Any highly regarded motherboard recommendations for this? I currently run a Ryzen 1700 with Asus PRIME X370-PRO ATX AM4 motherboard.

    • +14

If you are to upgrade both your mother board and CPU, I would recommend you to get 7600X. They are releasing it in another 3-4 weeks.

      • +4

It except they will need to upgrade their RAM as well as the new CPU's require DDR5 - which is pricey.

        • +2

Yeah this is why I'm considering the 5800x, don't want to spend more money than I have to.

          • +4

@Jebus: I should simply bios update And drop in the new chip and see how it goes

          • @Jebus: iirc, you can use the 5600x which comes with a stock cooler, and you wouldn't need to worry about cooling as well.

otherwise you might need to look at your current cooling if it's a closed loop and it's been a few years..etc

    • +7

It looks like your motherboard has support for 5000 series CPUs: https://www.asus.com/us/motherboards-components/motherboards…

Just need to upgrade the BIOS.

      • +1

Whaa! I assumed it may have supported the 3000 series, but had no idea it would support the 5000 series. Do you know if it would actually work well on such an old board? Didn't they add fans to motherboards at one point to keep them cool with newer processors?

        • +4

I had the same board and CPU . Updated the bios and dropped in a 5600x . No issues .

        • Fans to motherboards? No, but you will probably need a new CPU cooler. Dont need anything crazy

          • @BrokeCamel: Currently running a Noctua NH-U12S SE-AM4. Hoping that would handle it?

            • @Jebus: Oh yeah that would completely handle it. Your 1700 must have had fridge temps

        • You won't have the PCI-E lanes to the card slots (i.e. the GPU) running at PCIE 4.0 speeds, possibly to the M.2 NVMe slot as well. The former is what originally required active cooling.

          • +1

@jasswolf: I'm assuming that means I won't be worse off than I currently am, but I won't get to take advantage of some 5000 series benefits?

            • +1

@Jebus: Pretty much. x570 boards (which required the mini fan on the chipset) was pcie gen 4 which had no tangible difference for gpu/ssd speeds. Other differences would also be having more m.2 slots on the board. Next gen gpus might start being bottlenecked more by pcie gen 3 speeds but you'll have to wait for reviews and see.

In the end your cpu itself will perform the same whether it's on an older motherboard with an updated bios or an x570 board, just won't have those extras.

      • Considering a 5900x now that I know the 5000 series is supported.
On the bios updates it states Ryzen 9 5900X (Vermeer) (3.7GHz,105W,L3:64M,12C). Does this mean the 5900x wouldn't run at full speed?

Maybe a 5900x is pushing the old motherboard a bit too far…

        • It will run at full speed (3.7GHz is the full speed) but mostly there's no point. It's simply more cores at a similar speed, unless you have a specific use in mind for more cores it's not going to improve anything.

If it's a machine used for gaming (and isn't GPU limited) you might be better off getting a 5800X3D instead. That will see some benefit thanks to the massive L3 cache.

          • @freefall101: Awesome, cheers! I work in content creation, Unity / Unreal Engine, Photoshop, Substance Painter, Zbrush, Maya/Blender etc so might stretch a little for the 5900x if it's going to work ok with my motherboard.

            • +1

@Jebus: One other thing you get with the 5900X over the 5800X is double the cache - 64M in 5900X vs 32M in 5800X. So for many workloads it will be better even if not using more than 8 cores / 16 threads.

Of course if you know for sure your workloads needs loads of cache but not loads of cores, then a 5800X3D might make sense (e.g. it beats the 5900X in those scenarios).

Back on what jasswolf said about pci-e 4.0 - true your motherboard doesn't support pci-e 4.0, so you won't get improved nvme I/O (the main difference), but it won't be a downgrade from what you've got in any way.

    • All I can say is don't get a Gigabyte B550 Aorus Pro - mine has had endless issues.

I hear the Asus B550-F is good.

      • +1

Same with the B550 Gigabyte Aorus Pro.
Sent it back for warranty with 5600X both from shopping express.

      • I have the B550 Aorus Pro (with 5900X) for nearly 2 years and its been fine except for the USB dropout which was fixed over a year ago.

    • +2

In theory it would run on your current board too… (With bios updates)

    • +2

Update your bios to latest and drop this chip in. It'll be a huge performance uplift for very little spend and effort!

  • +3

Good price. Before buying, make sure Amazon AU warranty applies to this product. Amazon US via AU price is $400.
    https://amzn.asia/d/1xV7Irr

    • +5

      Valid point.

But I've had one CPU fail on me in nearly 30 years. Of all the things I'm willing to risk on overseas warranty, CPU is one of them.

    • Pearl clutching over warranty for CPUs is overblown. I bought a dead 3700X off Gumtree recently, RMAed it with AMD, sent it to Singapore and got a new one (and an extra wraith prism) back in a couple of weeks. I've been building systems for over a decade and it was the first dead CPU I'd ever come across.

      • Did they ask for invoice or proof of purchase?

        • They did, I told them I didn't have one, they said cool send it to this address and we'll sort it out.

            • +7

@bboarder: What an offensive accusation. I didn't fake a receipt, I told them I didn't have one. They accepted that since the 3700X was less than 3 years old when I did the RMA, it must still be covered by their warranty. Pull your head out of your arse.

              • -3

@xyron: Sorry, but from your posts it sounds like you knowingly bought the dead cpu with the intention to RMA. That seems unethical to me.

                • -1

@bboarder: How is that unethical? If AMD denied my RMA request, I'd have just thrown the chip in the bin. If they received the chip and thought there was some other basis to deny my warranty claim, that'd be that. Thankfully we're anonymous on this forum because accusing me of fraud is a very serious allegation.

                  • @xyron: You implied that you were the owner of the card which i assume is against the warranty. Geez mate calm down I haven't called the cops I made an off hand remark on ozbargain 😂

                    • +2

@bboarder: Why should warranty not be valid if you aren't the first owner?

That's just what some scummy manufacturers do

                • @bboarder: What are you on about it's not his fault the original owner didn't realise they could get it replaced

            • +4

              @bboarder: Is it?

They had a faulty CPU and AMD was willing to replace it without proof of purchase. Who happened to be holding the CPU at the time it was sent to AMD is irrelevant.

  • its not 377 aud delivered ?

    • Yeaha it's like $420 LOL

      • and the first link he provided is a third party seller…

      • +1

Yeah coming up as $424 for me. Cheaper from Amazon AU for $397.

    • +1

Not sure what y'all are on about. The link provided shows it's sold by AMD official store. Sold by Amazon, shipped by Amazon.

      Total USD price $256.47.
Using Google currency conversion that is $376.55 AUD.

      • You need to proceed to checkout, that price is before tax.

$25 USD gets added on when you try to checkout.

        Total before GST: USD 255.54
Estimated GST to be collected: USD 25.55

        Order total: USD 281.09

        • Ahhh damnit…my bad, that sucks lol, thanks for heads up

          • +3

@WallybR: May as well get it unpublished. Other deal via AU is cheaper.

            • @Techie4066: Agreed, I had a look earlier but couldn't see an option.

  • +1

This is not a good deal when you get warranty properly fulfilled for return if you buy via the Amazon US shopfront on the AU site: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/722149

Unless you have access to specific promos, cashbacks, or discounts/gift cards, you're paying more for nothing.

  • +2

5700x is a better deal from amazon.au and is available again at $369 and with curve optimiser, ppt, and pbo boost will perform like a 5800x. Next day delivery.

    https://ibb.co/2vzccnr (cpuz quick test)

    • -1

and when ocing the 5800x it will perform even better still? 5800x is defo worth even more so looking at that terrible SC score you posted.

      • +1

Your right what a terrible score, 3 points off a 5950x. I did that test with over 300 processes running, 100 chrome tabs open, it performs on par witha 5900x. I have mine running at 4.8GHz. You forget to realise is that the 5800x is a 105w chip, whereas the 5700x is a 65w chip so heat is the already a big factor with the 5800x. (They are known to run hot. I have mine running at 4.7ghz all core at 65.0c on a $50 air cooler. The 5700x is basically a power limited 5800x but of course you know better.

        https://valid.x86.fr/bench/1 (5900x, 5950x scored 647)

Here you go, I just did a clean boot with cpu z. 660 SC 6775 MC.

        https://ibb.co/vXzytfd

        • Why 5900HX single core is much lower at 596 ?

        • Pov: Your cpu is faster than a stock 5950x!!!!
Not sure why someone wouldnt spend the <$30 more for a superior product

          My 5600x btw - https://ibb.co/DMdY5Zn

          Edit-
          Also applying your methodology
          https://valid.x86.fr/bench/12
My 5600x is also faster than a 5800x. Lmao

          • @abjsdhasehasee: @Not sure why someone wouldnt spend the <$30 more for a superior product

Hmm let's think about it. Australian stock, Australian warranty, next day delivery. Or wait 4 weeks for a cpu in which you have issues will need to wait another 4 weeks to send back and another 4 weeks tor receive another.

You do realise 6700 is a bigger number than the 4700 that you just posted.

            Also applying your methodology
            https://valid.x86.fr/bench/12
My 5600x is also faster than a 5800x. Lmao

            • @Austrian Oak: Did you reply to my comment with your toes?

No way, are you telling me that your 5700x with 4 more threads than my 5600x… has a faster multicore???? thats crazy.

Also good one on reading that stock 5600x as my scores for some reason? 6770 vs 5320 multicore
Back on topic about single core tho, 660 vs 680. Ouch

              • @abjsdhasehasee: Mate i'm just quoting your link, you linked to that MC result implying your cpu was faster, not me.

                • @Austrian Oak: You say this

                  ""https://valid.x86.fr/bench/1 (5900x, 5950x scored 647)""

You then go ahead and post your 5700x score implying your cpu is faster than a 5950x despite the fact that they are literally stock benchmarks. (((Im just quoting your link, you linked to that SC result implying your cpu was faster, not me)

I reuse this thought process and say that according to you my 5600x is faster than a 5800x as a 5800x scored sub 5k while i scored 5.3+

Also no need to seethe that you bought a higher tier cpu and its still slower in SC.

          • @abjsdhasehasee: teach me master, my 5600x is not that fast (SC: 626 / MC: 4775), have you overclocked it ?
what are settings should I use ?

Its cheaper on australian amazon no?

  • Cheaper deal here, has been on ozb since wednesday last week: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/722149

  • I see this is currently 299 on Amazon.. https://www.amazon.com.au/AMD-Ryzen-7-5800X/dp/B0815XFSGK#

  • That's possibly a scam seller.

Brand New shop, no feedback and only 2 products. Wouldn't trust that
