, but I wouldn't be bothering with the cheaper ones with generic alternatives.
The case itself is a bit of an awkward size and I don't find it comfortable to use for anything over 30 minutes.

If you really want an arcade stick, I'd be recommending to save up a little more and buy something in a larger case that will be much more comfortable to use.

    • Any recommendations? I have a Hori SERIES X Fighting Stick alpha pairing with Xbox Series X but it doesn't work with some games.

      • +1

Hard to say right now, its slim pickings for sticks on new gen consoles at the moment.
I only know of a couple of sticks that have been released so far and they're all quite expensive, such as Victrix Pro FS being like US$400.

I'd be holding off until more options become available or just replacing the PCB in your current stick with the Brook UFB PCB(+UP5 if you want PS5 support).

Hard to beat the Mayflash sticks for budget, but they leave a lot to be desired and has many strings attached especially if you're using the stick for fighting games imo.

        • Thank you :)

    • +1

Any thoughts on the F500 or F500 Elite? F500 Elite hasn't been sold by Amazon AU for a while. 3rd party option is $390. F500 is $127.

I put on a camel alert for the F500 Elite.

      • +2

The size and width of the f500 definitely looks like it'd be nicer and more comfortable to use than the sticks in the OP deal. You could put sanwa or semitsu parts in it for around 60 to 80 bucks I think and it seems like it'd be a nice stick to me.

      • +3

Personally, I wouldn't be going anything Mayflash.
They're annoying to use since you need to do a pass-through to a console controller for authentication.
The size is also just too small to be comfortable imo.

I've had a couple of Madcatz SE sticks and once I moved to the Madcatz TE/TE2 housing, I never looked at the smaller/compact layouts as they just weren't comfortable to play on vs something a little larger.
Best stick on the market for the past few years based on shape/layout is the Qanba Obsidian(with Madcatz TE2 and Razer Panthera close behind but both now unavailable), but they're so hard to get in Australia now that it just isn't worth it. Qanba also haven't released any new gen stick yet.

It also really depends on how much you're willing to spend and what your intended use is.
My use case is exclusively fighting games, including traveling to events with the stick. So I've leaned more towards custom sticks recently since mainstream manufacturers just aren't releasing much at the moment and the best stick for new gen consoles is the Victrix Pro FS, but its US$400 which is just too much for majority of people, including me.

        • +2

The passthru thing would be a massive pain in the arse.

        • +1

What do you mean by "pass-through to a console controller for authentication" ?
Just plug your controller into MAYFLASH once? Or every time?

          • @congo: Every time when you use it.

          • @congo: They don't have an "approved" PCB so it requires you to use a console controller to do the authentication on console, so its required every time you want to use the stick.
On the F300 Elite, you'll see near the cable coming out of the back side there is a USB port, you need to connect a console controller to this port, have the controller powered on (and I think possibly use the controller for console menus?).

        • The stuff you're talking about is like a different realm of price. I think the Mayflash is fine for casual play or someone who wants to try out stick. Then if you like it, you have the option to mod it (and obviously you can always buy an expensive new stick if you're really into it). I've no personal experience but I've seen compliments given to the chassis of the Mayflash F500 for those willing to mod. Last time I checked the F500 Elite wasn't worth the price unless you don't want to do any DIY - buying the regular F500 and your choice of stick and buttons to swap in was cheaper.

Also it's worth having a look at second hand stuff, not a whole lot of Aussies selling them but you can get lucky, especially if you're fine with an older stick that needs modding or an adapter for compatibility with newer consoles.

We have a few local sources of stick parts, see here.

          • +1

@Diji: Thats fair, but I made it clear my perspective was of someone who plays fighting games exclusively with my sticks. I have used similar sized sticks to the Mayflash for many years and recommend against it for most people.
Unfortunately at the moment there really isn't anything cheap on the market that is worth buying and as I said, I don't think the Mayflash is worth the money.
If you are going to harvest it for the Sanwa parts, just buy the parts for less.
If you are going to harvest if for the case, just buy a much better case for similar money.
If you are going to use it as is, you'll be left wanting. Either because you go for the budget option and the button and joystick feel like shit or because you went for the elite and the housing is cramped and uncomfortable to use for extended play or because the way you need to stuff around with needing a controller for console play is annoying to use.

I do agree with your point, that 2nd hand is something to consider and I'll add that at sub $200 budget, 2nd hand is the best option you have.

Good link for parts there as well. I can personally vouch for pugilist tech and CQB for parts locally and Waifusticks for custom made housing.

            • @Sythe: Not worth the money? It's 72 bucks for a fight stick that works on every platform. It's cheaper than most first party controllers. I will be buying it almost exclusively for fighting games, but I will use it for other stuff too.

              • @Jackson: Yes, I don't believe its worth the money.
I've been active in the FGC for a good while now and I've seen very few people stay using a stick like this.
What usually happens is they buy this because it is cheap, they use it for a few weeks and due to the size, find it uncomfortable to use and it either goes into the cupboard and never gets used again and they go back to pad, or they feel like they need to buy a larger more comfortable stick if they want to keep using one and then their Mayflash is gathering dust after a very short amount of time.
Buying a better product second hand is a much better idea than buying something like this in my opinion.

I went the smaller budget stick route when I first got into fighting games. First with some crap that came with a blaz blue game that was similar shape to the F300 and then with the Madcatz SE which is similar to the F500.
I even went the modding route on the SE as the stock parts sucked. By the time it was a decent stick, I'd spent nearly $200 already and as soon as I got my hands on something more comfortable to use I never looked back and my SE stick just gathered dust.
If I'd just paid around $200 on a Madcatz TE at the time, I would have ended up saving money.

                • @Sythe: Yes, I think you said it when you said "I am in the FGC community" . I don't think I will ever be in that community, I am looking for a stick that I can get a bit more of an authentic SF experience with and then for it to double as a retro arcade stick. This is probably a 10 times bigger group than those in the FGC community.

                  • @Jackson: Then buy one and move on.
Your opinion for your use case doesn't mean that my opinion is wrong.
I've given my perspective and even made note of where my perspective is coming from.
I have used every mainstream stick on the market for 4th gen consoles and also made multiple custom sticks. So I think I can say my opinion with some authority on the topic.

                    • +1

@Sythe: Ahh, that's not how forums work mate, we don't move on, we stay and flesh things out and people consider both opinions and make their own decision.yours is completely valid for your use case, and mine also. It's just that the sub group of the population in your situation is tiny, while mine is practically everyone else (the mass casual gamers).

For the record I appreciated hearing from you, but its helpful for people to hear multiple sides

            • +1

@Sythe: I didn't mean to sound argumentative, just offering an alternative opinion for anyone reading who just wants to dip their toes in.

Like when I was looking at getting a Logitech wheel I'd see a lot of people deep in the hobby recommend against it because "it's only a few hundred more to get something better and you will then have to spend more to upgrade", but in the end the entry level thing was the right choice for me because I only use it very occasionally and I didn't get super absorbed in the hobby.

Secondhand is definitely the way to go though because you can probably just sell it for the same price or more if it's not your thing. Just depends on if there's anyone nearby selling (or you're willing to gamble buying secondhand online).

            • @Sythe: Do you have any recommendations for a reasonably priced good case? I wouldn't mind building something with a wireless board.

              • +1

@Fappo: Really depends what you're looking for in a case.
If you're ok with Acrylic, there is a guy based in Perth doing custom cases as a hobby. Really happy with mine. https://twitter.com/WaifuSticks
If you want a metal case, you'd have to look overseas. I got one from Allfightsticks a few years ago and its really good but pricy. https://allfightsticks.com/
If you want wood, there were a couple of options locally last I looked but I haven't looked for a few years so unsure who is still around.

I'd recommend checking out Brooks PCBs for the board. They've got a wireless option.

Parts, as I mentioned in another comment there are a few guys selling parts locally now.
                Namely CQB and Pugilist Tech.

                • @Sythe: Thanks for that, I'll check those out. 👍

      • F500 is $94.5 for the next 12hrs, bargain

  • +1

Thanks OP, bargain for a stick that works on everything with Sanwa parts!

  • +2

Would the F500 is $127 be better than the F300 Elite?

    • While it does not have Sanwa parts, many reviews say that the stick and buttons are still very decent and usable, plus you can easily put the sanwa stick and buttons in for about $80 at any point in the future, would likely take you 30-60 minutes even if you have never done it before and many tutorials online etc.

What you get with the F500 (non elite) is a much larger base that most I think would find more comfortable to use and maybe you would regret the 300 even if its the elite version. This is the best route to go I believe because what they are asking for the Elite 500 is an insult when you can just put the sanwa parts into the F500 yourself and end up with exactly the same stick, some might say even better, if you prefer the all black look rather than the beige of the elite, weird colour choice if you ask me.

Elite 500 makes no sense unless you would like to throw about $200 dollars down a toilet.

      • Yeah, that Elite price is from a 3rd party. When Amazon last sold it they sold it for $218, with an all time low of $190. I don't like the chances of me actually using the stick for the foreseeable future so I just got put in an alert for when Amazon sells it again.

        • Was not aware of this, thankyou. $190 or even $218 is definitely worth it for the Elite 500, but that 3rd party seller must be drunk, I hope no one is actually buying it for that price.

    • F500 housing would be nicer, but I still don't think its large enough to be comfortable.
If you then decided to replace the buttons and joystick with Sanwa or similar quality parts, you're looking at $200+ for the original stick + replacement parts.
At that point, you could just look at alternatives and get something that is overall better.
Also consider checking out the second hand market.
You could get something like Razer Panthera, Madcatz TE2, Qanba Obsidian for around $200something. These would all be way better sticks than the Mayflash.

Depends on your use case though.

  • +1

Elite now sold out, glad I got one in time even though I don't need it.. Ozbargain effect.

  • +3

Thanks got a F300, been looking for a joystick for emulators for a while, the joypads ain't cutting it for many games.

  • +2

    Awesome thanks!

I've had Sanwa sticks and buttons sitting in a storage tub for about 6 years as I've never had the time to build a control panel/deck myself.

I've just ordered two of the 101s to gut and put the sanwa parts in! sweet!!

  • Where do you guys get Arcade button kits? I know there's google, but I'd like to hear an Ozbargainer's view on this.

    • +2

We have a handful of places to grab stuff. This list has links.

    • +1

      Depends what you are after.
Locally there is Pugilist Tech and CQB are relatively new players in the market locally but are both great to deal with.
      Internationally my picks are:
ArcadeworldUK generally has a better range if you're looking for something particular and you can ship via royal mail which is quite cheap for international shipping.
Focus Attack has the best range of parts, but their shipping cost is like $40-50+ as they only use UPS or FedEx, so it usually ends up being not worth it unless you are buying a lot.

  • I bought the qanba crystal during prime day and have been using it on my ps5. Works really well.
If people want something cheaper for ps5 that stick is really good

  • +2

Got mine today and the difference between a 15 yr old Hori Fighting Stick 3 and the F300 Elite is night and day. The movement of buttons is just so smooth yet precise. Fantastic upgrade and has given life to old some old games.
