  • This is a rlycheap deal

  • Have one and happy

    • How practical is it to use in terms of being a “three in one"? Tempted but never really used a bag like this before.

  • Thanks, OP. Bought one and a pair of cooling scarfs. I am well prepared for Summer!

  • Looks like an awesome bag. I bought it based on this review https://youtu.be/nnCxiK_LDgw

Lol! That guy rates Kathmandu quality up with Patagonia & North Face! He obviously doesn't use Krapmandu gear!!

(Found stitching & materials of other Krapmandu gear fail in use. Not fun when travelling a long way away from home or their store to return it to. As happened to me with pack on 3 month Europe trip, & on multi-day hike @3000m in Japan Alps. Spoilt my adventures. Kathmandu response - "just bring it back to store for exchange" - over a month later!)

But handy vid to view the bag.

      • Still using mine from 2010. Its a backpack that I use for work taking everything from laptops, tablets, food and baby stuff. Other than being a tiny bit smelly when it gets rained on, it’s still holding up.

Guess YMMV depending on what you buy and how good the QC is on that line.

        • Definitely a QC problem @ Kathmandu.
I just don't buy from Kathmandu if I need to rely on it on my travels. The savings cost me too much!

Occasionally use a 45L Kathmandu pack (also from 2010). It has lasted well for a heavily discounted item. Last used on holiday 6mth ago. But not as well designed & comfortable as my dearer Lowe Alpine pack.

Love some of their stuff. (A favourite light travel item is their treated microfiber face washers. Small, light, fast drying - and good enough to dry off after shower, or wipe the sweat off in the tropics.)

Even better value - when bought with the regular $20 member's vouchers. Have 2 to use this week. So looking for something to buy!

  • "Want a carry-on you can also check-in and use as a daypack?"

Downside of multipurpose packs is weight.
    Weight 2150g
That uses up a fair bit of carry on allowance.

And the harness is usually not as good or comfortable as a dedicated pack.
Borrowed one (not this one) for trip to UK - not for me. In many years of overseas travel, (except that time) using similar sized packs - all weighed no more than around 1kg.

Mainly travel light now (carry on only) with 450g daypack with padded laptop compartment, plus clip on drysack. Has served me well for many trips of over 1 month each.
    Each to their own…

    • Good news: this product is on clearance, so no one on OzB will offend you by posting a deal on this product again

      • +1

Who's offended? As I said Each to their own…

Have learnt from buying & using hiking gear for decades. Travelling lighter has many benefits. And that weight saving & comfort starts with the choice of pack!

Hung out with some of the designers & people who set up outdoor businesses here. Still have the odd prototype product. And shopped at Kathmandu Clearance Sales since around 2009.

There are far better products - but rarely as cheap. But it's just "fashion" for the outdoors & travel, rather than good design.

When I pop in to use the frequent member's $20 vouchers - I joke with Kathmandu managers about these issues. Hard for them not to agree.

        Don't worry…
If you don't already know, Kathmandu Clearance products often are still available years later - just with a minor change of colour or features!
Like the regular Deals for their packing cells - on Clearance each year because it's not this year's colour.

Expect this Deal will return - it's the Kathmandu sales strategy!

Bought $130 (Kathmandu's notoriously inflated RRP) Merino tops for $15 last year on Clearance. The only reason it was on Clearance - colour had changed since previous year. Now the replacement colour have been on clearance for $50 - because there's a new colour for this year.

That's what they mean by Clearance at Kathmandu! Any reason for a sale, at prices reduced to a reasonable level from their inflated RRP!

    • Clip on drysack is a good idea. What daypack do you use? Do you ever 'fit in extra stuff' by wearing a large jacket with pockets while doing carry on only? Keen to learn some one bag secrets haha.

      • +1

        Are, you know the tricks😉
Have posted about light travel here a few times. You will quickly learn what works for you.
        Certainly not suitable for everyone!

Rarely carry such a jacket. My travel pants have many large, deep pockets (for phone, powerbank, chargers or anything smaller & heavy). Wear a few layers of clothes onto plane, removing layers onboard - back into pack. Keeps carry-on weight down.

Have a few daypacks, so use whichever is suitable. Used to have ones packed ready to grab for next journey, depending on needs of season. Easier for warm climates than cold. (For cold weather - thermals are small, light, & warm. Bought from Kathmandu on Clearance last year for $2.25ea!)

Daypack doesn't have to be anything special or expensive (some were free). Just comfortable, durable & light. Not going to be carrying much weight.
Drysack clips on to bottom of pack or carried separately. Easy to store detached as carry-on. Never had an issue.

Used to travel light 9mth a year overseas for years. Rarely stopping for more than a week (never work while travelling), so pack was often in use.
Really enjoy not having to wait for baggage on arrival, & not having to look after larger bag. Gives a greater flexibility that suits me.

Travelling light is great if you are more interested in an adventure than living the high life with everything with you.

I buy some things on arrival in a country, including toothpaste etc & sometimes local clothes. (In Myanmar, unexpectedly attended a conference hosted by Aung Sun Suu Kyi, so bought a formal lungi - a sarong.) Often give away older clothes before departure - lightens the pack.

    • Holy… 2kg + for a backpack is killer. I've been trying to find a good 30L that is <= 1kg

      • Yes - people will really feel that extra weight on long travels! A comfortable pack around 1kg makes travel more of a pleasure.

  • so this works as carry on luggage? i am in need of one for a trip soon. it is a shame it weighs a bit over 2kg, only 8kg left.
i'll need to weight my stuff for a 7 day trip.
