    Can deliver ultra-fast 100+ FPS

    So can my i5-2500k

    • +1

But could it play Crysis at ultra LOL so long ago now

      • -3

        Yes

        • My i5 4670 with rx 480 could nt do more than meduim went better when I added 2nd rx 480 though

          • +1

@ShannonN: Not saying it played it well, but it played it :)

    • +5

Can run MS Paint 100+ fps

    • +1

NOT really… an old CPU will be like more then 50% less FPS dependent on resolution and GPU used

    • +2

      So can my Pentium 4.

Moving those cards in solitaire… oof… so smooth.

    • +1

I know this was in jest but Im actually still rocking one of these! Its been a solid decade!

      • +2

Yeah, evidently my comment was a woosh for most ozb's!

Nothing about my comment was incorrect.

Maybe I'm running cs:go at 320*200 on lowest settings :p

People assume my comment was stating that an i5-2500k can keep up with a much newer CPU.

The (main) point was simply to highlight how ridiculous the marketing rhetoric is.

  • +1

Is the 5800x worth the extra $30?

    • +4

5800x is only slightly faster, but uses more power than the 5700x. For $30, I would say it wouldn't be worth it, but if you really want 10% more performance, then go for it

      • +3

        5800x has 10% better performance?!

        • +5

Yeah but only in things that max all cores like CPU rendering
          https://youtu.be/Kr5V1lgctYw?t=360
It's because of the lower power limit, which if you navigate to that section of the video you'll see it's consuming about half as much power to perform 90% as good.

    • +7

5800x is a watt wasting oven, 5700x is what the 5800x shouldve been

    • NO

    • No

      it's also MUCH MUCH hotter

      like 10c or more

The MT score is less tha n3 percent diffrence

    • If you are doing really cpu intensive tasks may be worth it at a higher tdp and a capable motherboard. Else I wouldn’t bother.

      • +1

        Just 1440p gaming and spreadsheets.

        • +1

          "It's tax time, biatch!"

Chalk up another vote for the 5700X over the 5800X thermal oven…

        • I personally would not go beyond 5600x for gaming.

  • This or wait for the 4700x?

    • +7

      Do you mean 7700x?

    • +1

assuming you are referring to the 7700x, you do realise that also requires buying a new motherboard and possibly new ram at the same time, even if 7700x was cheaper than this you'd still be spending a hell of a lot more

    • Depends on a lot of factors.

      • What you currently have
      • When you need it
      • How often you upgrade
      • Workload
      • Budget
      • Your ability(or inability) to jump to an alternate dimension

For example at this point, if I didn't have an urgent need, I'd postpone until 7000 series launch and possibly Intel's next launch.

      • +1

I have only a case and psu at the moment.

        • +1

You'll need motherboard and ram as well.

If you've already got a capable mobo, this unit would serve you well. What CPU = mobo are you currently running?

If you don't have an AM4 motherboard, definitely wait for the 7700x…

          • +1

@UncleRico: No cpu or mobo. Just on a laptop. I feel like the build for the 5700x will be much cheaper than the 7700x build. Dont see any deals on 6700xts at the moment.

            • +1

@smerm07: You already have a compatible laptop, or you're looking to build one around a new CPU?

CPU upgrades are a very different beast for laptops than desktops…

              • +1

@UncleRico: Need a whole new desktop to replace the old laptop. Ive got a fractal design 7 compact case and the thermaltake 650w gf1 psu

          • @UncleRico: 7700X means DDR5, which still costs at least 50% more. And the motherboards sound like they're going to be pricier. Not to mention the CPU itself is going to cost more than this.

Unless you mean wait for the AM5 release and see if AM4 stuff drops even more.

            • +1

              @Diji: Sure does.

And agree that it's much easier to justify sticking with the AM4 platform if you at least have some components to repurpose.

But if someone didn't already have an AM4 mobo or DD4 RAM, it's arguably a false economy to build a new system around a platform that has already reached end of life. AMD have a great track record for supporting platforms across generational change, so any new platform would likely have capacity to support CPUs beyond AM5, giving them great return on investment over a longer period.

But yes, you will pay bleeding edge prices for compatible components for the next few months…

              • @UncleRico: I have little doubt AM5 will be well supported but I'm not sure I'd agree that building an AM4 system now is a bad choice. Depending on the workload, it should be fine for years to come and the bang for buck will probably be unmatched by AM5 for quite some time. Now, if smerm is asking "is it worth it to wait for a 7700X system to be reasonably priced" (implying they're willing to wait a fair while) I would 100% say to go with the newer system and reap the expected benefits of the extended platform support. But if we're talking about paying launch prices versus deals like this, I'm not sure it's worth it compared to grabbing something around this price. My vote would be to wait for new stuff to launch and see what the real cost difference is.

    • 7700x sorry

  • +1

So tempting yet pretty sure I have zero need for this both because I have 2k and 4K screen so mostly gpu bound on games I play but also doesn’t matter how many frames I get I still suck at gaming 😂

  • +4

The 5700x is basically a power limited 5800x and with little effort you can achieve on par/better results with pbo, ppt and curve optimizer all done on a cheap air cooler.

    See my comments here:

    cpu z. 660 SC 6775 MC.

    https://ibb.co/vXzytfd
    https://valid.x86.fr/bench/1

  • What is a good aftermarket air cooler for this?

      • +2

Great job summarising three of the best value performers in the aircooled CPU space. Three great recommendations, albeit the Deepcool Gammaxx GTE V2 may be even better value since it is essentially an enhanced version of the listed $40 GT for only $34.

        http://www.amazon.com.au/DEEP-COOL-GAMMAXX-Heatpipes-Compati…

About the only cooler missing from consideration would be the Dark Rock 4 Pro, but at $150, it would be overkill for a 5700x and your latter two examples would be perfect for a performance rig based on this super-efficient CPU.

      • Vetroo 5 on sale, white $39. Any good?

        • +1

No. Reasonable performance for a budget cooler, but lots of reported variability in quality of finished product, with plenty of online reviews citing noisy fans which got noisier with time, and cooling which was slightly inferior to Gammaxx range or the Hyper 212 range on which both were based on / inspired by.

The Deepcool Gammaxx range are universally reviewed better, and at present are cheaper as well.

          • +1

@UncleRico: cheers. or i just pay the extra 50ish for the deepcool assassin 3? probably safer for summer temps. case cpu cooler height max is 169mm. cooler height is 165mm, 32mm ram support. id use corsair lpx ram which is 35mm. should fit.

              • +1

@UncleRico: cheers, appreciate all the assistance. height clearance shouldn't be an issue i don't think. it will be close though to the case cover.

                • +1

@smerm07: No prob (sorry - was mid-edit to adding the below commentary - bit you beat me to it!). All would serve you well, with your budget being the best arbiter. I love the DR4, but the GTE V2 is incredible value for money at a third the cost.

Both the Assassin III and Dark Rock 4 are 140mm based high performance coolers which require more clearance and are more than twice the weight and size of the 120mm based Vetroo, Gammaxx or Hyper ranges.

Make sure you double check the clearance in terms of height and RAM is you are considering one of the big boys - at 35mm, you'll likely have to shift the fan up 3mm to fit it in, which will approach your case ceiling leaving you with 1mm to spare, albeit with slightly reduced thermals due to off-centre fan. It may not be an issue if you have 4 RAM slots and don't use the nearest.

As you can (kind of) see from my shots below, there's a big difference. For the record - the $19 Cooler Master H411R (92mm fans - same basic specs as H410R and H412R) is now cooling a 3400G and is cooler and quieter than the Wraith Spire it came with. The 3400G had a 65w TDP just like the 5700X. For comparison sake, I've also included a photo of a spare Wraith Stealth, which is very similar, albeit has 20mm more height than the Spire.

                  • +1

@UncleRico: budget for the cooler isn't an issue between $90 and $35. But yeah id probably keep the 5700x at stock speeds and do a slight undervolt.

this is the ram id get with the 5700x:
                    https://www.amazon.com.au/Corsair-Vengeance-PC4-25600-Deskto…

                    • @smerm07: Should work fine for clearance with only a tiny adjustment required at most.

As I'm sure you already know, definitely get 3600Mhz RAM for the marginal price difference - it's the one thing I got wrong on my current rig. Will sync your internal bus speeds better and improve performance. Google "infinity fabric + 3600 RAM" for more.

                      • @UncleRico: i could run the 3200 with xmp enabled to get to 3600?

the 3600 ram is CL18 not CL16 on the 3200 ram

                        • +1

                          @smerm07: Not quite.

3600 @ 18 >>>> 3200 @ 16 on AM4 platform due to better sync'ing of internal buses. Lots of youtube videos about it.

    • +1

I was just about to post the same Deepcool Gammaxx GT as AO, before realising they've removed the 15% off voucher.

If you don't mind white, the Gammaxx GTE V2 can has 10% more fan speed and airflow on what is essentially the same heatsink, and is only $34 delivered. www.amazon.com.au/DEEP-COOL-GAMMAXX-Heatpipes-Compatible/dp/…

I've got one of these GTE's (on a 5600g) and the 2nd cooler AO linked, the Dark Rock 4, on a 3500x that I'm going to migrate to a 5700x whenever the will overpowers me.

The Dark Rock 4 is a 1kg silent beast that cools like no other aircooler I've ever had. It's 140mm fan does foul a ram slot though, unless I want to offset the fan. I debated between it and the Assassin III, but found the review consensus was near identical cooling and temps with slightly less mass/size and lower max volume for the DR4. At comparable pricing, the choice between the DR4 and A3 will likely come down to space and aesthetic preferences, since performance is near identical in terms of noise and thermals.

The considerably cheaper Gammaxx GTE V2 is silent almost always and should be more than enough for a 65w CPU like the 5700x without ever needing to ramp the fan close to max or thermal throttle. It's slightly smaller and lighter due in part to the 120mm fan, but for $34, is amazing value for money and ample for most CPU's and usages.

Now to decide whether the upgrade from my 3500x to a 5700x is right at this price…

  • Anyone got any experience running this stock with a Wraith Prism cooler? This cpu will probably be my next upgrade but don't really wanna shell out for a new cooler.

    • +3

I've seen reviews saying that under load, even some of the 65w AMD CPU's get thermal throttled and cause the Prism to ramp up to it's loud max speed settings.

For $34 dollars, the Gammaxx GTE V2 would be cooler and considerably quieter. Whether or not you'll get any benchmark improvements will likely be dependent on how hard you push your CPU, and what kind of case/cooling you have. But for less than 10% of the cost of the CPU itself, it's an easy upgrade to ensure you get the most out of it.

Appreciate the reply and thoughts mate.

        • +3

No sweat - happy to share what little I've learned after a month of going through the same research and decision-making.

  • X670 mobos ate going to be expensive. DDR5 ram not cheap either as 6000 is sweet spot this gen. Hold off to mid next year if you can for next upgrade.

    • That’s my plan, additionally 3d cache chips are coming in 2023, arguably the better gaming upgrade.

    • Hold off to mid next year if you can for next upgrade

Do you mean for am5 upgrade or max out the current am4 system

      • HODL, for am5 second gen mid next year.

  • Tempted to sell the 3700x for $200 but don’t really need the extra grunt. Happy to wait for AM5 Gen2

  • +2

Ha, I was waiting for the 5700X to come on sale, but ended up puling the trigger on the 5800X when it came down to $397 on Friday. Either way, I'm happy with the price, and it will be MUCH faster than my aging Ryzen 1800X.

  • +2
    • Let's hope the price slide continues with AM5 on the horizon…

  • +1

Very little need to spend more than $229 (hmm, $239 at amazon.com.au now) for a Ryzen 5 5600 if your primary PC activity is gaming (as the text in this deal suggests).

Probably 99%+ would be completely satisfied at this level of CPU. Very few have more demanding needs. Far better to put the change towards the video card.

  • +1

Pulled the trigger on this one, as I just received a $70 amazon giftcard from a userinterviews thing I did. This means I get to swap the 3600 into the cheap b550 board I got recently for my son's pc rebuild. Woo, father-son bonding time.

Delivery is Sep 27 to Oct 2, will see how it goes.

    • Nice work - on both the upgrade and bonding victories.

When I pull the trigger (still think AM4 prices have a fair way to fall over the next month or so) I'll be going from a 3500x to 5700x, so am interested to hear how much of an upgrade you note. Hope your father son bonding experience is more productive than mine - the new CPU, M.2 drive and general improved snappiness and FPS enhancements from little miss's refurbed PC, were quickly undermined by the query, "How can you do an upgrade but still not have any RGB in it?"

      • General idea is just to swap out the CPU/MB/Cooler and reattach everything, maybe later on throw in an NVMe drive, much later still replace the RX 580.

        • Woo, $5 cashrewards cashback too, I'm rich.

        • Good plan.

Sounds like years of COVID- and mining-inflated GPU prices are starting to finally re-adjust.

          After a month of shuffling parts, I now have the following, virtually all of which were obtained as components from OzBargain sales and one very cheap Techfast budget gaming PC;

          R5 3500X & GTX 1660, Gigabyte Aorus X570 Elite, 2tb Samsung 980 Pro, 32gb 3200Mhz, 750w Seasonic & Dark Rock 4 Cooler
          R5 5600G, MSI B550M-PRO-VDH-WIFI, 1tb Samsung 980 Pro, 16gb 3200 Mhz, Corsair CX650m & Gammaxx GTE V2 Cooler
          R5 3400G, Biostar B45M2, 500gb MX500,16gb 2667Mhz RAM, Corsair CX550m & Coolermaster H411R Cooler

Should buy me another 4-5 years of browsing, productivity and Football Managering especially when I upgrade the R5 3500X to an R7 5700X, and give the kids enough grunt to variously shoot or edumicate everything/one they encounter online for a few years…

    • Still no movement on delivery, poop
